About the authors
I'm the author of the Pout-Pout Fish book series, illustrated by Dan Hanna. I'm also the author of Equality's Call (2020), illustrated by Magdalena Mora, a children's picture book about the history of U.S. voting rights.
Dan Hanna is composed of approximately 37 trillion cells. The great majority of these tiny troopers are working diligently to keep him going for a bit longer. He and his trillions of associates like to visit local coffee shops, scribble maniacally and laugh amongst themselves. They all live happily with his wife Jennifer (and all of her cells) in Camarillo, California.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 30, 2024This is a great story for any kid entering school for the first time. Pout pout fish gets a boost of confidence and support after much worrying about his first time at school! Relatable for young learners and a great book with rhyme and repetition. Pout Pout Fish is a family favorite and this story is right up there with the original.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 2, 2022As a mom, and a teacher, this book made me tear up the first time I read it with my son. My son is just starting preschool and he adores this book. We read it at least 4 times a week. The rhymes and the illustrations keep his attention, and I feel like every time I read it I notice something new in the illustrations too. Great book. Highly recommend! Also— I teach third grade and I would still consider reading this to them as well. Suitable for younger kids through lower level elementary in my opinion.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 23, 2020I had to roll my eyes at some of the reviews and "messaging" that were written.
NO WHERE in the book does pout pout fish say "he's stupid"
He says "I am not smart", "I'll never get it", "I don't belong" "I should forget it"
Upon entering his first day of school, he gets lost and doesn't know where to go. Peering in shyly to other classrooms, he feel he doesn't belong because everyone is working on projects/activities that are way above his level.
His teacher finds him as he's about to give up. She corrects his negative thoughts/feelings and affirms he doesn't have to know what he hasn't learned yet.
As a mother to a four year old it's easy to see my son getting frustrated, wanting to give up. However, channeling the emotions, correction/ affirming is part of helping him realize, he can do hard things.
At the end of the story the entire class looks back fondly on the message of positive self talk and realizing they were able to accomplish what they put their mind to, once they learned it.
Maybe a little deep of a review for a children's book. However, I felt the need to steer the message of what I think the book was trying to convey. Humans get frustrated, turned around, lost. It opened up conversation of daily frustrations and working through road blocks my kid faces every day. Get the book. It's pout pout fish.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 13, 2022I love this book. My kids are big fans of Pout Pout Fish and this book is great. It touches on worries at school with not being good enough. It was the perfect little gift to give my son on his first day of school this year.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 21, 2022Didn’t follow the theme of the original. They say sequels are never as good as the first but the story was still good for toddlers.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 19, 2024My grandson loves Pout Pout Fish!

5.0 out of 5 stars Livro bom para crianças pequenas que começaram a estudar

2.0 out of 5 stars Not a great story, quality of the book is standard
I bought this book because my daughter loves the original Pout Pout Fish story as well as the sweet dreams version. This book, however, I don’t particularly like because the entire story is about how hard school is and how the fish doesn’t fit in. It was filled with negative messages and only gets positive at the very end. In other words, the negativity of the book outweighs the positivity.
The condition of the book is fine and the delivery too. I just don’t like the content.

This is the 3rd Pout Pout book I have purchased and will by the series eventually.
My granddaughter who started kindergarten last September is in love with this book.
She even brought it for show and tell and the kids loved it.
