Delicious and healthful recipes from the popular blog TheWholeSmiths.com–fully endorsed by Whole30

As fans of the Whole30 know, it can be challenging to figure out how to eat for the other 335 days of the year. Michelle Smith, creator of the blog The Whole Smiths, has the answers. This cookbook, the first ever fully endorsed and supported by Whole30, offers a collection of 150 recipes to keep Whole30 devotees going strong. Many recipes like Spaghetti Squash Chicken Alfredo are fully Whole30-compliant, and all are gluten-free, but you’ll also find recipes with a careful reintroduction of grains, like the tortillas in the Chile Enchilada Bake. Some recipes include beans and legumes, so there are plenty of vegetarian options. There are even desserts like Chocolate Chip and Sea Salt Cookies! Throughout the book, icons help readers identify which recipes fit their dietary constraints (and which are easily adaptable), but perhaps most important of all, the recipes are a delicious way to help anyone achieve a long-term approach to good health.

Instant Pot Asian Braised Short Ribs from The Whole Smiths Good Food Cookbook

Serves 4, Paleo, Whole30-Compliant if modified, Dairy-Free, Nut-Free

For the longest time, I was apprehensive about making short ribs. I always ordered them at restaurants but felt they weren’t something I would be able to easily cook at home. Until I discovered the Instant Pot.

I soon realized the magic of pressure cooking and decided it was time to try my hand at some short ribs. And they tasted just like the ones that I ordered at restaurants for so many years.

In this version, I add some Asian-inspired flavors to take things to the next level. If you can add ingredients to a pot and press a couple of buttons, you’re ensured a batch of short ribs that taste like they came from your favorite restaurant.

Directions

Season the short ribs with 2 teaspoons of the salt.

In a cast-iron skillet over medium-high heat, heat the olive oil. Place the short ribs in the skillet and sear each side for about 10 seconds. Transfer the short ribs to the Instant Pot. Add the onion, coconut aminos, sesame oil, vinegar, fish sauce, honey, garlic, and remaining 2 teaspoons salt. Select the 'Meat /Stew' setting on the Instant Pot and cook on high pressure for 1 hour. Let the pressure release naturally.

Use tongs to remove the ribs from the Instant Pot and transfer them to a serving platter. Select the 'Sauté' setting and reduce the cooking liquid for 10 minutes.

To serve, pour the reduced cooking liquid over the short ribs and garnish with the scallion and toasted sesame seeds.

Notes

To modify for Whole 30, omit the honey.

To toast sesame seeds, heat a small skillet over medium-low heat and spread the sesame seeds into an even layer in the pan. Cook, stirring the sesame seeds continuously, until they are slightly golden and toasted, 3 to 4 minutes. Transfer to a plate and let cool.

Ingredients

  • 2 pounds bone-in short ribs
  • 4 teaspoons salt
  • 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1 cup chopped sweet onion (about 1 medium)
  • 1 cup coconut aminos
  • 1 tablespoon toasted sesame oil
  • 1 tablespoon rice wine vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon fish sauce
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 scallion, thinly sliced, for garnish
  • 1 teaspoon sesame seeds, toasted (see Note below), for garnish

Editorial Reviews

Review

“… the recipes truly shine in inventive fare, like salmon with shredded squash and dill; dairy-free broccoli with chicken ranch potatoes; a recipe called Cloud Eggs Furikake, which features a baked egg yolk nested atop whipped egg whites. Each recipe is noted for its applicability for vegan, paleo, and Whole30 dieters, should they have questions. Throughout, Smith suggests flavorful recipes for such standbys as sweet potato hash, salmon-avocado salad, and barbecue chicken meatballs, all of which come together in minutes. Health-minded home cooks who aren’t adhering to a strict dietary regimen will find new dishes to incorporate into regular rotation." Publishers Weekly “Michelle’s food ticks all my boxes: healthy, realistic, delicious, and fun. There are lots of Whole30-compliant recipes, but plenty of variety for your food freedom. And it’s stuff I can actually pull off on a richly scheduled day; whole-food, nutritious meals that also taste fantastic.” —from the Foreword by Melissa Hartwig, Whole30 Headmistress   “I’m a longtime reader of The Whole Smiths and Michelle’s debut cookbook is everything I was hoping it would be: fun, fabulous, family-tested recipes that are perfect for everyone who loves good food!” —Michelle Tam, New York Times best-selling cookbook author and creator of Nom Nom Paleo   “This book is full of inspiration and wonderful recipes that solve the problem of what to make for dinner.” —Teri Turner, founder and creator of nocrumbsleft   “Michelle truly keeps it real in her new book—real food, and real talk!  I appreciate how approachable the recipes are, and love how I can find all the ingredients at my local grocery store! She focuses on an abundance of healthy and delicious meal ideas that are easy to prepare and will leave you and your family satisfied. This book is a perfect addition to any health-inspired cookbook collection!” —Kirsten Buck, Buck Naked Paleo   “The Whole Smiths Good Food Cookbook should be a staple in all homes that are wanting to clean up their diets and lifestyle. Each recipe is unique and creative yet approachable to all levels of home cooks. I know that busy families will love and live off this book, and I look forward to making many of these dishes.” —Alex Snodgrass, creator of The Defined Dish

She resides in the San Francisco Bay Area with her husband and two young daughters. When Michelle's children were born, she started paying close attention to the foods they were eating and quickly realized how much processed food had become "normal" food in so many households, hers included. After dabbling in the paleo diet she quickly saw improvement in her family's overall health and wellness and was hooked. Shortly thereafter, she decided to start a food blog called the Whole Smiths and share the recipes that she was creating for her family. Michelle is passionate about creating healthy dishes the entire family will enjoy and doesn’t feel that clean eating should feel pretentious, but accessible and fun for everybody. This cookbook will not only make Whole30s easier, but will encourage and EXCITE you to get in the kitchen regardless of your dietary preference! Michelle has seemlessly appealed to kids, grandparents, teenagers, and 20-something’s alike. The food is fun and easy to make and the labels on each page make it so simple to determine if it meets your dietary needs. If you haven’t bought this yet, what are you even doing?!

