What if you thought you murdered your best friend? And if everyone else thought so too? And what if the truth doesn't matter?

After Lucy is found wandering the streets, covered in her best friend Savvy’s blood, everyone thinks she is a murderer. Lucy and Savvy were the golden girls of their small Texas town: pretty, smart, and enviable. Lucy married a dream guy with a big ring and an even bigger new home. Savvy was the social butterfly loved by all, and if you believe the rumors, especially popular with the men in town. It’s been years since that horrible night, a night Lucy can’t remember anything about, and she has since moved to LA and started a new life.

But now the phenomenally huge hit true crime podcast "Listen for the Lie," and its too-good looking host Ben Owens, have decided to investigate Savvy’s murder for the show’s second season. Lucy is forced to return to the place she vowed never to set foot in again to solve her friend’s murder, even if she is the one that did it.

The truth is out there, if we just listen.

4.5/5 ⭐️ I loved this book and how it all came together. It is such a good thriller , plus it combines the story with a modern day true crime podcast. It was so realistic and believable. I really had no idea where it was going to take me. The writing went from real time to flash backs and then added in the true crime podcast interviews. It had the perfect amount of drama and twist and turns. I wish I would’ve gotten a little more with the ending but it was so good! I loved the sarcasm and humor throughout! The problem is the only person with the victim was her best friend Lucy, eh was found miles away bloody, injured and with no memory of the entire night. Lucy comes back to Texas for her grandmothers birthday and actually agrees to do an interview for this podcast even though she has never given an interview. However, he story is the same, she has no memory of that night, but for some reason she keeps seeing her dead best friend all around. I love a who did it novel where you figure out the clues as the main character does. I loved the setting of this story, the characters, and the writing style. The romance felt a little over the top-I don’t think it’s very realistic to have everyone in love with the main character, but still a good read. The podcast was a fun angle and I really enjoyed the mystery!

Amy Tintera’s Listen for the Lie offers an intriguing twist on the true crime phenomenon, following Lucy, a woman who may or may not have killed her best friend, Savvy. With no memory of that fateful night and the court of public opinion already against her, Lucy is forced to confront her past when a wildly popular true crime podcast reopens the case.

The novel starts strong with an engaging, fast-paced narrative and a compelling protagonist. Lucy is flawed, sarcastic, and messy, which makes her an interesting lead. The podcast element adds a modern, immersive touch that keeps the story feeling fresh and relevant. The small-town Texas setting is also well-drawn, adding layers of tension as Lucy returns to face old rumors and unresolved trauma.

However, while the premise is strong, the execution falls a bit short. The pacing drags in places, with some sections feeling repetitive, and the final reveal—while satisfying—lacks the punch of a truly shocking thriller. The chemistry between Lucy and podcast host Ben Owens feels somewhat underdeveloped, making parts of the subplot feel rushed.

How it started: Lucy and Savvy were best friends, but Savvy ended up dead! Who murdered her and WHY???

🕵️Was it Lucy or was it someone else in the circle of friends. Hmm! One thing is for sure, Lucy still cannot remember that night after a certain point in time, even after all of these years. Lucy leaves her new home in L.A. and heads to her small hometown where she grew up in Texas, where everybody knows everything about everyone! Lucy will meet up with L.A. murder podcaster, Ben Owens, where the two of them will investigate clues, interview the locals, and eventually figure out who murdered Savvy in that small town of Texas!

This book has the best sense of humor with amazing banter, it is absolutely brilliant! We all know that grandma stole the show, and that she is absolutely the best kind of person to be around. She is rotflmao FUNNY! I cannot tell you how many times I re-wound, and listened again! Chapter 25 is a blast, as we have cracking up laughter with the three generations of ladies, Lucy with her mother and grandmother. Their banter is off the charts wildly funny!

The twists & turns are delightful, they will send you on a wild goose chase, and have your head spinning with wonder! I could not turn the pages fast enough to find out “whodunnit!” This story is a lot of fun, and at the same time very mysterious with a-lot of suspense.

🏆The narration on this book should absolutely receive a BEST OF award!
    I highly recommend listening!

This book is definitely a “best of 2024!” 🙌

    Bravo, bravo, bravo!!!

I had been awaiting to read this book for a bit. I had heard many good things and there is of course much hype around this book. I personally really enjoyed how the book was styled and written. It was fun and translated the story well. I loved the characters. For me that was the best part. It gave me Stephanie Plum vibes complete with it's own eclectic granny. It was a fast pace, fun, and whitty little story. It was quite predictable for your average psychological thriller reader, but I still enjoy the journey it took me on. Not a full 10 out of 10 but for sure worth your time as it was very enjoyable to read. I give it over all about a 8.8 out of 10 stars! I totally wouldn't mind more from these characters... Just sayin....

It was wonderful, and I truly look forward to her next novel. I can't recommend this novel enough.

Such a good read! Really well written and kept my interest completely, from start to finish. I’m always pessimistic about endings, they rarely seem satisfying.. mainly because you don’t want the story to end, or it doesn’t quite live up to what you had in your head, but the ending was great and the characters say and do all the things you hope for 😆

I will say, the frequency of imaginary killings don’t do anything for the plot and could definitely have been left out. They’re more annoying than anything.
