Editorial Reviews

Review

"Swan Song is a clever and, ultimately, moving multilayered narrative in which the various social worlds of Nantucket mingle, crash and burn."―Maureen Corrigan, The Wall Street Journal

"Hilderbrand's final Nantucket novel will draw old and new readers out of the woodwork . . . There are plenty of Easter eggs for longtime fans, but even those diving in to her exquisite writing for the first time are in for a treat: a story that feels like it's being told over cocktails at the Oystercatcher, perfectly paced for maximum drama with characters you can't get enough of. This is aspirational escapism at its finest."
 ―
Susan Maguire, Booklist (starred review)

“Hilderbrand closes out her long run of Nantucket novels with an engrossing story of three mysterious newcomers…Strong characterizations and delicious moments of tension make this a worthy note to end on. Readers will be riveted.”―
Publishers Weekly

“A stranger comes to town, and a beloved storyteller plays this creative-writing standby for all it’s worth.”―
Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

“Elin Hilderbrand is the doyen of the beach read, the queen of all things sun, fun, and intrigue, one of the best to ever do it, and
Swan Song is the cleverly titled final installment of her popular Nantucket series . . . You’ll see all your old favorite characters from the previous Nantucket novels, and this final act is chock-full of all Hilderbrand’s hallmarks, from family drama to romance."―Harper's Bazaar

“Hilderbrand is exiting on a high with this dramatic tale featuring a recently arrived, ostentatiously wealthy family whose presence sets off strange happenings, including a possible murder.”―
Christina Ianzito, AARP

A great Elin Hilderbrand novel for the culmination of her Nantucket series

A great Elin Hilderbrand novel for the culmination of her Nantucket series
This Elin Hilderbrand book was just fun to read! It will make you fall in love with Nantucket all over again. Even though I had previously read several of Hilderbrand's novels, I had not read the previous three in the Nantucket series. I do definitely feel like Swan Song can be read as a stand alone. Chief of police, Ed Kapenash, is nearing his retirement after serving the people of Nantucket for 35 years. His wife wants nothing more than his retirement to arrive and they then enjoy their golden years on the idyllic island that they have made their home for more than three decades. A wrench in the smooth transition from chief to soon to be civilian arrives in the form of the blustery, yet rogue, newcomer couple, Bull and Leslee Richardson. The Richardsons blow in to the island from the Virgin Islands (just the last of many of their stops). After purchasing an ocean front mansion for 22 million, they soon become the "it" couple who throw the best, most sought after, outlandish parties. The Richardsons aren't the only new ones to the island. Their own new personal concierge, Coco, who they met while she was serving up drinks at a St John's bar, arrives a few days before them. For a bit, Coco wonders if she may not have been conned by their almost too good to be true job offer. Coco, who may know a thing or two about "conning" herself, lucks out on the ferry to the island where she meets Kacy, the chief's daughter. Kacy is returning to Nantucket after seven years as a neonatal nurse because she is "nursing" a broken heart over a busted relationship. What ensues are a lot of raucous parties, some conniving, a little romance. and a mystery to solve. I felt this was an excellent beach read with interesting characters, a delectable setting, and an intriguing plot. Swan Song hits the shelves June 11th. If you are a Elin Hilderbrand fan, grab this one and take the journey to Nantucket once again. Thank you, NetGalley and Little, Brown and Company for this ARC.

Like the other books in this series this book was very interesting with an eclectic group of characters. My only issue with some of the books in the series is that they end leaving with questions. For instance it seems like Ed died in the end… that is so sad
  • Reviewed in the United States on June 20, 2024
It’s the start of the summer and the arrival of the elite, cultured, seductive Richardsons – husband and wife Bull and Leslee – has Nantucket locals in an excited frenzy.

Everybody who is anybody is dying to be invited to one of the extravagant, exclusive parties at their newly-purchased, twenty-two-million-dollar, seaside mansion – 888 Pocomo Road – but only a select few will be deemed worthy to glide its halls.

Fast forward to August and the Richardsons are persona non grata. What happened?

Then on the evening of August 22nd a double tragedy strikes the Richardsons. While partying out to sea aboard their yacht (with some non-locals) they receive a call from the Fire Chief to say their house is ablaze. And when their boat docks, they are one person short – a young woman is missing presumed to have gone overboard. Did she fall? Did she purposefully jump? Or was she pushed? It’s time for the Richardsons to face the music.

Swan Song was an indulgence. I relished all the juicy interpersonal melodrama, scandalous behaviour, betrayals, sweet romances, emotional highs and lows, side of mystery, and immense wealth and privilege. It was hard for me not to daydream over what it would be like to be one of these characters living the dream in a lap of luxury on Nantucket (lobster rolls, yes please). The descriptions of 888 Pocomo Road and everything within its walls (clothes, food, etc) were hilariously insane – fascinating yes, but such an over-the-top waste of money. There were a good mix of spoilt unlikeable characters coupled with more down-to-earth ones to keep me happy and entertained.

