Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Jasper, a long-eared rabbit, is worried about Valentine’s Day. He can’t seem to find the right gift for his wife. The search leads him to see if he can pick up ideas from the other residents of the valley. The porcupine family tries teaching him to knit a scarf like they’re making for Mother, but Jasper is a butterfingers. Miriam is giving her husband chocolate-covered flies, but she’s a frog. Teagan the fox wants to make Jasper part of a present to his wife: rabbit stew. After his escape, Jasper tells a cardinal that he fears he’ll never find a present, but the bird shows him how he’s already provided one. The big payoff—as he walked to various houses, Jasper’s footsteps have outlined a heart—is diminished by the fact that it will be hard for young ones to actually make out the shape of the heart. That’s too bad, because the rest of the story is quite sweet, and punctuated with bits of humor and suspense. Petersen, the creator of the Mouse Guard comics, makes his picture-book debut here. Preschool-Grade 1. --Ilene Cooper

Traumatizing for no reason

Traumatizing for no reason
This book has the potential to be dear and warm. Instead, for no added benefit to the story, a creepy fox adds the poor rabbit to its stew and the panicked anxious rabbit dripping in sweat and soup is able to escape. However, the damage is done. Your child has to see the precious rabbit sitting in a big hot pot with a fox stirring him with open teeth. Kids don’t need this. The world is evil enough. Don’t buy this if you have a sensitive or empathetic child. It could give them intrusive thoughts and it’s not worth it.

This is a sweet story that would make a great Valentine’s gift for a partner or for a child.

Jasper Bunny’s search for a Valentine’s gift for his wife is really cute, and the ending is such a fun surprise. Some reviewers were bothered by the part where Teagan the fox tries to cook Jasper in his stew, but in my (btw vegetarian) opinion this is as innocent as The Three Little Pigs. The predator is thwarted in both; it’s a happy ending for the prey. The fox is not big and bad, just sneaky. The artwork is gorgeous and all of the characters are adorable. I also didn’t understand one reviewer’s criticism of what they thought was the moral. I think the moral is tried-and-true: material gifts are not as important as demonstrating one’s love through loving actions. I love this book!

Bought this as a Valentine's gift for my girlfriend. The story is adorable, with an excellent message, and the art style is one I've already come to adore from being a fan of the Mouse Guard series.

As a Valentine's gift, this was extremely successful to say the LEAST. There were giggles, blushes, and "Awwww..."s aplenty as she read. There may or may not have been a "shut up, I'm NOT crying! *sniffle*" as she finished reading. My doctor tells me the bone and joint damage is healing nicely from the hug she attacked me with after putting the book down.

There's just one problem: I can't use this as a gift again. I... I may have set a difficult bar to follow, here.

This is a lovely book that is written and illustrated by the same talented author of the Mouse Guard series. This is the simple story of a bunny looking to find a special gift for his Valentine, and in his journey of discovery, finds that the simplest way to show I love you is the best. It has a visual surprise at the end that will delight your young ones, and I believe this book can become the nighttime favorite.

I enjoy Mouse Guard, but I am glad to see that this book is what it appears to be, a sweet little story about a bunny wanting to find a present for his girl. There's a scary moment (what were you thinking Jasper!), and delightful artistry throughout.

There is a creepy page with a fox that tries to eat the rabbit. I almost didnt let my son read it, but I felt a little to much of a helicopter parent. He loves the book and I try and make that scene less scary. Other than that wonderful story line and great illustrations.

This book was so cute! I love David Petersen's Mouse Guard series and I found this while I was looking those up. I decided to get it for my mom for Valentine's Day and it was not a disappointment! She loved it, I loved it, and it was reminiscent of the book "Guess How Much I Love You" that I loved as a little kid and made her read to me every night. I'm happy with this purchase and would recommend to anyone!

I purchased this book for telling to--not reading to-- a first grade elementary class and the 6 and 7 yr olds were enchanted. In telling, of course, I'm free to add elements as I see fit and for first graders this was necessary, but, if I was telling to kindergarten children, I would tell it just as the author wrote it. The message is a sweet one for any age child -- or adult, as well!

Got this as part of a valentine to my Wife this year as it was our first Valentine's Day married and she loved the Mouse Guard books I had given her before. (She's an artist and also loves the small furry animals) The ending to this book is very sweet and I think she likes it more than the Mouse Guard series. Really great read, and art. :)

Perfect gift for that gift giver who can't quite get it right. My partner tries so hard and just kind of misses the mark. I don't mind because it's the thought but it did bother me how bummed out she'd get. This book was the perfect Valentine for her to let her know that I see her efforts. It's beautifully illustrated and just lovely. Highly recommend.

This is a book that is aimed at children by the looks of it, but can be easily enjoyed by adults because the illustrations are mature. It is a story book, not a comic book. The full page illustrations are gorgeous, and accompanied with a simple English narration. In the story, a bunny called Jasper searches for a Valentine's Day gift for his partner. It takes a typical format, where he asks various creatures for their help, but the near death experience and an unexpected twist at the end are what make it memorable.

For children, a perfect book. No bad language or graphic images. Adults will love it provided that they are fans of David Petersen's illustration style, or lovers of illustration in general. I think adults might read it once and then only pick it up again to look at the stunning artwork, but I'm fine with that. I purchased this because I am a huge fan of David Petersen's work, and this did not disappoint.

The product description doesn't seem to be accurate. It states 32 pages, but I've flicked through mine and I count 28, only 24 of which contain full page illustrations as part of the main story. I can only assume they count the front and back covers as pages. It is hardcover, and like the "Mouseguard" books by the same author, are a non standard size, square shaped and roughly 24cm on all sides.

A visual treat for all ages, just be careful of price. I paid just under eight pounds for mine, brand new. It was definitely worth that. ;)
