The Unwedding: Reese's Book Club Pick (A Novel) Paperback – June 3, 2025
A Reese's Book Club Pick!
Ellery Wainwright is alone at the edge of the world. She and her husband, Luke, were supposed to spend their twentieth wedding anniversary together at the luxurious Resort at Broken Point in Big Sur, California. Where better to celebrate a marriage, a family, and a life together than at one of the most stunning places on earth? But now she’s traveling solo. To add insult to injury, there’s a wedding at Broken Point scheduled during her stay.
Ellery remembers how it felt to be on the cusp of everything new and wonderful, with a glimmering future just ahead. Now, she isn’t certain of anything except for her love for her kids and her growing realization that this place, though beautiful, is unsettling.
When Ellery discovers the dead groom, she realizes that she is not the only one whose future is no longer guaranteed. Before the police can reach Broken Point, a mudslide takes out the road to the resort, leaving the guests trapped. When another guest dies, it’s clear something horrible is brewing. Everyone at Broken Point has a secret. And everyone has a shadow. Including Ellery.

“This is an engrossing story with an interesting take on grief and forgiveness, with pieces of art found at the resort adding a fun element. Edgar Award–winning YA author Condie’s adult debut is an unpredictable locked-room mystery for Agatha Christie fans and all readers looking for an intelligent read.”―Booklist
“Condie's first novel for adults is a juicy read that kept me guessing until the very last page. Ellery is a protagonist you'll feel deeply for, and the supporting characters are impressively and successively fleshed out. You'll also, if you're anything like me, appreciate the vivid descriptions of the beauty of Big Sur (which, coupled with the suspenseful plot, will call to mind another Witherspoon project, Big Little Lies). All in all? Great choice, Reese.”

- Reviewed in the United States on September 7, 2024The Unwedding is a mix of amateur sleuthing, mystery, and suspense, all set against the backdrop of a luxurious resort in Big Sur. With elements of a locked-room and cozy-type mystery, the setting is spectacular – and captivated me from the start. Condie paints the surroundings so well that you can almost hear the waves and feel the tension in the storm. For audiobook fans, the included PDF map of the resort is a cool bonus, and helps to immerse you even further into the setting.
Unfortunately, the character development and pacing is lackluster. Ellery, the protagonist, is a recently divorced single mom who is at the resort alone and becomes stranded after a mudslide isolates the guests. She is kind and sweet but is constantly struggling with her past trauma—both from her marriage and a tragic accident. While this backstory provides depth, it also renders her character more passive than proactive. I found her internal dialog to be overly whiny at times, especially when placed alongside the urgency of the murder mystery plot. As a trauma counselor, I appreciate that Condie made a strong effort to explore the complexities of grief and loss through Ellery. However, in this was just the wrong setting for it and it went on way too long. Her constant dwelling on the past seemed to overshadow the forward momentum of the plot. While imperfect protagonists can add depth, Ellery's emotional struggles felt mismatched with the story’s pace, making her less suited for the demands of this suspenseful narrative.
I thought the plot started strong, but it gradually loses momentum, and then bottoms out completely.
What begins as a tense, engaging mystery gets bogged down by unnecessary dialogue and side plots that don’t push the story forward. There’s a sense that Condie, got a little lost in her beautiful setting and left the main plot to fizzle out instead of intensifying. The ending felt rushed to me and was overloaded with information—some of which didn't seem to tie into the final resolution. Key details were thrown in without enough explanation or connection to the story’s earlier developments.
This is definitely a visually rich and atmospheric read that may appeal to fans of cozy mysteries and isolated settings, but its uneven pacing, boring characters and overwhelming conclusion left me unsatisfied. Honestly, I couldn’t wait for it to end.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 14, 2025This was certainly a book with many twists and turns. It took until the end to find out, who killed who. There was a variety of personalities, in the characters. It was interesting how they became, friends for life!
I loved the Big Sur area for the many landslides, it has had, to make it cut off from everything. It was believable!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 27, 2025The Unwedding is a murder mystery… and so much more. Having never read one of her books before I don’t know if this is normal for Condie; she throws out a lot of red herrings which insures a literary maze-like experience.
As I mentioned the book is so much more than a murder mystery to me. First are the richly developed characters and second is the beautiful setting and third is the use of art and narrative to frame the story.
I hope you will read it and like it as much as I do.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 23, 2024I really enjoyed this story —from the very beginning I was questioning the characters, how everyone might be connected, back stories that haven’t been revealed yet, and what would happen next. It was a story that kept me guessing, and though I didn’t love the ending (something felt a little off), overall I really enjoyed the book. If you like mystery and intrigue, this is a solid read.

The book was good but a little long winded I thought. The characters kept going around in circles in trying to solve the murders without really getting anywhere.

The book was well written and suspenseful. There was a lot packed into the ending. It wasn’t all needed and made the ending a bit over the top.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tolles Buch.
Das Buch ist von Anfang bis Ende sehr spannend, da man von Anfang bis Ende miträtselt, auch die Geheimnisse, die die Protagonist*innen bewahren sind durchwegs spannend.
