Unique silicone bottomed ice cube trays
I was looking for a new set of ice cube trays - nothing wrong with the ones that came with our Whirlpool fridge more than 10 years ago, but wanted to try something new, and these seemed to have a unique design that made me want to give them test drive. The trays arrive inside of an ice bin with cover, which is nice since you can store your ice without worrying about them developing off flavors from other things in the freezer. This version contains six separate ice cube trays, each with a lid, so that you can stack them on top of each other without worrying about spillage. You also get a small ice scoop which no one in my family is likely to use. And the unique design feature I spoke of is that each tray compartment contains a silicone bottom. Instead of twisting the tray to release like a typical plastic tray, you take out the tray and wait at least 30 seconds (per the instructions) so they melt a little, then push the silicone so the cube drops out into the bin. In fact, the instructions warn you not to twist the trays, presumably due to potential damage. My freezer compartment gets extremely cold, so I found that I had to wait a couple minutes before the ice would release. The other thing to note, if it matters, is that the cubes are smaller, in fact quite a bit smaller, than typical cubes - I included a picture side by side with my normal tray. Whether the smaller cube is preferable over a larger cube is totally personal preference, I kind of like the small cubes because they chill down a drink faster. So what's the verdict? I like the size of the cubes, the ingenuity of the silicone release, the possible benefit of ice contacting silicone versus plastic, and the lids that allow easy stacking. I don't like having to wait for the cubes to thaw a bit before they will release. But that's a pretty small quibble.
