The White Lotus meets Agatha Christie in this bold novel from a #1 New York Times bestselling author—"a clever, witty, and fast-paced whodunit" (Harlan Corben).

A Reese's Book Club Pick!

Ellery Wainwright is alone at the edge of the world.   She and her husband, Luke, were supposed to spend their twentieth wedding anniversary together at the luxurious Resort at Broken Point in Big Sur, California. Where better to celebrate a marriage, a family, and a life together than at one of the most stunning places on earth? But now she’s traveling solo. To add insult to injury, there’s a wedding at Broken Point scheduled during her stay.

Ellery remembers how it felt to be on the cusp of everything new and wonderful, with a glimmering future just ahead. Now, she isn’t certain of anything except for her love for her kids and her growing realization that this place, though beautiful, is unsettling.

When Ellery discovers the dead groom, she realizes that she is not the only one whose future is no longer guaranteed. Before the police can reach Broken Point, a mudslide takes out the road to the resort, leaving the guests trapped. When another guest dies, it’s clear something horrible is brewing. Everyone at Broken Point has a secret. And everyone has a shadow. Including Ellery.

“Dead bodies, brutal secrets and a fabulous view –
The Unwedding is proof that Ally Condie knows exactly what we love and what we fear. Come take a wonderful rollercoaster of a trip, but don’t expect much sleep.”―Brad Meltzer, New York Times bestselling author of The Lightning Rod

"A knife’s-edge whodunit that’s as much a thriller as it is an exquisite meditation on grief and loss."―
Nicola Yoon, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Everything, Everything

“A classic mystery for a modern world – I couldn’t put it down!”―
Ally Carter, New York Times bestselling author of The Blonde Identity

"An idyllic setting turns deadly in Ally Condie’s smart and twisty debut adult thriller. With an isolated resort, a killer on the loose, and a cast of compelling characters, THE UNWEDDING kept me on the edge of my seat from beginning to end. A clever and suspenseful mystery where
everyone has something to hide."―Megan Miranda, New York Times bestselling author of The Only Survivors

"Ally Condie's dazzling debut
The Unwedding is a wild and mysterious suspense novel that will have you turning pages long into the night with the lights on! A lovely wedding is planned at a remote resort with a fresh, original and shady cast of characters. In the author's brilliant hands, the happy occasion can only lead to murder. Buckle up!" ―Adriana Trigiani, bestselling author of The Good Left Undone

“A gorgeous murder mystery that explores what it means to be human—the pain and the love.”―
Kirkus, Starred Review

“This is an engrossing story with an interesting take on grief and forgiveness, with pieces of art found at the resort adding a fun element. Edgar Award–winning YA author Condie’s adult debut is an unpredictable locked-room mystery for Agatha Christie fans and all readers looking for an intelligent read.”―
Booklist

“Condie's first novel for adults is a juicy read that kept me guessing until the very last page. Ellery is a protagonist you'll feel deeply for, and the supporting characters are impressively and successively fleshed out. You'll also, if you're anything like me, appreciate the vivid descriptions of the beauty of Big Sur (which, coupled with the suspenseful plot, will call to mind another Witherspoon project, Big Little Lies). All in all? Great choice, Reese.”

Intriguing, Thoughtful, Heartfelt, & Original
There aren’t many murder mystery novels that actually make you contemplate love, family, friendships, nature and art in the same story. Ally masterfully combines all of these with a mystery that was impossible for me to unravel myself but made total sense in the end. I’m usually a pretty good plot sleuth, and can figure out where an author is heading before they get there. But not with this book. Definitely add this one to your TBR stack!

A thrilling read full of relatable living characters and tons of mystery. Highly recommend this read to all who want to play detective and feel like you made new friends at the same time.

The Unwedding is a mix of amateur sleuthing, mystery, and suspense, all set against the backdrop of a luxurious resort in Big Sur. With elements of a locked-room and cozy-type mystery, the setting is spectacular – and captivated me from the start. Condie paints the surroundings so well that you can almost hear the waves and feel the tension in the storm. For audiobook fans, the included PDF map of the resort is a cool bonus, and helps to immerse you even further into the setting.

Unfortunately, the character development and pacing is lackluster. Ellery, the protagonist, is a recently divorced single mom who is at the resort alone and becomes stranded after a mudslide isolates the guests. She is kind and sweet but is constantly struggling with her past trauma—both from her marriage and a tragic accident. While this backstory provides depth, it also renders her character more passive than proactive. I found her internal dialog to be overly whiny at times, especially when placed alongside the urgency of the murder mystery plot. As a trauma counselor, I appreciate that Condie made a strong effort to explore the complexities of grief and loss through Ellery. However, in this was just the wrong setting for it and it went on way too long. Her constant dwelling on the past seemed to overshadow the forward momentum of the plot. While imperfect protagonists can add depth, Ellery's emotional struggles felt mismatched with the story’s pace, making her less suited for the demands of this suspenseful narrative.

I thought the plot started strong, but it gradually loses momentum, and then bottoms out completely.
What begins as a tense, engaging mystery gets bogged down by unnecessary dialogue and side plots that don’t push the story forward. There’s a sense that Condie, got a little lost in her beautiful setting and left the main plot to fizzle out instead of intensifying. The ending felt rushed to me and was overloaded with information—some of which didn't seem to tie into the final resolution. Key details were thrown in without enough explanation or connection to the story’s earlier developments.

This is definitely a visually rich and atmospheric read that may appeal to fans of cozy mysteries and isolated settings, but its uneven pacing, boring characters and overwhelming conclusion left me unsatisfied. Honestly, I couldn’t wait for it to end.

This was certainly a book with many twists and turns. It took until the end to find out, who killed who. There was a variety of personalities, in the characters. It was interesting how they became, friends for life!
I loved the Big Sur area for the many landslides, it has had, to make it cut off from everything. It was believable!

The Unwedding is a murder mystery… and so much more. Having never read one of her books before I don’t know if this is normal for Condie; she throws out a lot of red herrings which insures a literary maze-like experience.
As I mentioned the book is so much more than a murder mystery to me. First are the richly developed characters and second is the beautiful setting and third is the use of art and narrative to frame the story.
I hope you will read it and like it as much as I do.

Fun start to the book with an engaging plot and likeable characters. But the story unraveled with an overdone "who done it" reveal followed by a trying-to-hard-to-be-philosophical ending that got a little hokey. Enjoyable read but a let down at TBE end.

I really enjoyed this story —from the very beginning I was questioning the characters, how everyone might be connected, back stories that haven’t been revealed yet, and what would happen next. It was a story that kept me guessing, and though I didn’t love the ending (something felt a little off), overall I really enjoyed the book. If you like mystery and intrigue, this is a solid read.
