Grow Grass Successfully
Areas of Use

Prep, Apply, Water
Scotts EZ Seed is a revolutionary seeding mix that takes care of the seed for you, so you can grow thick, beautiful grass anywhere!* Scotts unique growing material absorbs water like a sponge, expanding to surround the seed in a moist, protective layer. Just prep the ground, put it down, water and let it go to work!
*Subject to proper care.

Prep
Prepare the area you want to grow grass by removing dead grass and loosening hard soil to help tiny seedlings root.

Apply
Evenly apply EZ Seed so the area is mostly covered, but bare ground is still visible, so that seed can reach the soil. The mulch will expand 4x upon watering to help cover the seed and keep it moist (use half as much for thin areas). Only apply the recommended amount so that seedlings have enough space to access water and nutrients. The seed germinates best when daytime temperatures are between 60°F and 80°F.

Water
A deep and thorough watering is the key to success. Gently water the area until EZ Seed is completely saturated and no more water is being absorbed (this may take several minutes). Avoid pooling water. When EZ Seed begins to turn light brown, it's time to water again. Keep kids, pets and lawn mowers off newly planted seedlings until the grass is 3 inches high.

Product Description
Scotts® EZ Seed® Patch & Repair Sun and Shade is a revolutionary grass seeding product designed to fill in bare spots on your lawn. This Sun & Shade grass seed grows in tough conditions, including full sun, dense shade, high traffic areas and on slopes. Scotts® EZ Seed® Patch & Repair consists of high performance grass seed, continuous release lawn food, and super-absorbent growing mulch material. Scotts® EZ Seed® Patch & Repair Sun and Shade also includes a tackifier to help reduce seed wash-away and a protectant to help keep seedlings safe from harmful diseases. There are three easy steps to success: 1) prep the area by removing dead grass and loosening hard soil, 2) evenly apply EZ Seed® so the area is mostly covered but bare ground is still visible, and 3) saturate with water until no more water is being absorbed and mulch turns dark brown. Plant seed in the spring or fall when daily average soil temperatures are consistently between 55°F and 70°F, or air temperatures between 60°F and 80°F. For best results, keep kids, pets, and lawn mowers off newly planted seedlings until the grass is 3 inches high.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 18, 2024Size: 40 lb.Style: 1 PackVerified PurchaseI have crab grass that's been filling up our entire backyard ever since we bought our home seven years ago. Crab grass grows fast and is an invasive weed. Because it's weed, I learned that you can slowly kill crab grass by watering less often and deeper into the soil so that only good grass' roots can get water. With that in mind, I wanted to put that knowledge to the test by ripping out some large portions of crab grass from the back yard. (TIP: water the soil a bit so it's easier to rip the crab grass out)
Once the ground was bare soil, I loosened it up a bit and pulled out any remaining crab grass/dead weed. Next, I sprinkled this Scotts seed (Tall Fescue grass) onto a small section to see what would happen. NOTHING GREW. I was disappointed. Then I read the instructions on the packaging:
1. Spread the seeds/fertilizer into the ground
2. Loosen/turn the soil
3. Water daily as needed to keep the soil moist for the first 2 weeks
I changed my sprinkler to water every 2 days for 5 minutes. End result? Grass grew after a week, and now it has increasingly become fuller! See photos for the results!
Once the grass has grown acceptably, I will change the sprinkler system to water less frequently again (but deeper through cycle soaking) in order to starve the crab grass weed of water and to help the new grass establish deeper roots.
SUMMARY: water often in the first 2 weeks to help sprout the new grass. Once it's established, water less frequently (but cycle soak) so the new grass grows deeper roots.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 21, 2021Size: 20 lb.Style: 1 PackVerified PurchaseOK so the lawn guys sometimes scalp some of the lawn (especially when slightly wet) leaving bare spots, and chasing them for seeding is a pain. SO, I tried this seed. Works pretty much as promised and quite a but faster than conventional seed. Two issues however: 1) Very pricey for the amount of coverage a 20 pound bag delivers (compares to about 1-2 pounds of seed) and even mores pricey in smaller bags. 2) Spreading this is quite messy. The fertilizer is a thin powder and gets on everything, clothes, hair etc with the slightest breeze, and even worse when I tried spreading it hand. Nevertheless, a good product, but pricey and probably best used with a down on the ground type spreader
- Reviewed in the United States on August 4, 2022Size: 20 lb.Style: 1 PackVerified PurchasePeople claiming this doesn't grow may have faced the same problem I did for half the patches I tried to fix: they had been so far gone for so long that the ground was just a mud cake. This prevents the exchange of air, water, and nutrients. You may as well sprinkle the product on concrete.
First aerate the soil. For small patches I just stabbed it with a large tent peg until thre were deep holes every inch or so apart. It has to be at a point where if you hosed it down with water, the water would all drain away instead of pooling up on top. (But don't actually hose it yet).
Now pour on the product as directed. Make sure at least a little of it gets into those holes you just made.
Finally water it until all the water soaks in multiple times. You'll see a glistening layer of water for a while, but it will absorb and become matte again. Keep doing that until there's no capacity for more water. If you run your sprinklers daily it'll probably stay that way, moist and dark, even through a hot day in direct sunlight.
If even after that it keeps drying up, caking, and cracking, you didn't aerate the soil enough. Instead of the mulch using the soil as an enormous moisture reserve, the mulch is literally left out to dry, and nothing will grow until you aerate the soil.
If you did all this right, you don't need to add anything else. If you don't do all this right, there's nothing you can add that will save it.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 11, 2016Size: 20 lb.Style: 1 PackVerified PurchaseUPDATED REVIEW- This spring, I got an early start and bought a few bags of Scotts EZ seed from my local Costco. I liked how the mulch mix immediately plumped up after rain showers, doing a great job of hiding the seeds from the birds while also keeping the seeds well hydrated. With this product, there were no birds scouring the yard for seed. And in as little as about a week, I was seeing signs of life in the form of sprigs bursting forth from the mulch mix.
I was impressed enough, that I went back to Costco to get a few more bags of this EZ seed but found they were completely sold out. So I came to Amazon and bought a few more here. It's been over a month now, and I'm seeing just a few sprigs here and there, but hardly a nice dense patch of grass in the areas I was treating.
I've bought six bags of this stuff so far and am not super pleased with the patchy results of very, very fine grass. In many areas, there has been zero germination. Here's what I suggest. Go to Home Depot, Lowe's or your local farm and garden store and get a big bag of grass seed suited for your area. Get some peat moss and pour it into a wheel barrow. Mix the seed in until you get a nice seed to "mulch" ratio and spread it. You'll save a ton of money and get even better results since you can add more seed to the mix this way. The peat will keep the seeds moist and act as as good growing medium while also helping to protect from birds.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 11, 2024Size: 20 lb.Style: 1 PackVerified PurchaseI have used this product several times to fix bare or poorly-growing areas in my lawns. If you follow the instructions (such as loosening the dirt in the area you plan to cover first), it really works well. I wish I had taken before & after photos to show you because I have several areas of my lawn that once looked anemic and are now lush and full. As long as you keep the area you covered consistently moist for the first few weeks, the grass will grow in beautifully. I definitely recommend this product.
