Make Way for Ducklings 75th Anniversary Edition Hardcover – Picture Book, March 29, 2016
Purchase options and add-ons
“One of the merriest picture books ever.”—The New York Times
Mrs. Mallard was sure that the pond in the Boston Public Gardens would be a perfect place for her and her eight ducklings to live. But when the busy streets of Boston become too risky for her and her family to navigate, the local police step in to make sure Mrs. Mallard and her ducklings—Jack, Kack, Lack, Mack, Nack, Ouack, Pack, and Quack—make it to their new home safely. A beautiful portrayal of one duck family’s devotion and perseverance, this picture book is a wonderful representation of how families overcome hard times together and a compassionate reminder to trust in the goodness of humanity.
This beloved classic has been reimagined in the 75th-anniversary edition to include a full-color map of Boston, fancifully illustrated by Caldecott winner Paul Zelinsky, and comes complete with a CD-audio recording for a truly immersive experience.

About the Author
McCloskey grew up in Hamilton, Ohio, the setting for Homer Price, his portrait of a quintessential American boyhood. He studied art at Vesper George School of Art in Boston, and continued his studies at the National Academy of Design in New York. He was awarded the Prix de Rome, but delayed his study abroad until after World War II. Subsequently he and his wife, Margaret Durand, moved to Maine, where their two daughters were raised, and where McCloskey found inspiration for many of his books.
Robert McCloskey’s ducklings are immortalized as bronze statues in Boston’s Public Gardens, and are visited by countless children. He leaves a legacy of books that have proved enduringly beloved.

About the author

John Robert McCloskey (September 15, 1914 – June 30, 2003) was an American writer and illustrator of children's books. He both wrote and illustrated eight picture books and won two Caldecott Medals from the American Library Association recognizing the year's best-illustrated picture book. Four of those eight books were set in Maine: Blueberries for Sal, One Morning in Maine, Time of Wonder, and Burt Dow, Deep-water Man; the last three all on the coast. His best-known work is another of the picture books, Make Way For Ducklings, set in Boston. In longer works, he both wrote and illustrated Homer Price and he illustrated Keith Robertson's Henry Reed.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 21, 2024I got it for my great grandson because it was my favorite book. This special edition made it an even more special gift at a fancy baby shower. So he’ll have to wait a few years to hear it and maybe read it to his little brother coming along.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 5, 2018Excellent, excellent book. Very sweet. My two year old daughter sat through the book happily, and said it was “really sweet,” and now has been toting a duckling around, making “nests” for it. The story line is just the kind of thing I want for a young child. Family-centered but not over-idyllic (Mr. Mallard has to go and look for new places, and Mrs. Mallard is competent while he’s away, but they reunite at the end,) and also teaches respect for public places, the need for parks and green spaces, and the potential for quality, gentle law enforcement. I especially liked how Mrs. Mallard was portrayed as a great mother. This is a gentle, sweet book, with fantastic, funny illustrations. I love it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect
If you're looking at this at all you probably already know that the books of Robert McCloskey have thrilled generations of children. Their gentle, humorous stories are the perfect antidote to the noise & mindless commotion of modern life. There is beautiful artwork, pleasant characters, a little stress & a happy conclusion. This book along with "Blueberries for Sal" are my personal favourites & cannot be recommended too highly.
