The Last Letter is a haunting, heartbreaking and ultimately inspirational love story.“―InTouch Weekly

Beckett,

If you’re reading this, well, you know the last-letter drill. You made it. I didn’t. Get off the guilt train, because I know if there was any chance you could have saved me, you would have.

I need one thing from you: get out of the army and get to Telluride.

My little sister Ella’s raising the twins alone. She’s too independent and won’t accept help easily, but she has lost our grandmother, our parents, and now me. It’s too much for anyone to endure. It’s not fair.

And here’s the kicker: there’s something else you don’t know that’s tearing her family apart. She’s going to need help.

So if I’m gone, that means I can’t be there for Ella. I can’t help them through this. But you can. So I’m begging you, as my best friend, go take care of my sister, my family.

Please don’t make her go through it alone.

Ryan

This book wrecked me
I really did this to myself. I set out looking for a book that would make me feel everything—that would wreck me emotionally, maybe even make me cry. And wow… I got so much more than I bargained for. This book didn’t just make me cry—it shattered me. I was full-on sobbing while cooking dinner, listening to the audiobook, clutching a spatula like it could save me from the heartbreak. And yet… it’s hands-down my favorite read of the year so far. At its heart, this is a pen-pal romance—but with a twist. Ella writes letters to “Chaos,” a soldier deployed overseas. Chaos is Beckett—her late brother Ryan’s best friend. After Ryan’s passing, Beckett shows up to support Ella and her twins, all while keeping his identity as Chaos a secret. She falls for the man behind the letters...and she falls for Beckett too—without realizing they’re the same person. (Yes, it’s as gut-wrenching as it sounds.) Beckett is everything. Gentle, steady, selfless. A true hero in every sense. The way he shows up for Ella—physically, emotionally, in the most vulnerable and painful moments—is just beautiful. He’s the kind of fictional man who ruins you for all others. This book took turns I never saw coming. It hit me with emotion after emotion, and the ending? Absolutely wrecked me. I cried like a baby, and I didn’t even care. I already knew Rebecca Yarros could write amazing romantasy, but after this? It’s clear her superpower is crafting love stories that break you and piece you back together again. I’m officially working my way through her entire backlist, and I cannot wait to dive into more.

I have become such an admirer and follower of Author Rebecca Yanos that I started reading her other books. And while this doesn’t contain any fantasy, other than the incredibly sexy form of a man in Choas, her descriptively written, emotional way with words is utterly beautiful! Ella is a single mom with a warrior’s spirit starts writing to her brother’s best friend while they are both serving in the military. Through their letters, Choas simply falls in love with her; his hard exterior and boarded up heart lets her in, and she’s fallen too! Tragedy strikes and months to years follow with Ella fighting for her daughter who is ill, protecting her son, and dealing with incredible loss. I found myself literally begging for these two people to see past each others’ faults and forgive, but relationships are never that easy. Then the worst happens. I can tell you that I literally sobbed reading this book, tears streaming down my face and I tried desperately to wipe them away so I could see to read. The way Rebecca Yarros writes just cuts deep ti the soul and the words she uses I can only imagine as coming from someone who has experienced real true overwhelming pain. I’ve felt this pain in my own life and didn’t know there were words that could express what I was feeling, but she does it! I would definitely keep this book and reread it many times! I loved it!!! 🥰
    - [ ] A Family Recipe
This was a good story. In order to get an inheritance four daughters must uproot their lives, go in different directions to different states to save a chain in the family business and the son has to get married. Each family member faces their own challenges, sometimes hilarious and sometimes sad, in an attempt not just to gain an inheritance but ultimately the father’s approval. Along the way, they must decide whether it’s worth it or if they should just throw in the towel. As they work against each other, and with each other, they grow as adults, good human beings, and a better understanding of what living and loving truly means. I liked it!

