About the author

Born Patricia Ann Barber in Lansing, Michigan, to parents of Russian and Ukrainian descent on one side and Irish on the other, Patricia Polacco grew up in both California and Michigan. Her school year was spent in Oakland, California, and summers in her beloved Michigan. She describes her family members as marvelous storytellers. "My fondest memories are of sitting around a stove or open fire, eating apples and popping corn while listening to the old ones tell glorious stories about their homeland and the past. We are tenacious traditionalists and sentimentalists.... With each retelling our stories gain a little more Umph!"Studying in the United States and Australia, Patricia Polacco has earned an M.F.A. and a Ph. D. in art history, specializing in Russian and Greek painting, and iconographic history. She is a museum consultant on the restoration of icons. As a participant in many citizen exchange programs for writers and illustrators, Patricia Polacco has traveled extensively in Russia as well as other former Soviet republics. She continues to support programs that encourage Russo-American friendships and understanding. She is also deeply involved in inner-city projects here in the U.S. that promote the peaceful resolution of conflict and encourage art and literacy programs. The mother of a grown son and a daughter, Patricia Polacco currently resides in Michigan, where she has a glorious old farm that was built during the time of Lincoln.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 26, 2024I ordered this book as my new Christmas book to read to my grandchildren when they visit and could not be more pleased with my selection! The story is beautiful and takes a turn that you won't expect. I love how the author weaves so many threads to create a beautiful story of endurance, history, love and providence. I can't wait to read it to my grandchildren!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 25, 2024I bought this to add to our family's advent reading collection. It is one of my favorites now! It is a richly woven tale of generosity, providence and endurance. The plot is very engaging and the illustrations are heartwarming. I would definitely recommend it for ages 8 and up as it is a little long. It will lead to discussions of the holocaust and WW2. I won't give more details or I will spoil the plot. I think it is good for parents to know the subject matter so they can teach their children about that time in history. Thank you Patricia Polacco for another classic!

- Reviewed in the United States on December 27, 2023I’m a big fan of Patricia Pollaco’s books and this one definitely did not disappoint! As I read it aloud to my students they were captivated! What a wonderful story of cultures colliding in love and respect.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 17, 2016We've had the book--sheet music--for years and these songs have been a Christmas staple in our home. Then...kids grow up, get married, and move away, and me, not a piano player, is stuck, missing the music I love so much at Christmas time.
This CD is pretty good. I do get to hear the songs, but they are a bit ... zippier ... than I'm used to. My girls all competed in piano competitions and I've always preferred the mellow, normal playing over the competition style playing. It's like showing off how fast you can move your fingers takes precedence over listening pleasure. In competition, I can see that, but for listening, I'd rather it sound like real music.
It's okay, but I will forever prefer the way my daughters played this at home.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 19, 2024I absolutely love this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Heart-warming picture book for older children
This is a lusciously drawn picture book which would be ideal for upper primary. It is based on a story told as true, but possibly apocryphal) of a Jewish couple who were separated by the Holocaust and brought back together via a tapestry. True or not, the tale of family love and respect between religions is heartwarming and would provoke much positive discussion in a home or school setting. Patricia Polacco does not seem well-known in the UK but has produced a wide range of touching titles for the US market - worth getting to know.

5.0 out of 5 stars Christmas Tapestry
This book has a history and the same time helps for the young boy to understand that things which at the moment seems to be negative can bloom the most beautiful thing out of it.
