Phillip and his mother were to board a ship to avoid conflict in their country, this was a passenger ship and although German U Boats were around it was considered safe, they soon find out it is not as the ship is torpedoed, the next thing Phillip knows he awakes on a raft with a large negro, Phillip was brought up to see the negroes as an inferior race and does not trust the man
After the long time with many dangers they find Phillip 11yrs had gone blind Phillip after being hit by some wood in the head, Phillip learned to admire and respect Timothy his saviour
