A BuzzFeed Best Summer Read of 2021

When a fake relationship between scientists meets the irresistible force of attraction, it throws one woman's carefully calculated theories on love into chaos.

As a third-year Ph.D. candidate, Olive Smith doesn't believe in lasting romantic relationships—but her best friend does, and that's what got her into this situation. Convincing Anh that Olive is dating and well on her way to a happily ever after was always going to take more than hand-wavy Jedi mind tricks: Scientists require proof. So, like any self-respecting biologist, Olive panics and kisses the first man she sees.

That man is none other than Adam Carlsen, a young hotshot professor—and well-known ass. Which is why Olive is positively floored when Stanford's reigning lab tyrant agrees to keep her charade a secret and be her fake boyfriend. But when a big science conference goes haywire, putting Olive's career on the Bunsen burner, Adam surprises her again with his unyielding support and even more unyielding...six-pack abs.

Suddenly their little experiment feels dangerously close to combustion. And Olive discovers that the only thing more complicated than a hypothesis on love is putting her own heart under the microscope.

The Love Hypothesis Review
From Lala’s Book ReviewsTW/CW: sexual harassment, cancer, absent parents while growing up, foster homeLook, if you’re even slightly thinking about getting this book to read, just go a head and do it because you defiantly won’t regret it, and if you have the book and thinking about reading it, just go a head and put down your current read and start this one. Because, a) it’s a super fast read, b) it’s highly addicting, and c) Adam and Olive’s relationship/banter is the best.Yes, I bought this book because of all of the hype that has been going around on bookstagram and booktok as partly because of the cover because it’s just the cutest. The Love Hypothesis has a very simple style of writing to it, and I’m not saying that in a negative way. The simplicity of the writing makes this slow flow in a steady way without any of those moments of wanting to skip entire pages or chapters to look for the story to pick up. I feel like sometimes when the writing is very over-the-top it’s a way of trying to compensate for the book lacking in some area from world building or character development, and the content of The Love Hypothesis is honestly one of the best books I’ve read this year and doesn’t need all of the glitz and glam that some books exudes. I think it also helps reflect the way that STEM fields see their work in a very black or white way even though getting to those points are anything but simple. From the very beginning of the book, I was pretty much hooked and by the time I got to like chapter 2 or 3, I knew that there was no way that I wasn’t going to finish this book. I literally had to make myself put this book down at times so I could be productive instead of binge reading. The Love Hypothesis honestly made me laugh so many times because Olive is one of the very few people who is able to bring about some emotion other than the typically broodiness from Adam, and his reactions and her actions are just hilarious.Olive found herself fake dating Adam in attempt to get her best friend Anh to see that Olive is over her ex Jeremy, so they can start dating because Anh wouldn’t make a move because of the bestie code, and Adam happened to be at the right place at the right time when Anh was walking through the building when Olive grabbed Adam kissed him very unexpectedly. One thing leads to another and *bam* they’re faking dating to not only prove that Olive has moved on but to also help Adam with the college. It’s like painstakingly awkward at first because Adam has a very real reputation on campus and the science field of being a very strict instructor who kind of has a habit of making students cry and drop out because of his not so nice constructive criticism, and even though Adam is very nice on the eyes and has a personality under his tough science exterior, it’s still very shocking to say the least.Their fake relationship progresses pretty well and they become actual friends in the process, and Olive has found someone to collab with her on her project, and that person just so happens to be one of Adam’s friends.Just as the date come for them to break-up, a lot of things happen with their relationship and something huge happens to Olive that makes her have to act quickly even when she doesn’t want to.Despite Olive being a relatively quiet, awkward person, she’s always able to put Adam in his place when his tough academic side is showing. She’s a hardworking student, a caring best friend, and committed to everything she sets her mind to doing.Adam is just *swoon*. He is in a very committed relationship with his job and takes it very seriously. He is this very straightforward person who doesn’t hold back except when it comes to his feelings with Olive. It’s very obvious that he cares for Olive because even though he puts up a “fight” towards some things he gives in and wants nothing more than to she her happy, and it’s just the cutest to see this man become so love-struck.

Alright you guys... Buckle up because this review is going to literally just be a random conglomeration of thoughts I typed out while reading this incredible book.

First off... when I tell you I was giggling like a madwoman, screaming into an empty house laughing and also crying (both sad and happy tears)??? NO. JOKE.

I LOVED the STEM in this book. As a science major (technically exercise science, but still close enough to where I took classes well into the science field), this was brilliant and so insanely fun to read! This setting was awesome because it was a school setting, however the ages were older than fresh into college. It was brilliant!

When I tell you this book had all the best tropes in one... oh my god. Seriously!!!!! Grumpy hero, sunshine heroine, fake dating, slow burn... plus MORE??? Yes. I did say there's more! Isn't it wonderful??

