Dwell: A Journal for Naming, Processing, and Embracing Your Emotions Paperback – April 18, 2023
Purchase options and add-ons
This wise and inspiring book invites readers to welcome all of their emotions, positive or negative, to come sit and talk, as they would with a very good friend. Using personification as a tool, creative writing teacher and Positive Psychology practitioner Devon Loftus takes readers through a process of describing their emotions—joy, discomfort, anxiety, contentment—without judgment or shame. Thoughtful and comforting, this book will help readers reconnect to the place inside themselves where all their complex and beautiful emotions dwell.
In poetic essays that serve as inspiration, Loftus personifies more than fifty emotions—such as Playfulness, a redhead with three freckles on her right cheek only her closest friends notice, or Love, who slowly brings every person she passes on the street to life—to encourage readers to sit down with their emotions in a creative and curious way. According to Loftus, when we allow ourselves to view our feelings without judgment, we are able to witness them (and therefore ourselves) more fully, with all of their quirks and humanness. Dwell is an invaluable tool for readers seeking greater self-understanding.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 9, 2023This book is incredibly unique and special. Certainly unlike any other self help journal I have read. The author so perfectly couples beautiful writing with deeply thought provoking prompts that allows readers to explore their own inner workings. It’s like the author invites readers into a safe and warm place with the rawness and vulnerability of her writing and then passes the mic to the reader to help us explore our own emotional nuances. Additionally, it was incredibly easy to read and put down. You can go at your own pace and jump around. This is truly a book we all need and something we can make our own.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 9, 2023Dwell is a poetic story of how to be an emotionally intelligent, whole-hearted human. The way Devon tells the story of emotion will forever change the way I view my own. To put language to something as big as awe, joy, fear, passion is a gift I didn't know I so desperately needed. Every time I close this book I feel closer to myself. Thank you thank you thank you.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 12, 2023While reading through Dwell, I found myself welling up often. With each personified emotion, I was able to see a piece of myself reflected back - some of those pieces felt painful to face, while others had me feeling warm and filled with gratitude. Devon has an incredible power to capture the human experience with each of these essays and I finished the book feeling more connected to my personal embodiment of the range of emotions that accompany being a human.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 22, 2023A great tool for learning how to pinpoint your emotions.
