This is a confusing product. When I ordered it, I thought it would be similar to other smart swiches I own. I have a variety of Wemo and Lutron switches in my home, and I figured this would be a variation on that theme. And in a sense, it is. But it's a confusing variation. Why? Well first, there's the verbal soup of brand names attached to the product: Pass & Seymour, Legrand, radiant, Netatmo. Wow. Even a non-capitalized name, "radiant" which says nothing about the product to me--and thus leaves you wondering if it's a name or an adjective describing the system. So when you look up "Pass & Seymour" to find other products in the system, you end up looking at all sorts of rather expensive electrical fixtures like self-testing GFCI outlets and $10 wall switch face plates. So then you look up "Legrand" and you get most of the stuff you found with "Pass & Seymour." And then you try "radiant" and you get heaters on Amazon. Then, if you try "Netatmo" you get weather stations. Finally, if you try "Legrand radiant Netatmo," your search turns up a set of smart electric components: dimmer switches, smart outlets, etc. So figuring out what's available to attach to the system is a trial. Then there's the starter kit.... Again, not very well explained and not at all self-evident in what you're getting. What you need to know about this kit is that the Legrard radiant system is like Hue, Sengeld and Lutron's in having a central hub with each attached device expanding the system by serving as a mesh repeater. That much I suspected. What I did not understand is that the Legrand system doesn't have its hub in a box attached to your router, it's a small Wi-Fi radio equipped unit that takes a spot in a ganged outlet box--or in a non-ganged box, a single box where the hub attaches to a double face plate next to a switch or outlet that it sisters onto for power. So you can attach it to any number of ganged boxes as an extension on the side without taking up any of the spots for switches or outlets. The hub can sit over drywall, attached to the outlet/switch in the box next to it with the double faceplate concealing the fact that it's not a two-gang box. Obviously, a lot of thought has been put into this system and in some ways it's really quite impressive in its adaptability. But no thought at all seems to have been put into explaining the system. The names, marketing materials, etc. are atrocious and unless Legrand vastly simplifies and rethinks its marketing, the system is only going to be installed by pros. Lutron has a similar system, and it's idiot-proof and bulletproof with excellent instruction that even the rankest amateur can follow. Not this system. Why go for this system rather than Lutron's Caseta system? Honestly, there's not a lot of reason to do so other than price. Now I'm not sure of the pricing of future attachments, and even the pricing of what is available on Amazon seems to vary all over the place, but it does appear that you can get a dimming smart switch from Legrand that attaches to this system for $37 (https://www.amazon.com/Legrand-Radiant-Wireless-Netatmo-WNRL63WH/dp/B09G75YB9T/) where Lutron charges $58 for a switch with the same abilities. So price might be one very good reason to go with Legrand, but the system is new enough that I'm not sure where it's pricing will end up. One deficit compared to Lutron is that the Legrand system requires a neutral (white) wire in the box to connect to whereas Lutron can work on a circuit lacking a neutral where you've just run line to a switch. Components of this kit include: 1) The powered hub that controls the entire system. It comes with a dual face plate and a smart receptacle in the face plate next to it, but you could buy a Legrand smart switch and replace the receptacle with a switch next to the hub and use the smart receptacle elsewhere. 2) A smart receptacle which, initially, is found next to the hub in the dual face plate. This receptacle has one switched outlet and one always-on outlet. The smart ability is only for one of the two outlets in the receptacle. 3) A battery-powered switch that allows three-way switching of a circuit without the normally required three-way wiring. This can be done when the switch (or outlet) you want to control remotely is a Legrand smart unit. For instance, you could install a Legrand smart switch on a hall light and put the battery-powered switch elsewhere to control the hall light throught the wired Legrand switch by programming it for that purpose in the Legrand app. This switch can be placed directly on a wall. It doesn't need to be placed in (over) a box. It comes with a face plate that makes it look like a normal switch.
