Fabulous family story-destiny

Fabulous family story-destiny
This is a amazing story with fascinating life lessons that are shown and illustrated in vividly colored drawings. It begins with a family's relocation from Tennessee to Detroit. It the takes a miraculous twist at the end that only can be looked upon as destiny. You will gasp and hold your hand to your heart 💗at the end. This story is true as told to the author in sermons year's apart by different people. Arriving in Detroit Michigan Jonathan Jefferson Weeks and his sister Beth have just seen the New Baptist Detroit church where their dad will be the new Pastor. The church is rickety, practically falling down. The kid's asked dad why did we come here to this awful place? Mom explains the Deacons sent dad here because this wee church needs 'new life'. Unpacking old photo albums mom explains thru photos how Dad made our Memphis church beautiful. It was as bad as this is when we got there. (darling illustrations of them sitting together looking thru the albums as kitty and little Beth look on) The entire Summer was spent clearing trash, cutting back bushes, mowing even planting bulbs for blooming in Spring. Inside scrubbing floors and walls then painting, had Beth and Jonathan too busy to miss friends. School began then they made new friends. As Fall came as thing's looked much better, Sunday services brought more people. Crowded friendly folks anxious to help even new school mates came to help. Winter came as it's almost finished, Dad was right at the difference. In December Reverend Week's painted the last wall, the sacristy it's going to have an artist paint a fabulously special scene on it. Jonathan heard news of a coming blizzard in Michigan with bad snowfalls ⛄The parsonage is warm and cozy we should be fine explained dad. Day's later the worst snow in 25 years fell on Detroit. Mr Brown the caretaker called for Rev Weeks to hurry over to the church, Dad & the children ran thru the parsonage next door to the church. Each let out a gasp as they saw a huge sploch on the sacristy wall right where the painting will be. Build up of ice on the roof with water now coming in plus the artist is due tomorrow. Dad lightly touched the wall then a huge crack appeared with a rush of water, then a thud as a hunk of plaster fell causing a huge hole. Mr Brown said he knows a good plasterer Mr Zukor who can fix it. "Can it be fixed by Christmas Eve🎄?" asked dad. Mr Brown told him 'in no way can it be done it has to dry out 1st, then it gets plaster -but not till spring. The son questions his father about his overall belief that 'God always has a plan'. Looking at all the hard work, now a blizzard, the young boy doesn't get it😮 We Don't always understand the world around us- it unfolds as it should. Tomorrow will be another day, maybe it won't be so bleak. The next day was Cold & freezing, Mom pointed out she needed decorations picked up in Detroit. Jonathan didn't even see the point of decorating, because he was so upset. To top it off the car battery was dead so they took the bus. Dad & Jonathan got mom's decorations, then a shop window caught Jonathan's attention so they went in. A most magnificent piece of cloth was what he saw. If it's big enough perhaps it could hang over the hole in the wall, dad agreed it was amazing. Hand stitched embroidery with incredible details. The shop woman spread it out for them, saying she's had it over a year. It would fit nicely, unfortunately dad only had $15.00 plus change for the bus home. She said for Pastor it's a deal for that price💗 They were waiting for the bus, they were freezing & cold plus the bus was late. An old woman sitting nearby on the bench waiting yelled over that the bus is always late, if cold they can come over to her she has a thermos of hot tea and raisin cookies. Jonathan was grateful. Sharing this they found out she has 3 bus transfers to get home. To repay her dad wants her to come with them, he'll drop off his package and take her home. (Delightfully charming illustrations of them bundled up waiting for bus as beautiful snow falls from sky, old woman sits on bench). At home Rachel, the old woman, goes in the parsonage as they hang the Tapestry. **** The rest of the story is not to be missed... How the Lord can use over looked, used thing's to remind us of him in our lives. Jonathan will see 'why' they were brought to this place. Hopefully you can look back in your life and see the journey you were led thru difficult times into amazing💗

I bought this to add to our family's advent reading collection. It is one of my favorites now! It is a richly woven tale of generosity, providence and endurance. The plot is very engaging and the illustrations are heartwarming. I would definitely recommend it for ages 8 and up as it is a little long. It will lead to discussions of the holocaust and WW2. I won't give more details or I will spoil the plot. I think it is good for parents to know the subject matter so they can teach their children about that time in history. Thank you Patricia Polacco for another classic!

We've had the book--sheet music--for years and these songs have been a Christmas staple in our home. Then...kids grow up, get married, and move away, and me, not a piano player, is stuck, missing the music I love so much at Christmas time.

This CD is pretty good. I do get to hear the songs, but they are a bit ... zippier ... than I'm used to. My girls all competed in piano competitions and I've always preferred the mellow, normal playing over the competition style playing. It's like showing off how fast you can move your fingers takes precedence over listening pleasure. In competition, I can see that, but for listening, I'd rather it sound like real music.

It's okay, but I will forever prefer the way my daughters played this at home.

This is a lusciously drawn picture book which would be ideal for upper primary. It is based on a story told as true, but possibly apocryphal) of a Jewish couple who were separated by the Holocaust and brought back together via a tapestry. True or not, the tale of family love and respect between religions is heartwarming and would provoke much positive discussion in a home or school setting. Patricia Polacco does not seem well-known in the UK but has produced a wide range of touching titles for the US market - worth getting to know.
