I can see how people that buy those overly large bagels would not like this slicer as those may be too wide and thick to use in this (mind you, this handles a good sized store bought bagel 4.5" wide x almost 2" thick, just not this humongous bagels) but since I make my own, by making the dough in my bread maker, I know the approximate width and thickness to adjust to when forming so I have no issue. This really makes bagel slicing super easy, AND SAFE, so safe that I purchased another for my daughter's home since they eat bagels often. She is also happy with her slicer.
I don't clean this throughly after each use because it really doesn't get dirty, and quick spray with the sink hose is all it needs for the most part but I use a bottle brush to scrub the blade part when needed.
If you are a bagel eater and buy unsliced bagels or make your own you should consider this slicer. The ease of use and safety it offers makes it a must have slicer. I've used others that sit the bagel securely for you and you still slice it with a knife but those can be awakeward and still can pose a safety hazard.
The material this is make of is a heavyweight plastic and metal blade. I expect to have this for many years.

Mom of seven - can't tell you how many times I have driven someone to get stitches after they had a bagel cutting accident. I just started making Sourdough Bagels at home and I don't know if I will ever buy a grocery store bagel again. That said I needed a safety device to prevent another accident. My ad showed the brand as Hoan but my packaging is Bagel Biter. I did not want an inferior product so I researched the barcode numbers on the bottom of the package. I was relieved to see that it is the same number just different branding. Very easy and safe to use. In reading other reviews I make a starting cut on a oven warm fresh bagel to assist this unit in not squashing the hot fragrant want to eat it now pieceof bread. Not a flawed product, just a best practice if they aren't room temperature. In fact they are 425 degrees out of the oven and I cool under a fan for a couple of minutes. Should have bought this 20 years ago. Far superior and easier to use the the wooden slotted units we gave away. Pays for itself!

Ok so the good bits first. If you want to quickly and easily slice your bagels in half because they don't come pre-sliced, this is the gadget for you. It lets you do exactly that, though not always perfectly, but well enough nonetheless without being wildly off-center. Now for the minuses, it's annoying to clean, especially if your bagel has sticky toppings on it like garlic and onions, and unless plain bagels are your thing, you will have to clean it after every use. Second, if you demand a perfectly centered cut, you might need to spend a lot of time centering your bagel perfectly before slicing, which can be arduous because this is very much a one-size-fits-all type gadget and will slice imperfectly, though mostly centered. Third, you need to set this on top of a cutting board or something similar or it'll leak bagel toppings and crumbs out of the bottom all over your table or countertop. Overall, am I glad we bought it? Yes. Do we use it? Yes, roughly as often as we have bagels. But this is a very specific device that services a singular function so you should already know if you need one or not.

I don't recommend the other bagel slicers, I bought one of the cheaper ones and the blade was like a saw
blade and did not slice the bagel nicely. This Hoan Original has a blade with serrated edge and cuts the
bagels much better than the other slicer I tried. In my view, it's all about the blade as the other slicers
have nearly identical construction to the Hoan. The Hoan is worth the extra couple of bucks for the
blade alone.
