Books That Drive Kids CRAZY!: This Is a Ball (Books That Drive Kids CRAZY!, 2) Hardcover – Picture Book, June 13, 2017
Purchase options and add-ons
The Books That Drive Kids CRAZY! series offers parents, teachers, and storytellers a hilarious script for fun reading time together. Book 2, This Is a Ball, is a boldly absurd spin-off of concept books, and an audaciously contrarian invitation for readers to practice deadpan delivery: after all, the picture on the cover clearly shows a cube, not a ball. The page that declares a princess is flying a kite at the beach shows an alien holding a balloon in a city...and on and on. What is WRONG with this silly book? Kids will demand to know--and all readers will be howling with laughter all along the way. With strikingly simple text and art, Books That Drive Kids CRAZY! are ideal picks for emergent readers.

More Books that Drive Kids CRAZY! | After an unfortunate sneeze, an important letter is missing! This read-aloud is perfect for fans of The Book with No Pictures. | Another hilarious book, full of absurd contradictions, that will have giggling masses of readers demanding an explanation. | More nonsense ensues as the narrator claims that frogs and penguins are the same color as lobsters. What?? |
Editorial Reviews
Review
"A string of narratorial mistakes...gives children a chance to gleefully correct the adult reading it aloud....Another metafictive storytime crowd-pleaser."
―Kirkus Reviews
"It's a solidly funny concept...kids will have a ball with This Is a Ball."
―BCCB
"Kids will get a kick out of this mixed up tale."―Pregnancy & Newborn
"Funny, clever, deliciously dry...this book encourages kids to think outside the square, and hopefully, somewhere deep in that unlimited subconscious, understand that what we see is all about perception. What a powerful thought."―Kids' Book Review (Australia)
"[The Book with No Pictures, Press Here, and Mix It Up] are international bestsellers and deservedly so, but closer to home we now have a book which is just as delightfully frustrating, clever and nuts."―Children's Book Daily (Australia)
"Kids will fall into fits of giggles as you try to tell them a car is a bike, and they'll only stop laughing long enough to correct you or beg to hear it all again."―Newcastle Herald (Australia)
"Not only does this book encourage object recognition, it's crazy fun for your kids."―Perth's Child (Australia)
Praise for Did You Take the B from My _ook?:
"It's a winning bit of interactive silliness that offers insight into the way small changes can have big results where words are concerned."
―Publishers Weekly

- Reviewed in the United States on March 13, 2024I work in elementary schools with speech and language kiddos, and this book has been a GameChanger for us. Even the kiddos that I have a really hard time getting to verbalize anything would adamantly correct me when I kept mislabeling pictures and messing with them. It was just an absolute delight. In following sessions, I’ve had the kids specifically request my “This is a Ball” book and want to share it with kids in their gen ed classes. I just got the other two by the same authors because I am a little bit obsessed. Thank you thank you thank you!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 24, 2024My kids absolutely loved this book and kept correcting me on how I was saying the wrong things for what was on the pages. I’ll be reading this book to my son’s class in school soon. Highly recommend!!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 7, 2022This is a great book to get little ones to have a serious, but funny conversation with you. Correcting adults is not something they usually get to do, but this book makes that easy. We both laugh so much - I'm buying the sequel. Clever book!

- Reviewed in the United States on January 16, 2020The book is pretty fun and funny to read to children who know the words for the objects in this book, as they do, indeed, object and give the reader funny looks. This book is short and quite simplistic. I've bought the book for several people I know and everyone gets a laugh out of it. My one disappointment is the simplistic labeling in the book. A cube is a cube and a sphere is a sphere by definition, but the book uses a stereotypical princess in a dress with a crown and a green creature not known to science and "mis"-labels them respectively as a scary monster and happy princess. The whole premise of the book is that is mislabels things, so the fact that it labels these characters respectively implies that they are not such things, but who is to say that a green creature is not a happy princess or that the human in a dress with a crown is not a scary monster? Perhaps that's a good way to bring up the subject of stereotypes with children, but I was a little disappointed that the book subtly implies fixed roles. Otherwise, a good, fun little book.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 18, 2024The first time I read this to my daughter, we were crying laughing and it’s been a huge hit since. Now I buy it for all of her friend’s birthdays.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 25, 2022This book entertains and delights young children. I can’t keep it on the shelf at school. :).
- Reviewed in the United States on April 16, 2020I love this book and use it with my four year olds. They loved arguing with me and thought it was funny. It was very interactive and I am a pediatric speech therapist and was amazed at how much language and talking came out of me reading this book. I liked that the pictures are simple and clear and so it was easily understandable and easy to follow. The kids laughed a lot and really enjoyed this book. They wanted me to read it again which is the ultimate rave review for me!!
