Decent Self-Emptying Vacuum, but Lacking Key Features and Smarts
4 out of 5 stars
Decent Self-Emptying Vacuum, but Lacking Key Features and Smarts
The iRobot Roomba i3+ EVO is a decent entry into the smart vacuum market, but it falls short in several key areas, making it hard to recommend unless it's on sale.Setup and UsabilityThe setup process was very simple, and the app is intuitive and user-friendly. However, I have not used the Alexa integration and would personally prefer it if the device didn't include Alexa compatibility at all. For me, it's an unnecessary feature that feels intrusive.Smart Mapping and NavigationThe smart mapping feature works most of the time, but it's far from perfect. It struggles to accurately map certain areas of my apartment, particularly around doors, doorposts, couches, and chairs. Although it’s easy to designate rooms, I’ve noticed the map sometimes "forgets" rooms and labels them as unidentified. I've stopped trying to update the map because it’s more trouble than it’s worth. Additionally, the Roomba has difficulty avoiding obstacles and seems to lack the intelligence of other models I’ve used. It constantly bumps into walls, eats cords, and gets stuck on furniture legs or loose items. It would be great if it could learn to avoid problem areas over time, but unfortunately, it doesn’t.Cleaning PerformanceThe vacuum does a decent job of picking up pet hair, which is my primary use case, but it requires daily operation to maintain cleanliness. It struggles with various surfaces and often gets caught on desk legs or loose objects. While it’s not the worst cleaner I’ve used, the lack of advanced obstacle detection is a real drawback.Self-Emptying and MaintenanceThe self-emptying feature is a standout highlight. It’s convenient and works well, though I wish the device would notify me when the bag is full. I highly recommend investing in reusable bags, as the disposable ones sold separately can become an unnecessary ongoing cost. One minor issue is that the bags can be tricky to load, but the snug fit ensures everything stays in place.Battery Life and DurabilityI live in a small apartment, and the battery is usually quite low by the time it finishes its daily cleaning routine. While this hasn’t caused any issues yet, I anticipate potential battery problems within a year or two. On the bright side, the vacuum reliably finds its base 99% of the time. A small quirk is that it doesn’t clean the area around its base, so placement is important.Noise and OperationThe Roomba is quite noisy during operation, which can be especially frustrating since it takes about an hour to clean my space. Over time, I’ve learned to tune out the noise, but it can still be disruptive during meetings or when watching something. The frequent bumping into objects adds to the noise and highlights its lack of refinement compared to other smart vacuums I’ve owned.Overall ValueI would only recommend this vacuum if it’s on sale—preferably during events like Black Friday or Cyber Monday—and only if the discount is significant. Even then, I think you can find better value with other brands, such as Eufy. The self-emptying feature is the main selling point, but the lack of features like remote control, spot cleaning, and advanced obstacle avoidance makes it hard to justify the price. While Alexa integration might appeal to some, I find it unnecessary and would prefer it not be included.Final ThoughtsOverall, the iRobot Roomba i3+ EVO has its merits, particularly in its self-emptying capability, but its flaws outweigh the benefits. It’s not a bad vacuum, but it’s far from the best. If you’re in the market for a smart vacuum, I’d suggest exploring alternatives that offer better value and more advanced features.

My third one al lwe’re broken or stopped working after a few uses. I really wanted one, but this company does not make a quality product. The first two I got at a store that would take them back the third one I bought on Amazon. With no ability to return after using it under 10 times over approximately 3 months. I called the iRobot company and they just kept sending me on a wild goose chase to get more and more and more receipts which I could not obtain anymore of. At the end of the day they just cut me off Amazon has nobody to get in touch with so there’s absolutely nothing I can do. I would warn anybody buying this item not to. It will break quickly and you will be stuck

This Roomba i3 worked well for a few weeks but now it's useless. It started out mapping all the rooms of my house and did everything it is supposed to do- went to individual rooms when directed, followed the perimeters, cleaned completely, emptied the bin, etc. One day I noticed that it wasn't going where it was supposed to and not really cleaning anywhere.

