My Magnolia Summer: A Southern Family Drama of Self-Discovery Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 3,307 ratings

“[B]y writing My Magnolia Summer, a novel of low country food, family drama, and just the right amount of romance, Victoria Benton Frank shows that she is the rightful heir to the crown of summertime storytellers. Her mother would be so proud.” — Ann Patchett

Escape to the South Carolina Lowcountry, where family bonds and hidden secrets run deep. In this gripping tale of self-discovery, Victoria Benton Frank introduces us to Maggie, struggling to find her place in the world when she receives a phone call bringing her back to her hometown of Sullivan's Island.

In New York City winter never seems to loosen its hold and for South Carolina transplant Maggie (born Magnolia after the fairest summer flower) the balmy beach weather of April back home on Sullivan’s Island feels like a distant memory. Until a phone call from her sister, Violet, changes everything.

Gran, the treasured matriarch, has fallen into a coma after a car accident caused by Maggie’s troubled mother, Lily. But once Maggie returns, she finds that her hometown of Sullivan’s Island holds even more secrets. The Magic Lantern, the restaurant owned and run by generations of women in her family, is now rudderless, and her sister seems headed for a savage breakup.

Once she is between the marsh grasses and dunes of South Carolina, she feels herself changing like the Atlantic tides, rediscovering the roots she left behind, and a new and different version of herself—one who can see how a minor crash into the back of a very handsome farmer’s truck may become fortunate. Or perhaps it’s even… fate?

When the three generations of South Carolina women join forces—the family pillar Gran, troubled Lily, impulsive Violet, and redoubtable Maggie—anything is possible.

With stunning descriptions of the magic of the Lowcountry, this novel will transport you to a world of treasured family traditions and unexpected twists of fate.

Low country vibes ✌🏼
Idk about on Amazon but the reviews on Goodreads disappoint me for this beautiful little gem. It’s special to me as someone who lives just far enough away from SC that I can vacay here and close enough to where I know exactly where Sullivan island is and I’ve been. And I can picture the atmosphere. It’s not California beach vibes. It’s low country beach vibes ✌🏼I accidentally found this at my public library while looking do something else and loved it so much I had to buy a copy.

Victoria Benton Frank has written her OWN book, not her mother's. While it has similar setting and upbeat storyline, the voice is uniquely hers. The writing is intelligent and more complex even then her mom's (and I have read nearly all of DBFS work). I enjoyed the plot as i am a foodie, and I have also been to the low country and Charleston areas many times. The author went pretty easy on Maggie's mom, who was quite badly verbally abusive to Maggie, but she took the high road and love prevailed. I would have cut out the coma musings of gran, as they lent nothing to anything, but overall, it was a fun, enjoyable read.

This first novel of Victoria Benton Frank's is a worthy effort as she follows in her mama's footsteps. The characters are believable and multidimensional. It's easy to care about them. She writes excellent descriptive prose that really creates a sense of place. The plot is well developed and interesting although there were some loose ends and little mysteries left hanging for the next book. I personally wished to see those themes more resolved but I look forward to the next book.

As an avid reader of beloved Dorothea Benton Frank, Victoria has definitely made her late mother proud! If the first two pages of a book don't hook me, I put it down and maybe pick it up months later. This story immediately hooked me and I couldn't put it down!! Bravo, Victoria!! I can't wait to read your next book!!!

I always enjoyed Dorothea Benton Frank's books and was devastated to learn that she had passed away, so I am just thrilled that her daughter is now writing. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. Part of my family is in North Carolina, and while it's a little different from South Carolina, they are enough alike that it's comforting to read a book that showcases the thoughts and mannerisms of ladies in the South. I enjoyed the food tips and techniques. And mostly I enjoyed the "coming home" story. It is completely predictable, but sometimes that's exactly what you want. I am looking forward to the next book coming out later this year.

Of course there is shades of Dorthea in this book......being raised by the woman, you just knowing she was influenced all thru life on her Mother's love of the Southern art of how we speak and how we love to brag about our way of life which includes good food, love of family, community, faith in something bigger that governs us all and I'm positive her Mama is so proud! We are proud of our heritage and all good Southerners know that there are times from the very ancient past that we aren't proud of but we also know that this new "hate" that is damaging all we proud Southerners who worked just as hard as anybody else during the Civil Rights Movement knows that reverse discrimination is only prolonging a pain that we all know is politically driven and is not even close to the truth and is just muddying the waters more - rather than protecting what past work has already been fought for, shed blood for and in no way reflects the real truth about the New South. Its a gentle place to live and tourism alone should prove that guests are taken seriously and hospitality just seems to grow bigger every year. Its a gentle, slow speaking, neighbor loving, food worshiping (second only to our religious worship) and wonderful place to be from and a wonderful place to visit!! Miss Frank has done us proud with her book and I can't wait to read more about these characters in this book! I feel I know these people intimately (I'm sure every reader from the South is going to think this book has a few characters in it that we are related too!!!!

I have enjoyed reading Dorothea Benton Franks’s Lowcountry novels and I thought that her daughter Victoria’s debut book, following in her mother’s tradition, was a worthy successor to her work. I enjoyed the setting, the food scene descriptions and the storyline of generations of women. With the addition of a romance, you have the makings of a fun & entertaining summer read.
