About the author

I’m an editor and children’s author who specializes in immersive nonfiction storytelling for middle-grade readers—from historical biographies to contemporary topics like environmental stewardship, natural history, and food science. As a former American Girl magazine editor, I also have a knack for creating fun and whimsical content for young readers like DIYs and crafts, seasonal recipes, and STEM projects. When I’m not writing or reading, I’m dreaming up picture books (look for my debut picture book in 2022) and exploring the outdoors with my kayak and camera.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 9, 2018Such a great lesson in creativity for kids. Breaking the notion that creativity is just about drawing or being artistic. It’s about problem solving and finding relationships between things in unexpected ways. And how you can be creative in any field or interest. The balances fun examples and activities, with meaningful content that is easy to understand. Along with absolutely beautiful illustrations by my personal friend, the amazingly talented, Emily Balsley, this book is great for kids of all ages and even kids-at-heart like me.

I purchased this for my 12 year old daughter who’s working on being more gentle with herself. The positivity of these ideas and activities helps enhance her healthy relationship with herself.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 2, 2018My daughter really like the American Girls books that have been coming out lately. She has been reading and rereading this one. It has all sorts of inspiration to get the creative juices flowing and to boost self confidence.
It has five chapters - Creativity, Imagine, Make, Tinker, Finish. The first chapter plants some seeds about how to be creative, such as choosing an instrument. It doesn't have to be a musical one, although that's the example they give. It also has a hall of fame of creative women in different fields. The next chapter suggests ways to imagine new things and methods of finding inspiration. There are some blank pages for your ideas and several thought provoking questions to guide you. Chapters three and four get you started on making things and have lots of encouragement. They suggest positive ways to consider what you've made and says that you are not making mistakes, you are making new things. The last chapter helps you figure out when are satisfied with what you've created and how to save it if you want to do so.
All the pages are bright and colorful. There are plenty of positive illustrations of girls having fun and finding success in trying something out of the box. There are almost 100 pages of great ideas and the back has a tear out poster for easy access to inspiration hanging on your wall. My daughter hasn't hung it yet, but she tells me she really likes the book.

Wish had this one years ago.
My daughter has been writing in pretty journals since about age 7.
This one would have been perfect for her a few years ago but she is still liking it and she is well beyond the age range.
Has such neat ideas to make you think and the pages are inspiring.
Half the fun when she was little was to find a journal that was more than just a basic book with white pages.
She always picked out ones with something going on inside to keep her motivated to continue writing.
Now as a teenager she has such a love of the pen and it has been fun for her to go back through her journals and see her progress.
This one would be perfect to get your child started to see if they would like to journal or doodle or just put their moments down on the pages to look back at when they are an adult.
Such a motivational book this one is to get you to feel and be anything you set your mind to.
Both my daughter and I have enjoyed looking through this one and talking about it.
