Amazon.com Review

Stop everything! If at least one copy of each of these classics is not in a prominent place on your bookshelf, your home and your progeny's childhood is incomplete. Winnie-the-Pooh and his friends--blustery old Owl, bouncy Tigger, clever Christopher Robin, glum Eeyore, and the rest--have been a staple of children's literature for over 70 years in A.A. Milne's Winnie-the-Pooh and The House at Pooh Corner. And Milne's immortal collections of children's verse, When We Were Very Young and Now We Are Six, have soothed many a savage beast at bedtime with such incomparable delights as "If I Were King" and "Us Two." All four of these classics, complete with Ernest H. Shepard's original illustrations, are gathered here in a handsome boxed set. These hardcover editions will most certainly be a cherished legacy to be handed down for generations to come. After all, as Rabbit says solemnly one day, "Without Pooh, the adventure would be impossible." (Ages 3 to 103) --Emilie Coulter

Such Lovely Books!

Such Lovely Books!
I wish I’d taken a picture of the books in their box but I was using them for decorations for my daughter’s Winnie the Pooh baby shower. These are hardcover books. Every single one is in mint condition, as is the box that holds them. The pages are made of good quality material. I’d hoped there would be colorful drawings in them but the sketches are beautiful as they are. They made great decorations and now my daughter will be able to use them in her nursery! A beautiful set of books.

For many years I have meant to read the works of A. A. Milne concerning Winnie The Pooh and friends. Finally and happily I have done so...and then some. Included with the Pooh books are two collections of poetry. There are two main points I can make about Pooh's Library. The stories about Pooh, Piglet, Rabbit, Owl, Eeyore, Kanga, Roo, Tigger and, most importantly, Christopher Robin are sweet, wistful, endearing, joyful, loving and easy to read. They are appropriate for all members of the family, young and old and universal in appeal. Mr. Milne did his son the greatest honor by making him the hero, the foundation of these friends of the forest and the Hundred-Acre Wood, who come to him whenever there is a problem or a question of how to handle a situation. Each character is different and leaves a distinctive impression of personality and skills. Pooh, Christopher's best friend, is the dreamer who creates poems and songs sprinkled through the stories. Piglet can be a little nervous. Rabbit and Owl can read and write...to a point. Eeyore is an unmistakable pessimist. Kanga, the mother, is matter-of-fact and Roo, her son, is playful and reckless. Tigger likes to bounce and probably will forever. The element of the stories which stands most fast in my memory is the love between Christopher and Pooh. It is timeless, unforgettable and everlasting, untouched by the change indicated by Mr. Milne.
My second point concerns the two books of poetry - When We Were Very Young, and Now We Are Six. The poems in them are more structured than Pooh's and involve Pooh's world only minimally. Also, while the two books of stories seem more universal to me, the poetry books have a decided English influence to them. This should not shock those who realize Mr. Milne was English. There are poems about many things a child experiences, dreams about, wonders about, however Mr. Milne includes many references to a British childhood from the twentieth Century and many years previously, which may be unfamiliar to an American child. I am not saying this is bad but it is not quite as universally appealing as the adventures of Christopher Robin, Pooh and friends.
I highly recommend Winnie the Pooh and The House at Pooh Corner without reservation. I learned that not everyone lives and not everything occurs in the Hundred-Acre Wood. The books of poetry may not appeal to every child. I am quite an Anglophile in books and movies; not every child will be. It this is irrelevant to you and your child, then disregard. Enjoy what you like or are willing to try.

If you've never read this collection. Read it. The writing is perfect: humorous, soft and perfectly captures that window of early childhood thinking. I suspect even adults without kids would like it, but as the mom of four little kids these are very popular bedtime stories in our household.
The copies themselves are prettily made, have a smooth feel, thick paper, with the occasional ink sketch illustration. Smaller books overall, but fit nicely for reading with one or two kids.