It’s the fourth in a series but can be enjoyed by itself. I’ve only read #3 The Perfect Couple (5 stars), meaning some of the characters were familiar to me, but most were new to Swan Song and specific to this story. And any that were regulars were introduced with all the relevant information from the previous instalments.

I’m sorry to report that after thirty fictional books set on Nantucket, Elin Hilderbrand is retiring so sadly Swan Song is her last release. I wish her the best, and luckily for me I still have a lot of her backlist to read including the first two in this series.

I devoured the audiobook, and Laurence Bouvard was sensational. I see she has also narrated some of this author’s previous books which makes me so happy. Elin Hilderbrand read the final chapter which left me misty-eyed.

A poignant and touching send off!

A story with lots of characters on elite island off MA. Lots of local history, favorite eating spots, shopping…. I didn’t like the quick turns from character to character, too disjointed for my taste. Overall a good read.

I love Elin Hilderbrand's books, and have read most or all of them. She is normally an excellent writer.

This is the first book of hers I've read where I found one of the main threads in the plot to be completely implausible. From the very first party Leslee Richardson throws, it's blindingly obvious that she is drugging her guests without their consent or permission. I mean dozens of respectable, middle-aged guests wake up the next morning still at the party (including the police chief), many of them naked?! And it doesn't occur to any of them that they got roofied? Really?

We are very close friends with half a dozen native Nantucket families and have attended parties in their homes, as well as quite a few parties in the homes of the super-rich summer people, and every one of those parties has been just a nice, normal gathering, with fully-clothed, well-behaved people chatting over a glass of wine and some appetizers or dinner.

I also have 3 friends who actually got roofied by a classmate at our 25-year high-school reunion. The victims immediately realized they'd been drugged as soon as they woke up the next morning, got blood tests to confirm, and pressed charges against the jerk who drugged them. That's how people in real life react to this situation. They don't just go along cluelessly and keep going to parties at the same person's house all summer, allowing themselves to be drugged over and over, without realizing what's going on. In the book, the police chief finally realizes he's been drugged several parties in, towards the end of the summer. That's just not credible.

I also didn't love the vague ending of the book, or the way the narrative kept hopping back and forth in time (that's always super annoying). BUT ... all that being said, Swan Song is still a fun read, and as Elin Hilderbrand's last book, I wouldn't have missed it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Final Novel From the Queen of Nantucket
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 16, 2024
I first came across an Elin Hilderbrand novel about 15 years ago in the library of Angaga Island in the Maldives. Holidaymakers of all nationalities had left behind books and one of the American guests had shelved their copy of A Summer Affair. I read it on my sun lounger in between long swims in the translucent turquoise ocean. The sea temperature was a gloriously warm 30c.

I absolutely loved the novel and when I got home I went on Amazon and ordered all Elin's back catalogue to be sent to me in London from the US, mainly in used paperbacks. My absolute favourite is The Blue Bistro. It is so realistic and well written that I genuinely felt as if I was working in that steamy little restaurant!

Soon I was up to date and reading every novel as soon as it was published. The one after A Summer Affair was available in the UK, as was every subsequent one. All of them except Elin's St John trilogy are set on Nantucket, an island I grew to love and feel I know even though I've not yet visited.

And so to Swan Song, Elin's final novel. Another well written and carefully crafted read with many familiar faces.

Eddie Pancik (The Rumor) is out of prison, and trying to flog gigantic $20m houses again. The Richardsons buy Triple 8 off him and commence to host the best parties on the island. In just two sybaritic months, they manage to fastrack their way into all the most sought after establishments, and the majority of the Castaways are seduced by them too.

The jamboree is cut short when the Richardsons' young assistant, Coco, goes missing off their yacht on the same night as the Richardsons' lavish new mansion burns down.

Ed Kabanash, a wonderful recurring character who is the Chief of Police on Nantucket, decides he will investigate Coco's disappearance, even though it means postponing his retirement.

Coco is a genuinely loveable character and I spent the whole book praying that Elin wouldn't kill her or Ed off as she did my other favourites Mallory in 28 Summers, Dabney in The Matchmaker and Merritt in The Perfect Couple (not to mention Tess in the Castaways who dies before the novel begins).

Losing a favourite author is always upsetting. Anita Shreve and Helen Dunmore are long gone, and now Elin has retired. I still live in hope this is not her last novel and that she'll re-emerge as the queen of an entirely different literary genre - maybe historical? A novel set on Nantucket during the whaling era? She even hints at this in the afternotes, stressing that this is her last 'Nantucket summer novel.'

This time the end was a bit sudden, otherwise another nice Nantucket novel as we know it.
I didn’t like the switch of the narrator perspective to first person and there were too many characters to keep track of.
