From the bestselling creators of Dragons Love Tacos comes the story of what happens when a grumpy old man and some mischievous squirrels match wits—with hilarious results. Little ones and grown-ups will giggle through multiple reads of Those Darn Squirrels!

Old Man Fookwire is a grump. The only thing he likes to do is paint pictures of the birds that visit his backyard. The problem is, they fly south every winter, leaving him sad and lonely.

So he decides to get them to stay by putting up beautiful bird feeders filled with seeds and berries. Unfortunately, the squirrels like the treats, too, and make a daring raid on the feeders. The conflict escalates—until the birds depart (as usual), and the squirrels come up with a plan that completely charms the old grump.

My entire classroom of 20 5yr old kids laughed so hard and ask for this book again and again
Children laughed and laughed at how the old man expressed himself. Good for talking about how we feel and express ourselves, how to be helpful and kind. Intro book before painting at an easel or how to perform steps in STEAM projects such as the squirrels planning, designing, building, & implementing a device to get to the bird seed. This book can be used in so many ways and it is so funny!!! Recommend for preschool or elementary classroom!

"Those Darn Squirrels!" has become the unofficial bedtime anthem in our household, and I've got to say, it's like a literary espresso shot for my 4-year-old's imagination. Forget about teddy bears; now my kid insists on tucking in a plush squirrel named Sir Nutty every night. I've never seen someone so enthusiastic about squirrels unless there's a secret society of preschoolers planning a rodent takeover.

The book's ability to turn grumpy Old Man Fookwire into a neighborhood hero in the eyes of my little one is nothing short of magical. Now, every time we pass a tree, my kid points and declares, 'Watch out for those sneaky acorn ninjas, Dad!' It's like having a miniature stand-up comedian narrate our walks. Who knew that a story about squirrels and an old man could be the hottest comedy ticket in toddler town?

Bought this book for my niece aged 6. Anyone who has squirrel issues in their vegetable garden will sympathize with the main character. However, in the end the old man and the squirrels develop a friendship, a lovely ending. My niece loves this book!

I think I remember why I bought "Those Darn Squirrels" yesterday. I'm looking for a book to read to my son's class, and am skipping through reviews on kids' books on Amazon, and came across this book. We have some bird feeders up and love squirrels and grumpy grandpa types :), the title was funny, the reviews were good, the summary seemed like it would be up our alley and the graphics looked very humorous and appealing. Tonight I read the book to dear son on kindle at bedtime, and we LOVED this book. GREAT illustrations, written REALLY WELL, funny, and sweet... After dear son went to sleep I handed it to dear husband and asked him to read it... he was reading it out loud to me and laughing, and told me to come write a review... while I'm here, I'm getting the 2 sequels for kindle, and I can see that we'll be reading those two sequels together laughing! Gosh, I really hope his class hasn't read this book yet, because I'd *love* to bring this in for 'guest reader day'!
p.s. We also think "Click. Clack. Moo." is really funny in our sense of humor, but this has even more going on in the story and in the pictures. We'll be reaching to this for gifts! Don't even hesitate to buy this book! Oh, and it's formatted really beautifully for kindle - easy to read the text, easy to see the illustrations...

There are three of these books, and I love each and every one of them. We put off purchasing copies because the local library has them, but I figured when my kids (aged 4 and 6) shouted "THE LIBRARY IS OPEN WE NEED THOSE DARN SQUIRRELS" each time we drove past our town library (which is often!), that I should just man up and buy them. It's a hilarious book about a grouchy old man who hates everything except the birds in his yard, and what starts out as a comical story quickly ends as a poignant tale of friendship when the lonely old man is befriended by the very thing he hates most: those darn squirrels. We read this constantly at my house, and it never gets old for my husband and I, which is good because some children's books become mundane after the second or third read. The pictures are hilarious as well, and there are small nuances on each page that only make them funnier. I think that to enjoy these books you'll need a quirky sense of humor, though, so if you don't think funny old men in silly pants and sarcastic squirrels are funny, then it may not be for you. As for me, I'm buying the next two in the series! (I also read these books to my 6th grade classes, and they found them just as hilarious as I did.)

A coworker of mine recommended this book when I mentioned we had a squirrel friend stealing from our bird feeder! The story was unique, interesting and so very touching! This is a fantastic kids author!!!

"Those Darn Squirrels!" by Adam Rubin, and illustrated by Daniel Salmieri, is a story about a grumpy old man who loved to feed the birds, and watch them from inside his house. He was so grumpy he even hated puppies! He was so old, they say that when he sneezed, dust came out.

Every year his birds flew south for the winter, leaving his bird feeders looking lonely and forlorn... and fair game for the squirrels! Now Old Man Fookwire, for that was his name, hated seeing the squirrels steal his bird food. He attempted many tricks to keep the squirrels away from his bird feeders, but nothing worked.

One day the squirrels noticed that Old Man Fookwire looked sad. When he saw the squirrels looking through his kitchen window, he shouted "Go away! I don't like you squirrels!" So the squirrels had a big meeting, and decided to do something nice for Old Man Fookwire.

The story continues until the squirrels were finally able to make the grumpy old man happy... sort of. His final words were, "Those darn squirrels!" as he shook his fist at them and smiled.

This is a cute story, with an unusual storyline and clever illustrations. It subliminally teaches children that "random acts of kindness" won't go unnoticed. There are several books in the "Those Darn Squirrels" line. Although I've read only this one, I wouldn't hesitate to suggest any of them would be worth recommending.

I believe the appropriate age range is from perhaps 1 year to third or fourth grade. The vocabulary in this book is rather a large one, which will really be a help to the older kids in this age range, as they learn to expand their personal vocabularies. I confidently recommend "Those Darn Squirrels" as a good book to start out reading to your infant, continuing in that vein until they are able to read it themselves.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hilarious and great for 3 to 5 year olds!
Reviewed in Canada on November 30, 2014
I bought this book for my 3-year old and 6-year old nieces and they adore it, especially the 3-year old. I'd say that 3 to 5 years is probably the sweet spot for an age recommendation. The illustrations are hilarious and they find Mr. Fookwire's name to be a great source of amusement. The story is about Mr. Fookwire's attempts to get the squirrels in his yard to stop eating from his bird feeders. See, Mr. Fookwire loves his birds and the squirrels are a real menace. The squirrels turn out to be pretty creative, and they eventually find a way to make peace with the lonely old man. A great choice for girls or boys, and for anyone who likes funny children's books. Recommended!