Before I go into more depth of my love for the main characters, I have to say the friendships and side characters in this book were amazing! I loved the combined group of friends from both Olive and Adam. They were so endearing and lovable and I can't wait for books about them (because there was definitely the hinted possibility for some of these characters to have their own books... I will do anything for more books of these characters by this author!!!)!

Alrighty. Now onto some of my favorite characters: Olive and Adam. Like don't even get me started on this being a reconstructed Reylo story, because my heart legit sings for that!!! You can totally see the inspiration in these characters and it's incredible!

Olive: this girl was just downright awesome. I would adore being her friend. And she is not only an incredible girl, but an outstanding friend. She is so selfless. The lengths that she goes through to make sure her best friend is happy is so heartwarming and you just can't help but fall in love with her heart because it is just pure and sweet.

Adam. Freaking. Carlsen. That's it. He's perfect. The perfect broody man. PERFECT. PERFECT. PERFECT.

Here's a glimpse into my brain during a scene:

Adam... muscles... lotttttts of muscles... moving a truck with a dead battery... the sweat... What I wouldn't give to have Adam Carlsen call me a smarts with a small grin or smirk... To answer that question, I would give literally anything.
Can you tell this broke my brain?

The way that Adam cared for Olive (in all ways... wink wink) was absolutely beautiful. He learned her so well and was able to be the support and love she hadn't had in so long. And it broke my heart just as much as it halted it because my goodness... it was the sweetest thing to see him being everything he possibly could be for her. And only her.

Alright, as you can tell, I easily became absolutely obsessed with this book. I have been looking forward to it ever since I first heard about it (before it became popular on the social media platforms, yes I'm very proud of that thank you very much) and it absolutely lived up to and absolutely exceed and obliterated all expectations I had. This book has engrained itself in my brain and my heart and is an all time favorite that I will be sure to force people to read for the rest of my life because it is sheer perfection.

I think I put off reading this for so long because all the hype scared me. But let me tell you, it totally SURPASSES the hype!

First, we need more books with women in STEM. And we need to see their struggles because they're real and everyone deserves to be seen in fiction. Ali's accurate portrayal of Olive's and Anh's experiences will help shed light and break down barriers. I didn't need to understand the science to completely love that aspect.

On that note, this book flirts beautifully with a broad commercial audience and a very niche one. Well done!

Second, this is told solely from Olive's POV and that was a brilliant choice. The voice is so unique and specific and very Olive that I almost forgot it was written in the third person. It's charming and quirky and enhances the story.

Does that mean Adam comes off a little hard to read or understand? Absolutely. But watching Olive tease out details, learning about him alongside her, is part of the joy of this story. And because we don't have the same blind spots Olive has, we can see how much he cares for her WAY before she does. Being with her as she finally figures it out was delightful.

Third, and this is my favorite part, the demisexual representation is incredible and so very necessary. While it exists in Olive's coding and isn't ever said, it's rare to find it done so well. And Ali is masterful at it! It makes sense that Olive would repeat certain things (like Adam's size or how hot he is) -- she's never experienced this kind of interest or attraction before and she's learning about it.

The secondary characters are great -- I want a Malcolm in my life -- and the pacing is lovely. I thoroughly enjoyed it and will recommend it to everyone!

4.0 out of 5 stars Heart Warming and Humourous!
Reviewed in India on January 31, 2022
I think The Love Hypothesis by Ali Hazelwood highlights everything that a lot of us have come to love in romance.

The most attractive aspect of romance for me is the quiet moments that you can have with someone. Not just when you can be quiet with them and they with you, but the soft words you can exchange with them. Your darkest moments and deepest fears, spoken softly only for their ears.

A friendship that runs deep and a familiarity that’s both surprising and not. The Love Hypothesis brings all this to the reader and more. It delivers interpersonal relationships, friendships, day to day struggles and the strength to overcome them.

I’m usually not so fond of the fake-dating trope, simply because you can generally guess the direction everything heads in and know the typical stops the author will pull. However, I think my favourite part of the book is fake-dating tropes being mentioned in the book itself as a trope and all of them rolling their eyes about the rom-com happening in the life of the heroine (including the heroine). Ali Hazelwood calling out her own trope was a certainly fresh take on it and altered how it felt a reading about it. That being said, the relationship between the H and h mostly felt like a deep friendship with long held affection for one another. They slipped into that space rather naturally and it was like a warm cup of something held between my palms on a cold day.

The side characters were all what gave the book so much authenticity. Sure, they added to the humour and angst between the characters, but they also provided a sense of home and love for one another. They were the protagonists’ found family but that was not their only role. They had struggles of their own and personalities outside of being a supporting character. So much so that a spin off series on them wouldn’t be out of place at all.

The miscommunication trope is not my favourite and I didn’t enjoy it too much in this book either but it didn’t get dragged out and drive us mental for the most part which I’m thankful for. Also it created a lot of anticipation in the readers, waiting for the moment the miscommunication would clear.

