Gr 5-8-Bird and Squirrel are unlikely friends. Bird is carefree, reckless, and always looking at the bright side of situations. Squirrel is nervous, pragmatic, and easily frightened. In an apparent homage to Aesop, the story begins with Squirrel anxiously gathering acorns for the winter while Bird flies around without any worries or responsibilities until he discovers that he's being stalked by a malicious cat. Despite the fact that he doesn't want to get involved, he finds himself coming to Bird's assistance and, after Squirrel's acorn trove is destroyed, the pair sets off on a southward adventure to escape the cold of winter and the cat's wrath. On the way, they encounter much comical misfortune and learn important lessons about friendship, teamwork, and enjoying life to its fullest. Young readers will enjoy the dynamic between the quirky duo and the humorous situations (and the clever yet slapstick ways in which they deal with them). When James Burks was little, there was only one thing that he wanted to be when he grew up; a light-saber-wielding, truck-driving space pirate with a monkey for a first mate. But since his parents refused to buy him a monkey, he had to choose the next best thing; a pen-wielding father of two with a lovely wife, two cats, and two dogs, a constant hunger for Mexican food, a love of running marathons, writing stories and drawing pictures about anything and everything he can imagine. This led James to a long career working in animation on various feature films and television shows, including Space Jam, the Iron Giant, the Emperor’s New Groove, Atlantis, Treasure Planet, Home on the Range, Wow Wow Wubbzy, the Bravest Warriors and most recently the reboot of the Power Puff Girls (just to name a few).

James is also a published author who has written and illustrated numerous books for kids, including his long-running seven-book graphic novel series Bird and Squirrel, published by Scholastic/Graphix, which has been translated into Czech, Spanish, French, Castilian, Chinese, and even Farsi (the pirated edition in Iran). His other published works include Gabby and Gator (Yen Press), Beep and Bah (Carolrhoda), Pigs and a Blanket (Disney/Hyperion), and When Pigs Fly (Disney/Hyperion). He also has a new graphic novel series called Agent 9, published by Putnam/Penguin.

    This is a wonderful book for reluctant readers. The story is about a Bird and Squirrel odd couple and their miss adventures. Very cute and funny.
    Our local library, book mobile, suggested this book for my son. He has a learning disability and is be low grade level for reading comprehension. This book was also above his reading level (at the time). I was sure he didn't read it at all. This series is graphic novel style. When the book was returned the librarian asked what his favorite part was. My son flipped right to the pages that was his favorite and told the woman all about what happened as well as most of the story. I was thrilled. I have bought the all 4 books. My son has read them over and over. They are still some of his favorites.

    My kids (all boys) really enjoy graphic novels. This series is definitely one of our favorites! (I like reading it too :)

    We love Bird's happy-go-lucky personality and Squirrel's uptight accountant personality and the way that plays out when they're out adventuring together. We love the humorous and creative storyline- it's especially nice that there's no crude stuff. (We're tired of finding out *after* we order a children's book, that the dialogue is full of annoying crude predictable humor).

    We have all 4 books in the Bird & Squirrel series and my 10 year old regularly re-reads through all of them- which is saying something because he doesn't really like reading. Thank you so much James Burks! Please keep them coming! (We've pre-ordered "All Tangled Up" and my son can't wait to read it :)
