Very comfy pillow
4 out of 5 stars
Very comfy pillow
Very comfy pillow. I had memory foam pillows previously but they are hot to sleep on and too firm. This pillow is a good mix of comfort and support. It's actually pretty soft but moldable so I can puff if up where I need and it stays that way. Its actually a little too puffy for me. It's really tall and I have to punch it down so I'm not at a weird angle. The other user pics it seems the pillow is thinner. Overall comfortable.

This is an interesting situation, demonstrating to me that what you need and what you like are often different things.

Four years ago I was hit on my bike head-on by a car driving on the wrong side of the road. This resulted in neck, spine, and shoulder injuries that weekly physical therapy barely keep at tolerable levels. Pain is especially bad in the morning, or whenever I remain stationary too long. I have gone through several types of beds trying to minimize this problem, and quite a few pillows, including solid memory foam, down, poly fill, and others. A ComfortAir bed and adjustable frame offered some relief to my shoulders, but did little for my neck unless the head was adjusted to about a 30 degree angle. Changing pillow types didn't seem to make any difference to the pain, so I settled for the one I liked the best - soft down pillows.

After reading pillow reviews on the 'Sleep-like-the-dead web site, I decided to try the only pillow type I hadn't previously tested, the shredded memory foam pillow. I was skeptical, because the solid memory foam pillows seemed to be too hard and heavy, had a strong chemical odor that triggered asthma, and didn't really do anything to help the pain levels. My hope was that the shredded foam pillow would be a compromise between the block memory foam and the soft down pillows.

I received my pillow on a Friday, washed it to remove the faint chemical odor, (completely gone after the wash) and gave it a try. I was initially disappointed after down pillows, it felt very firm and unnatural, and the small lumps felt very prominent when I was handling the pillow. I didn't sleep very well the first night - the small lumps felt by hand were not noticeable to my face, but the firmness was enough to keep me shifting around and partially waking throughout the night.

But the next morning my neck was much less painful than usual. The second and third nights was pretty much like the first try, except my neck felt even better in the mornings. I wondered if it was coincidence, a placebo effect, imagination, or really a helpful pillow, and decided to stick it out for a while longer to see if I could get used to the firmness and sleep better, and see if the pain levels would continue to drop.

Monday I had my usual physical therapy session, but in the first 3 minutes of working on me the therapist asked what I was doing differently, as it was much easier to work on the neck muscles, there was less tightness, and alignment was somewhat better than normal! I explained that I was trying a new pillow, and she said "don't stop using it".

It has been about 3 weeks now, and I am sleeping better than before (except when I fluffed the pillow in the dryer, which made it thicker and took a couple days to get back to 'normal'.) I no longer need the head of the bed elevated to keep from waking up in pain, I installed the extra pillow cover, which further smoothed out the minor lumps, but seemed to make the pillow even more firm. My neck pain has leveled off at a new lower level, much more tolerable, and the therapist says the muscles and neck/shoulder alignments continue to be at much better levels than before, proving that the down pillows I like are not what I need.

I would like a softer pillow, but not if it means more neck pain. The small lumps of shredded material could be smaller, but that might change the effectiveness of the pillow, maybe? The pillow seems a bit thick to me, especially the first few nights after being fluffed, but the Physical Therapist feedback (and the improved pain levels) make me reluctant to mess with what is working. And actually, after 3 weeks, I am reasonably used to the more firm and dense pillow. It doesn't have the overwhelming stink of the premium block memory foam I tried (My wife uses it, and after a year it still has a chemical odor!), and is more comfortable as well.

So I would give it 3 stars for initial comfort, moving up to 4 stars as I grew used to it - And 5 stars for the most important part - pain relief.

The search for a new pillow started after a new dog "claimed" my old memory foam pillow making it unusable. Little did I realize, upon research, that memory foam pillows aren't usually used for 10+ years (I guess the fact that the glue holding the pieces together crumbled when the pillow was released from it case, was a good indicator that it was time to get a new pillow...but I digress). I began search for types - memory foam (too hot), latex (too bouncy), down (too expensive) and narrowed it down to the Snuggle-Pedic based not only on reviews, but also because of the company's 90-day trial period and their offer of free customization, I figured I had nothing to lose.

Many reviewers have commented on how the pillows are shipped. It must be a concern for some because I received an email from the company explaining how the item is delivered and how to plump up your pillow. The pillow arrives flattened out in a vacuumed sealed bag and rolled up (like a jelly roll). As soon as you open the bag, it begins to expand. I waited about a half and hour and while it would have been fine, I threw it into the dryer for an additional 20 minutes (as directed). That did the trick and the pillow fully expanded. People also mentioned the smell upon opening it. I am hyper sensitive to scents (they can trigger migraines) so was pleasantly surprised that the initial smell was hardly noticeable once I put a pillow case on it.

Now for actual use. I fall asleep on my back, roll to my side and at some point lie on my stomach. Because the pillow is made up of bits and pieces of memory foam it is easy to form it into the shape that will feel most comfortable. I found that I liked having a bit of a recessed area for my head - a little punching down and plumping the sides and it was just what I wanted. I slept very well and woke without a sore neck.

After years of a very firm memory foam, I wasn't sure what to expect of something much softer and cozier. Somehow this pillow is both cozy and firm - firm under my head, yet soft surrounding it. I liked it so much I got my husband one. His transition is taking a bit longer as he is going from a 3" thick memory foam (15 years old?) to a lofty pillow. He felt that it was too full until I showed him how to plump and shape it for his needs. I definitely recommend this pillow and am looking forward to having it for years to come.

I've been sleeping very happily on the Malouf shredded latex pillows for years and had to replace two of them after 4 years. I realized that something had changed in the manufacturing process and the new are not the same, so I have been hunting for a substitute. This Snuggle-Pedic was suggested by two friends and while I am not a fan of memory foam in general, I trust my friends.

So....it's been a couple of weeks with this pillow and I like it, but I don't love it. The pillow is easy to fluff - you pop it in the dryer for a few minutes and it expands nicely. There is no chemical scent so I was able to sleep with it from the first night - I really like that. It's not uncomfortable, it's just not quite right for me.

I'm a side sleeper and I like lots of snuggle around my neck and cheek if that makes sense. I tend to roll from side to side through the night. I also want support. One of things that I have noticed is that the stuffing shifts somewhere in the night. I can end up with the ends of the pillow being plush and full, but the middle is pretty thin - right where my head is. However, for a nap, this pillow is pretty darn good. But my search for one equal to my beloved original Malouf latex goes on.