I've tried multiple reboots and even a factory reset, but it still just leaves the dock and seems to get stuck in one spot, even in the middle of a room with no obstacles, and spins around like it's lost. (See my video.)

I tried Roomba customer support and they said that since the reboots and factory reset didn't fix things, they would have to escalate it to a new support department. They requested all kinds of pictures, video, router and phone information, and other details which I immediately sent. It's been 5 days and I've sent two follow up emails asking about the status of my support ticket and have not received any response yet.

I'm super bummed because I was happy with this purchase, but now it seems like I'm stuck with a big expensive pile of plastic that doesn't work anymore. If I hear from Roomba support and they make this issue right through the warranty or whatever means allows me to use my Roomba again, I'll come back and update this review. Until that time, I strongly advise against ordering this product.

I have had my roomba for 6 months now and I love it. It mapped my house for a few hours when I first got it and I haven’t had to remap it since. I think the best way to make sure your roomba is running properly is to keep it clean. Changing the filters and parts, keeping the sensors clean, really made a difference. I was getting frustrated at it for not working but once I took care of it, it hasn’t had any issues since. It picks up everything on the floor without problems. I got this mainly for cat litter and I usually run it once a day for this purpose, it never leaves a spec behind.

I highly recommend investing in reusable bags, as the disposable ones sold separately can become an unnecessary ongoing cost. One minor issue is that the bags can be tricky to load, but the snug fit ensures everything stays in place.

    Battery Life and Durability
I live in a small apartment, and the battery is usually quite low by the time it finishes its daily cleaning routine. While this hasn’t caused any issues yet, I anticipate potential battery problems within a year or two. On the bright side, the vacuum reliably finds its base 99% of the time. A small quirk is that it doesn’t clean the area around its base, so placement is important.

    Noise and Operation
The Roomba is quite noisy during operation, which can be especially frustrating since it takes about an hour to clean my space. Over time, I’ve learned to tune out the noise, but it can still be disruptive during meetings or when watching something. The frequent bumping into objects adds to the noise and highlights its lack of refinement compared to other smart vacuums I’ve owned.

    Overall Value
I would only recommend this vacuum if it’s on sale—preferably during events like Black Friday or Cyber Monday—and only if the discount is significant. Even then, I think you can find better value with other brands, such as Eufy. The self-emptying feature is the main selling point, but the lack of features like remote control, spot cleaning, and advanced obstacle avoidance makes it hard to justify the price. While Alexa integration might appeal to some, I find it unnecessary and would prefer it not be included.

    Final Thoughts
Overall, the iRobot Roomba i3+ EVO has its merits, particularly in its self-emptying capability, but its flaws outweigh the benefits. It’s not a bad vacuum, but it’s far from the best. If you’re in the market for a smart vacuum, I’d suggest exploring alternatives that offer better value and more advanced features.

Decent Self-Emptying Vacuum, but Lacking Key Features and Smarts

Reviewed in the United States on January 16, 2025
The iRobot Roomba i3+ EVO is a decent entry into the smart vacuum market, but it falls short in several key areas, making it hard to recommend unless it's on sale.

    Setup and Usability
The setup process was very simple, and the app is intuitive and user-friendly. However, I have not used the Alexa integration and would personally prefer it if the device didn't include Alexa compatibility at all. For me, it's an unnecessary feature that feels intrusive.

    Smart Mapping and Navigation
The smart mapping feature works most of the time, but it's far from perfect. It would be great if it could learn to avoid problem areas over time, but unfortunately, it doesn’t.

    Cleaning Performance
The vacuum does a decent job of picking up pet hair, which is my primary use case, but it requires daily operation to maintain cleanliness. It struggles with various surfaces and often gets caught on desk legs or loose objects. While it’s not the worst cleaner I’ve used, the lack of advanced obstacle detection is a real drawback.

Love it great suction takes a few days to map your layout but it's fantastic.mOnem thing to be aware of and i personally don't care is it leaves black marks on the baseboard and doors from bumping into them.
The machine also gets very scratched up on it's body. My irobot stopped working properly, it was promptly replaced by irobot customer service.
