Great story with so much to enjoy. The illustrations are masterfully done and the words rhythmic and inviting. Some of the words are challenging for prek and kinder students, but that's one reason I love it. It's a complex text and doesn't 'dumb down' it's message for young children. A beautiful story of a young boys excitement about his first day of kindergarten and the connections/encouragement he receives from family, teacher, and new friends! Hopeful. Delightful read.

Got this for my 5-year-old son who’s entering kindergarten. Since it was highly recommended to me by an expert in early childhood education, I was a little disappointed that so many of the pages had inaccessible “royal” language and references (like a reference to Osh Kosh B’gosh) that I have to stop and explain to my son. I would have preferred a story we could just read together. The boy in the book also gets to bring 2 pudding cups to school and takes naps, which my son’s school doesn’t do. Despite this, my son still enjoys reading it and the whole idea of being the king of kindergarten. It’s also wonderfully illustrated.
