Drake Hall (The Secrets of Ormdale) Paperback – February 2, 2024
Purchase options and add-ons
Edith’s ancient home is full of secrets…and dragons are the least of them.
As the new dragon keeper in the hidden valley of Ormdale, Edith expects her first dragon mating season to involve venomous bites and amorous wyverns.
She doesn’t expect to find herself growing closer to an inconveniently appealing suitor next door, or to stumble upon a dragon poacher lurking in the outbuildings, or to uncover a family scandal in the Abbey.
Fortunately, Edith has a mentor to help her sort things out, the spellbinding Helena Drake of Drake Hall. Or does Helena harbour secrets of her own?
For Edith, the dragons were always going to be the easy part.
DRAKE HALL, Book 2 of The Secrets of Ormdale, takes Edith deeper into the cosy gothic world of Yorkshire dragons and the mysterious families who guard them.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 14, 2024Christina Baehr's second installment in The Secrets of Ormdale Series is a delightful page-turner!
"Drake Hall" is fanciful and fascinating. Enchanting and engrossing. Charming and captivating. I could wax poetical with alliterations for days on end, so much have I enjoyed this story! My bookish heart is giddy to the point of GUSHING, dearies!
After reading several beautiful, but rather somber novels, this is just the sort of tale I needed to get lost in! Something imaginative! Something humorous!! Something fun!!! Have I used enough exclamation marks to suitably convey how FUN this story is yet!?!?!
Fans of Victorian history, fairy tales, and legends of yore will love exploring Baehr's whimsical world.
If you've ever wished there had been dragons frolicking about "The Secret Garden," you simply must pay a visit to "Drake Hall"!

📖 "Drake Hall" (Book 2)
- Reviewed in the United States on July 15, 2025I really like the characters and the depth the author gives to each one. It’s a fun story done well.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 7, 2024Edith Worms has settled in at Wormwood Abbey and has become a frequent visitor at Drake Hall while getting to know Helena Drake, Simon’s invalid mother. Edith finds out more about the dragons in the area, confronts a hired thief, and finds out about the oldest and largest dragon in the area. Then she receives an invitation to visit a mysterious place to meet the Red Dragon. Hoping to find out more about other Dragon Wardens, Edith makes plans to travel there, which will continue in the next story. I enjoyed this second book in the series, learning more about the history of the Worms and their dragon keeping, and watching Edith become more comfortable in her role there. I’m off to read about her adventure in Wales now.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 20, 2025After reading the first book in the series, I immediately bought the rest of it. I am so pleased with the sequel! (Though its pages are coming loose from the binding, which is sad.)
- Reviewed in the United States on December 12, 2024I found thus series this summer, and I really enjoyed them! So, I ordered the first two as Christmas gift for my sister-in-law. She also likes reading fantasy, and I think she'll love these! I would definitely recommend these to anyone who loves historical English genres and anyone who loves dragons.
They were delivered on time and are a very nice texture on the covers.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 24, 2025These books reads like a classic. This is book 2 of a series about protagonist Edith who recently learned that her english family are dragon keepers commissioned by Queen Elizabeth the 1st. This one gives the details of her learning more about her ancestral home and duties as a dragon keeper. It also does an excellent job at developing characters and relationships. I am enjoying the series and can’t wait to read on.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 11, 2024Book 2 has a purpose and it is one that young women should embrace. Make sure that your proposed boyfriend is a man who will choose you over his mother. And then never force him to make that choice if you can’t avoid it. A true man should have a secure woman who doesn’t play games. A good mother shouldn’t try to compete with the mother of her grandchildren. The best thing about this series is a strong, believable family at its core.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 19, 2024Very pleasant sequel to the family that discovers they are of an ancient line of dragon keepers. Fairly good balance between developing romance and the trials of managing dragons and a rural estate.

5.0 out of 5 stars The legend continues…
Just like the first book in this series, Drake Hall is an absolute delight! Edith is finding her footing as the effective mistress of the Abbey and really blossoming. More kinds of dragons are introduced in this instalment and more of the backstory is explained, plus a wider world of dragon keepers is alluded to, though we will have to wait for book 3 to learn more!
I love Christina Baehr’s writing and the voice she gives our heroine. This is a charming book about dragons, friendship, and hint of possible romance with the handsome VERY distant cousin next door.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another tale full of secrets and charm
Here we are treated to more fun and clever writing by Christina Baehr.
Characters are developed further, secrets and family history are revealed. Some new faces appear.
The book doesn't really finish with anything resolved, so you will have to immediately move on to book 3.
It has certainly captured my imagination.

5.0 out of 5 stars I loved Wormwood Abbey but Drake Hall might be even better!
I loved Wormwood Abbey, so was counting the days till the second instalment, Drake Hall, appeared in my Kindle Wow. It’s possibly even better than the first.
Simon’s mother: will she be a kindred spirit or an obstacle to Edith’s future in Ormdale?
An unexpected connection with an intriguing new character leads to more questions about Edith’s own past. …and will he be a rival for Simon?
I love that there are so many sympathetic male characters. Whether they are supportive, interesting or downright mysterious, all except one are men that I would love to know or have as a family member.
Disturbing disclosures in the Abbey itself.
I loved seeing Edith’s friendship with Simon maturing beyond its first impressions and her family return to Orndale. Greater development of the younger characters and - who would have thought, in cosy historic dragon fantasy? - wise relationship advice. I’ll never look at a certain kind of musical composition in the same way.
Edith’s influence in the Abbey leads to changes in several lives, not the least for Gwendolyn.
There is suspense and danger, though I was too absorbed in the story to think of them as such at the time!
Just the right amount of humour. I often laughed with and even at Edith, especially in relation to her secret identity. Such an endearing, relatable heroine.
Dragons: one we know and love, new dragons, historically accurate dragonlore...and hints at more dragons to be revealed?
What demographic is this book for? It contains droll literary references and easter eggs that might be missed by YA readers, so I’d be tempted to put it in the adult category for that reason alone, but my granddaughters age 9 and up have all read and loved the series. So far, I can heartily recommend The Secrets of Ormdale for everyone who enjoys the genre. Seeing the gorgeous cover art amongst other new releases says so much.
It was a gratifying read in every way. And the ending! Just when we sense Edith beginning to feel at home, a promise of adventure to come, and outside Yorkshire? Guess who has pre-ordered book 3, Castle of the Winds?
