I was reluctant to open this package for review because I intend to give it to my 10-year-old grandson for Advent. I was pleasantly surprised to remove the cellophane outer wrap to find a nice box with easy access to the puzzle pieces, without having to open any of the "daily" perforations from top of the box. The box itself is somewhat cheap quality - not very thick cardboard that will tear easily. Some adult supervision might be needed to make sure only one day opens at a time because each day's perforation is very close to other days - I think it will be easy to "tear a bit too much" of the thin cardboard and accidentally open an adjacent day; however, the box should serve its purpose for 24 days. The flip cover on the box (see photo) will easily be cut away and saved for future reference if needed, even after the holidays. The flip cover shows all the puzzle solutions, with fairly clear but small drawings. As mentioned in other reviews, some folks may need a magnifying glass to read the solutions. I'm guessing my grandson will be able to read these without a problem, as they are similar in print size and font to many of the instruction manuals of his popular building block sets. I was able to carefully open one end of the box to remove the clear plastic divided tray that holds all the puzzles. The puzzles are packaged with all the smaller metal pieces in 2 rows and the larger wooden puzzles in the next 2 rows of the tray. The Advent box cover mixes the days from row to row, so the puzzle types will also be mixed. Mixing up the puzzle types will add to the "surprise" and hopefully maintain the challenge from day to day. One of the best packaging features is the extra care given to sealing each puzzle individually. As shown in my last couple photos, the small metal puzzles are each secured in individual zip-lock bags and the larger wooden puzzles are shrink-wrapped. This eliminates the potential "noise" from shaking the box - you know we ALL want to shake first to guess what's in store! The individual packages also keep the pieces together so they don't get lost while trying to open each day's surprise. This Advent calendar or any like it that contains such small pieces is intended for older children or adults. Parents will, of course, need to monitor younger siblings to ensure their safety, as these definitely pose a choking hazard. Overall, I'm impressed with the quality of this Advent calendar. I'm excited to give it to my grandson, as I think the puzzles will offer a challenge and a pleasant, quiet distraction for him during the holiday season. I envision him opening a puzzle each evening during his "wind down time." Another reviewer mentioned that once you master the first couple of puzzles, the rest are very similar. That would be fine with me, as I think it's important for a child to accept a challenge but also feel empowered by learning from experience and past achievements. If a feeling of success comes from a few puzzles during a time of year that is often hurried and stressful, then this is even better! I may purchase another of this Wooden Puzzle Advent Calendar for the office. We started the calendar tradition several years ago and draw a name each day from among coworkers in our small office. I think this would be a challenge for adults, and each person would receive a fun little fidget puzzle to keep at their desk! Oh! Now I'm thinking of other ways to share the fun .... gift to a nursing or youth home for residents to share a little joy, a classroom countdown, babysitters or latch-key programs, boutique/spa gift to the customer of the day ... opportunity to spread holiday joy is endless!
