I Guess I Haven't Learned That Yet: Discovering New Ways of Living When the Old Ways Stop Working
Audible Audiobook
– Unabridged
Read by the author with an audio-exclusive interview of Shauna about her family's move to New York.
When everything we've been clinging to falls apart, how do we know what to keep and what to let go of? I Guess I Haven't Learned That Yet, now a New York Times bestseller, is a clear-eyed look at where we go from here—and how we can transform our lives along the way.
Just after her fortieth birthday, author Shauna Niequist found herself in a season of chaos, change, and loss unlike anything she'd ever faced. She discovered that many of the beliefs and practices that she usually turned to were no longer serving her.
After trying—and failing—to pull herself back up using the same old strategies and systems, she realized she required new ones: courage, curiosity, and compassion. She discovered the way through was more about questions than answers, more about forgiveness than force, more about tenderness than trying hard.
In I Guess I Haven't Learned That Yet, Niequist chronicles her journey—from her life-changing move from the Midwest to Manhattan to the power of unlearning what is no longer helpful and accepting the unknowns that come with midlife, heartbreak, and chronic pain.
With her characteristic candor and grace, Niequist writes about her experience learning how to:
- Discover new ways of living when the old ways stop working
- Embrace the challenges and delights of releasing our expectations for how we thought our lives would look
- Trust God's goodness in a deeper, more profound way
Follow Niequist as she endeavors to understand grief, to reshape her faith, and to practice courage when it feels impossible.
Praise for I Guess I Haven't Learned That Yet:
"Gentle. Loving. This tender book asks us to listen to our pain, lean into our discomfort, and trust that we can be lifted back on our feet by God and each other."
--Kate C. Bowler, New York Times bestselling author of No Cure for Being Human
"This book is a masterpiece. It is a journey and an invitation and a joy and a heartbreak and all the things you need to read to be reminded that hope can still be found."
--Annie F. Downs, New York Times bestselling author of That Sounds Fun

Perfect life lessons following a pandemic

- Reviewed in the United States on December 4, 2022There are times when a book reaches right through the chaotic mess of this world we live in and speaks directly to your soul. I Guess I Haven’t Learned That Yet by Shauna Niequist did exactly that for me. I’m not typically a huge fan of non-fiction as I prefer to get lost in fantastical worlds in my free time; however, the moment I picked up this book I simply couldn’t put it down!
Filled with stories about what it looks like when your world has been tossed upside down and yet you still have to get up every morning and move forward, this book was such an encouragement that it’s okay to not get everything right all the time. As the title suggests, we are all still learning; and sometimes that learning is painful and no fun.
I appreciated the author’s transparency and honesty as she discussed everything from struggles with infertility to dealing with the pandemic in the wake of a cross country move to quieter moments of joy and happiness that reminded her God was still working and moving. I think that this book is filled with reminders for many different seasons in life, but in particular it speaks to the moment that I think every adult is confronted with: the moment when you realize the way you’ve always done things won’t work anymore. So now what? With the gentle kindness of a good friend, Niequist brings you alongside her journey and offers sound advice to help you on your own path.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who is or has moved through great changes and finds themself asking that inevitable question: now what?
- Reviewed in the United States on May 4, 2022I am thankful for this book.
Funny story. I bought the Kindle version so that I could read it on my Paperwhite on vacation.
On vacation, the beach was way too bright for me to read easily or well, so I bought the audio version. There is nothing like Shauna's voice reading her own words. I loved every moment of listening. Also, the audio book has a fun extra bonus at the end that made it totally worth it. I loved her recommendations of places in New York.
Once I was done with the audio book, I promptly bought the actual book. lol I decided it was one that I HAD to have on my bookshelf. I want to mark it up and refer back to it often. So I now have three versions of this book and happily paid for every one. lol
I loved Shauna's thoughts and perspectives on walking through hard and painful changes. I loved her thoughts on parenting herself. I loved the way she adjusted to carrying a sheet pan downstairs to hang out with friends when her charcuterie board wasn't an option.
I am walking through an incredibly hard season of grief and loss and have been for the last 2 1/2 years, and Shauna's words were so comforting to me. The wisdom of her words and the way she spoke them were like a balm to my soul. I am incredibly grateful that she wrote this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 14, 2022How do I describe this book? The format is unique. It's a collection of essays. A memoir? This is the first time I have felt compelled to write an Amazon review! Shauna Niequist is part author, part artist. Her writing is captivating--she writes with such beauty and precision that she can transport you immediately to the place she is describing. Each essay stands alone, bringing her wisdom and insight to the places she has been--often difficult places--on life's journey during the past three years as she and her family moved from the midwest to New York City. She is honest and transparent about the lessons she has learned, the grace she has given herself to learn them, and the fact that there is always more to learn. I have highlighted so many nuggets of wisdom in this book. Shauna is a Christian and her belief in Jesus informs her writing, but anyone, regardless of faith tradition, would benefit from her writing.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 18, 2022Shauna’s books are always a little like a comfort book for me. I can read them quick and easily, but they always contain beautiful stories of community and food and wisdom of her life lived. This is not my favorite of her book but still well worth the read.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 25, 2025This book touches on so many deep parts of my soul exactly where I am at right now having dealt with deep loss, questions about prayer and faith while still working at a church and deeply loving Jesus as The Rock under my life. Shauna makes me feel seen and gives me steps to take forward in figuring out and living inside this complex difficult life where there is also so much beauty and joy to be found. Thanks to Shauna for speaking into the deepest parts of my soul and showing me ways to tiptoe toward the light. I read this book in one day the 1st time, read it on a weekend get-away the 2nd time and am now journaling through it a 3rd time.

4.0 out of 5 stars "Oh Well" isn't in Shauna's make up!
Includes some mild spoilers
I have really enjoyed Shauna's other books and returned to re-read them. As an atheist and UK-based some of the religion elements don't chime with me, but I like her thoughtfulness and honesty, and sheer readability. This book....this book....
...So we are all probably aware of the crashing down of Shauna's world following her father's disgrace and removal from the church he founded in Willow Creek. To most UK readers, a church with regular Sunday attendance of 18,000 people at worship is beyond our experience, so we can only imagine the effect on Shauna and her family of the impact of this, and she refers to it obliquely in an early chapter. However, this was in 2018 I think, and essentially, to cut a long story short, Shauna isn't over it. Add in early menopause and moving to NYC to pursue Aaron's career, she has been through a lot. This book feels sadder and less hopeful than her earlier work, and to a UK reader, maybe a bit self-indulgent. Perhaps I am judging her harshly, but parents' marriages do break down in later life, life isn't always perfect but Shauna seems to show little awareness or empathy with her own family; Aaron and her sons, it is all about her and how difficult her life has been. And yet Shauna is happily married, solvent, writes for a living (her chosen profession) has two lovely, healthy sons, family and friends around her - for this reader, there were times when I wanted to tell her to get a grip. It feels like one big wail of 'It's not fair!'. She talks a lot about getting older but she's only 44. She talks about a smaller life, but she's living in New York. Some of this work was written in the lockdown and pandemic, and we've all been through it and know how tough it's been, but sometimes it feels like it is only her and the level of introspection is a bit much. Research suggests that the age of 44 is the lowest point in adults' lives. Let's hope it is all up from here for Shauna. I would have given it 3.5 stars but I'm hoping it will grow on me so I went for four. Worth a read definitely.