I am a new follower of the whole smiths, and I couldn't wait to get my hands on Michelle's first cookbook (and the first Whole30 endorsed cookbook)! I am also relatively new to Whole30 so I am always searching for compliant recipes. I love that Michelle's recipes are labeled gluten free, dairy free, Whole30, etc so that you know right away what will work for you. There are many recipes that are Whole30 compliant as written, but Michelle includes instructions to modify those that are not. There are also many categories of recipes (including mocktails!) so you can find something for any type of snack, side, meal, beverage, and even dessert!

I've already tried several of the recipes in this book, and I can honestly say I have not yet found one that I didn't like or wouldn't make again. The Easy Bake Egg Cups, Spicy Tuna Salad, and Strawberry Balsamic Salmon (to name a few) are easy and delicious! Today I am trying Banana Eggs for the first time. I know, they sound weird, but if you follow the whole smiths on IG, you know they are a thing. I am excited to try them today!

My last comment about this book- it is beautiful! The photographs are stunning, which is important since we tend to eat with our eyes first. The non-food photos are creative, simple, and elegant adding to the overall beauty of this book. If you love cookbooks like I do, the Good Food Cookbook will make a wonderful addition to your recipe library.

I first checked this cookbook out of the library because I already have so many cookbooks and don't need anything else cluttering up my shelves. However, I didnt want to return it because it had so many good recipes! So I knew I needed to order my own. Every recipe I've made from this book has turned out great, which is wonderful when you love to cook but have a large busy family of 7 with no time for failed dinner attempts. (I especially love her sheet pan hash browns and eggs!) Most of the recipes are quite simple yet good enough for company and perfect for weekday cooking. I also appreciate that, while all of these dishes can easily be considered healthy, the author is flexible as far as her own "rules." So you'll find recipes with cream but then alternative ideas if you cant do dairy. I appreciate this flexibility in an age when we all seem terrified to step outside the lines of some strict dietary format (keto, gluten free, etc). One of the best recipes I've taken from this book is her homemade mayo. Gone are the days when I'd spend 20 minutes drizzling oil over my blender. She does it in a jar with an immersion blender, and it's perfection! All in all, a nice practical book I'm glad to have and find myself turning to surprisingly often. *one note: one of her drink recipes (page 244; Salty Downward Dog) appears to have an inadvertent ingredient omission (ginger). I notified the author via her Facebook page but never received a reply. It's the only error I've found.

So I follow Michelle Smith on Instagram and have been a huge fan of her recipes for awhile. I knew I had to order this cookbook as soon as I knew it was coming out. I had high expectations but she exceeded them. There are several things that I always look for in a cookbook but most fall short. NOT this one. It has real recipes, using good clean food, most of which I actually have at my house, the descriptions and recipes are easy to follow, there are pictures of the final product on almost every single recipe, the condiment and sauce chapter is amazing and it lists which category each recipe falls into so I don’t have to figure it out. Aka Whole30, Vegan, Paleo etc. The only problem I’ve come across yet is which recipe to make first because each one looks insane. Michelle poured her heart and soul into this book and it shows. I can’t wait to try everything and gift this book to other food loving friends.

I borrowed this from the library and liked a few recipes so much I bought it.

It is not whole 30 compliant, but I’m a heathy eater not on a 30 day elimination diet. For each recipe she lists which of the diet programs it is complient to as well as modifications to fix it for some.

The recipes are relatively simple and easy to get ingredients and are a great addition for everyday healthy cooking. Everything that I’ve tried has been delicious and the instructions are good and easy to follow (except seriously, how do you serve 4 people with 3 beautiful grilled Romaine hearts?)

My metric for a cookbook is how many go-to recipes are in it that I’ve made more than once, put in dinner rotation, “pre-open” to a page, and how dirty the pages are . I only have a handful of books that have more of these items ticked and they include: Gourmet, Art of French Cooking, Betty Crocker, Chocolate bible, Toro Bravo, Flour Water Salt Yeast.

My biggest complaint is that for a healthy cookbook I want nutritional info included. At least all the macros.

I wish I could give more than five stars + Thank you Michelle! Your GOOD FOOD COOKBOOK is on my top favorite list right next to Whole30 Fast & Easy Cookbook by Melissa Hartwig.
One more note: I am a follower of the Whole30 community/program. Michele is one of my favorite bloggers among others. Learning to eat healthier was my goal and has made a huge change in my life. Thank you Whole30ers!

I have made quite a few dishes out of this cookbook and every single one has been amazing. Most of the ingredients are things you probably already have. They even make the food I don't care for (like cabbage) taste delicious. The little stories she tells at the beginning of each recipe are very well done and some are hilarious. There are great pictures of every single recipe. I highly recommend this book, especially if you are trying to eat clean or Whole 30.

They're a huge hit with our three kids and they're excitingly new and interesting - not just slightly modified versions of what's already out there. I can't wait to cook my way through this entire book. Thank you for creating such an amazing addition to our Cookbook Library Michelle!!