Another very important an interesting aspect was handled in this book as well. Something that involved the heroine take a big and brave step. Just like the miscommunication trope, this part of the book created a lot of tension and makes the reader eager to see the resolution. However in both cases the chance to actually see the resolution properly felt robbed. We see the step being taken, but not the reactions as such? In the sense, after the step is taken, the next chapter starts sometime later, thus we only hear about what happened rather than see it. After having waited so long, I guess I felt a little disappointed.

However, The Love Hypothesis is a warm warm read. I highly recommend. Expect some tears, lots of laughter, feels and love.

    Four and a half stars!

5.0 out of 5 stars One of my fave books of 2021—giggle inducing banter, loveable characters, and a swoontastic romance!

I wasn't planning on reading this book through the night and being a zombie in the morning but y'know what? Olive and Adam are more than worth the dark circles and red eyes! I'm ngl, I went into this feeling more than a little nervous cos the hype is absolutely wild around it, but I'm beyond chuffed to say that it was *chefs kiss* and definitely lived up to all the hype! The academic setting, the endearingly awkward moments, the witty and cheeky banter, the CHEMISTRY! And bedroom Dr. Adam Carlsen? HELLO! It was unexpected (not sure why cos the man is fine) and it was hot AF. So wow (so wow)! 🥵 Like, I don't know if I can even form coherent and non-rambly sentences for this review because I loved it so much? I'm gonna try though but also who am I kidding? This is going to be rambly and gushing and probably a mess but I hope it convinces you to read the book! 😂

You know when you start a new book and almost immediately know, within the first few pages, that you're going to love it? That was this book for me! Hazelwood's writing is so easy to read and full of quirky and humorous moments that made it so difficult to put this book down. I was surprised to find that I also really enjoyed the academic setting and I liked that it wasn't just a 'background' aspect to the story but an integral part of it. Although I'm not familiar with the academic world myself, I could tell that Hazelwood was and that came through clearly in the writing and it was immersive. It's a cutthroat world and the misogyny is rampant, as evidenced by Olive's and Ahn's experiences, and I appreciated that Hazelwood doesn't shy away from the harsh reality of what it's like to be in academia in general but specifically to be a woman in academia, in S.T.E.M.

While the setting was great, it was the characters that won me over and I adored every single one of them. This book had such a fantastic cast of characters and I loved that the side characters felt well fleshed out too! I was immediately charmed by Olive's slightly chaotic and anxious but entirely adorable nerdy energy. She's wickedly smart and super passionate about her research into pancreatic cancer, but she's also witty and absolutely hilarious! She's a literal ray of sunshine and I loved being in her head so much that it was so easy to root for her success and happiness. I adored her friendships with Ahn and Malcolm, her ride or dies, and their friendly banter had me constantly laughing out loud (so much so that my sister asked me what I was reading that was so hilarious)! They were such a great group of friends and I loved seeing them achieve their dreams and finding their happiness alongside Olive. Now let's talk about the grumpy star of the show, Olive's long-time secret-admirer and everyone's favourite nightmare: Dr. Adam Carlsen. He's an absolute genius who takes his responsibilities as a science mentor very seriously and cares about his students and their success despite maybe not vocalising that in ways that people prefer. Underneath his gruff and intimidating exterior, he's loyal, so freaking cheeky and a total sweetheart, especially when it comes to Olive. I can't even describe the way my heart swooned at all the ways he was a simp for her but I am grinning big just thinking about it right now! Also, listen. I'm a big fan of hugely nerdy men that are hulkingly built (the contrast tho) and what can I say? This man was everything! And I mean, I already mentioned how knee-quakingly hot Adam is when he's unleashed in the bedroom so... I mean, I guess I'm just a fool for this man. 🙃

Although their fake dating kicked off pretty early in the story, the progression of their romance from strangers who tolerate each other on weekly fake dates to tentative yet adorable friends to swoontastic lovers was immaculately done! Watching them slip into easy, comforting, and totally cheeky banter the more they spent time together made me ridiculously happy. There's no doubt that Hazelwood does the slow-burn build-up extremely well and the more they got to know each other and found themselves in relationship-esque situations that had me squealing and giggling with utter delight, the more invested I became in their relationship. I mean, there was hand-holding, lap-sitting, sunscreen applying on naked backs!!! And I. Pls. I swoon. I cannot. I loved it so much and it's rare that I immediately want to go back and read the swoony bits the minute I finish a romance, but I immediately want to go back and read the swoony bits in this book already! 😂

I honestly don't know what else to say about this book other than to keep gushing about how swoony the romance was and how happy their interactions made me. I'm so glad that I finally shook off the nerves and dove into this because it was amazing. The only regret I have is that it's over and I already can't wait to read it again at some point because this has fast become one of my favourite romances—and definitely one of my top reads in 2021! All I can say is READ IT! Also, I thought I'd share some content warnings below because there are some topics and events that may be triggering for readers, so please read with care ❤️
