The Great Gatsby: The Original 1925 Edition (A F. Scott Fitzgerald Classic Novel) Paperback – April 27, 2021
Purchase options and add-ons
“So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.” ― F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby
Set on Long Island during the Roaring Twenties, The Great Gatsby is F. Scott Fitzgerald’s enduring exploration of wealth, desire, and the disillusionment of the American Dream. Narrated by Nick Carraway, the novel unveils the tragic pursuit of lost love by the mysterious millionaire Jay Gatsby, set against the backdrop of Jazz Age excess and East Coast elite society.
Recognized as a cornerstone of American literature and regional commentary, this classic novel captures the social divides, moral decay, and cultural shifts of post–World War I America. With its richly drawn characters and lyrical prose, The Great Gatsby remains a powerful critique of class, identity, and ambition in 1920s America — making it essential reading for fans of literary fiction, American classics, and modern literary criticism.

About the author

F. Scott Fitzgerald was born in 1896 in St Paul, Minnesota, and went to Princeton University which he left in 1917 to join the army. Fitzgerald was said to have epitomised the Jazz Age, an age inhabited by a generation he defined as 'grown up to find all Gods dead, all wars fought, all faiths in man shaken'.
In 1920 he married Zelda Sayre. Their destructive relationship and her subsequent mental breakdowns became a major influence on his writing. Among his publications were five novels, This Side of Paradise, The Great Gatsby, The Beautiful and Damned, Tender is the Night and The Love of the Last Tycoon (his last and unfinished work): six volumes of short stories and The Crack-Up, a selection of autobiographical pieces.
Fitzgerald died suddenly in 1940. After his death The New York Times said of him that 'He was better than he knew, for in fact and in the literary sense he invented a "generation" ... he might have interpreted them and even guided them, as in their middle years they saw a different and nobler freedom threatened with destruction.'

- Reviewed in the United States on September 22, 2024I am pleased to inform you that I have acquired this book and commenced reading it promptly upon my arrival home. I found it to be highly engaging and compelling, to the extent that I experienced difficulty in ceasing my reading. It is my intention to attend the Broadway musical adaptation of this literary work in two months, and I considered it prudent to familiarize myself with the source material beforehand.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 14, 2024Bought this in realtion to a school project the book came in perfect condition with no creasing or issues at all
- Reviewed in the United States on March 8, 2025Four stars as I feel this book is dated for a classic teaching book for my son's at school. There are others that teach this similar concept in a more renewed sense and time. Same with Catcher in the Rye, felt there was always going to be something more but the stories were ok, the lessons were solid. My son's enjoyed Huckleberry Fin and Of Mice and Men, but they said this and Catcher in the Rye were a bit dry. Good to read this for class in short bursts. Good quality paperback.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not a press house publication
I didn’t realize when I purchased it but this copy is an independent version, therefore, it’s the available public domain manuscript. The cover is printed from the original, and the quality is regular. If you’re interested in buying a copy from an editorial house, I wouldn’t recommend this one. If you’re just looking for a physical copy, then it’s okay.
My copy came with some damage, but since it’s a paperback with a very flimsy cover, it was sort of expected for the price point.
