Radical Acts Of Embodiment: Teaching and Practices of Katonah Yoga® Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 39 ratings

"Radical Acts of Embodiment" is a manual and manifesto. As a primer for practitioners of yoga, it contains practical information on techniques of Katonah Yoga, a syncretic Hatha yoga practice developed by Nevine Michaan, incorporating Taoist theory, geometry, metaphor, and imagination. But this book is also an attempt to bridge a perceived gap between personal practices and political action. This book posits that the personal is political and the political is practical. Our bodies are not abstract, nor are they delusional. They are not broken down mechanisms to be fixed nor problems to be resolved. Our bodies are our material, and we are in a moment of an explosion of opportunity for intelligent yogic practices to proffer other guidance: to suture the wound, to bind the riven, to braid the binaries, to turn us towards deeply sensate, sensual, and sensible embodiment.

Look y’all, I fall over (regularly) attempting balancing asanas and hadn’t heard of Katonah yoga and I still got so much out of this book - which spans the spectrum from practical technique (with lots of photos!) to esoteric wisdom. To quote the author, “many practices of self care have to do with setting up circumstances. You don’t stand over a plant demanding that it grow.” Buy this book and water yourself! Crack the carapace and soak a little queer poetic yoga sunshine!

Deep and soulful. I highly recommend it whether you’re planning on teaching or you’re interested in deepening your relationship with your practice and your life.

It’s one thing to have a yoga practice and another to embody the practice in its multiple aspects. This book is rich with essential advice to facilitate that path. It is an essential guide for building a practice that unites both the personal and communal as reflected in political awareness. Dages has a gift for sharing her expertise as a yoga instructor with a strong dedication to community. Of particular interest is the synthesis of the Katonah Yoga Method in accomplishing this goal. If you are familiar with this practice you will be delighted with the way it is presented. If it is new to you, it offers a fantastic overview of a method that will expand and offer insight into your current practice. Highly recommended!

This book is an anchor for me in my teaching and practice. It has become a powerhouse gift I share with my fellow teacher friends on their path. It's one of those books you return to over and over again. I am always finding new material, new ways of seeing the world, my practice and my teaching. Dages is a luminary.