Wow, so many emotions tied with this read.. Ella appeared to be a very nice caring person that always seemed to get the short end of the stick.. she felt so alone, as her parents had passed and her brother Ryan was away in the military.. she married and soon as she got pregnant with twins, Colt & Maisie, her now ex Jeff walked out of her life and never looked back.. taking on motherhood of 2 at such a young age, as well as running a business left behind from her grandmother, she was juggling a lot.. during Ryan’s time in the military he became really close with some of his co-workers and especially his buddy Beckett aka Chaos felt like a brother.. however Chaos grew up in foster care and never really had family support, so Ryan extended his sisters kindness and asked her to be pen pals with his best bud.. during this back and forth penship between Chaos and Ella, they developed a liking and bond towards one another.. when Ryan dies from a mission gone wrong, Beckett carries the burden and honors his friends request to look after his sister and niece and nephew.. when he first arrives he doesn’t make his alias Chaos known.. but falls deeply for Emma and she falls for him.. he helps her deal with the rigorous cancer treatments for Maisie and he now feels part of a real family.. he asks Ella to marry him so the kids could be covered under his insurance plan, however Emma declines, but she does allow him to formally adopt them.. later on Emma ends up finding out that Beckett is Chaos and felt that she had been lied to.. even though it was just omission on Becketts part.. an incident at school brings them back together and they proceed forward, however tragedy strikes and they will need each other the most during this horrific time.. death strikes again and it’s not easy, but they lean on each other.. also end up having an additional 2 kids.. this read had me balling crying, but it was good

If you are familiar with military service you know all about the 'The Last Letter'. A letter and a promise to his best friend leads an Army serviceman, Beckett, to a family and a chance at a love that he never thought he deserved.

Beckett Gentry is stunned when his Army buddy Ryan MacKenzie hands him a letter from Ryan’s sister, Ella. Having grown up in foster homes after being abandoned by his mother, Beckett is wary of attachments—until he reads Ella’s letter. Ella, a single mother, lives with her twins, Maisie and Colt, at Solitude, the resort she runs in Telluride, Colorado. Their correspondence begins, though Beckett can only identify himself by his call sign, Chaos.

After Ryan’s death during a mission, Beckett travels to Telluride at his friend's request, in his last letter. He bonds with the twins and falls deeply in love with Ella. Reluctant to reveal details of Ryan’s death and risk causing her pain, Beckett chooses not to disclose that he is Chaos. When Maisie needs treatment for neuroblastoma, Beckett formally adopts the twins to support Ella and her children. As Beckett and Ella’s romance blossoms, questions are raised about the adoption, forcing Beckett to confront the truth about the letters from Chaos (AKA himself) and Ryan’s death, risking the loss of the family he loves.

Beckett and Ella are sympathetic protagonists whose past experiences make them cautious about love. Beckett never knew the security of a stable home life, while Ella’s impulsive marriage to her high school boyfriend ended when he discovered she was pregnant. Their romance unfolds slowly with the letters they exchanged playing a pivotal role in their connection.

Rebecca’s writing is crisp and sharp, with poetic passages that avoid being extravagant. While the love story is the book’s focus, the subplot involving Maisie’s illness is equally well-developed, and the bond between Beckett and the twins is heartfelt and sincere. His relationship with Colt already had me from the beginning and I was not prepared to have my heart ripped from my chest with that storyline. I still can't think about it with crying.

I hope all the talk of tears and sadness doesn’t deter anyone from reading this story. There's an abundance of hope and laughter in The Last Letter, and while the sad parts are impactful and harsh, so is the happiness. I love that, no matter what challenges they face, neither Beckett nor Ella ever give up. Their shared experience of loss makes their determination even more heartening and reassuring.

I can believe why this book made such an impactful mark and it will forever hold a very special place in my heart. It's an absolutely fantastic read—a heartbreaking yet realistic portrayal of romance, military life, and the unexpected trials life throws at you. I can't imagine a world without this story. I loved every minute of it and I am off to as many of them as I can from Rebecca because apparently, I never learn.

Stunningly written, devastatingly beautiful and an absolutely heartbreaking story that had me sobbing and feeling like a book hasn’t in a long time.

I was so invested, in the characters and their growth individually and in their relationships, the family dynamics as they developed.

Without adding spoilers, there is loss and tragedy, it’s a hard read; but wow the lessons in how to love, forgive, trust and heal are overwhelming and the ultimate take away from this book.

    5/5 starts! Amazing
