Sisters First: Stories from Our Wild and Wonderful Life
Audible Audiobook
– Unabridged
Funny and poignant personal stories and reflections from former first daughters Jenna Bush Hager and Barbara Pierce Bush.
Born into a political dynasty, Jenna and Barbara Bush grew up in the public eye. As small children, they watched their grandfather become president; just 12 years later they stood by their father's side when he took the same oath. They spent their college years being trailed by the Secret Service and chased by the paparazzi, with every teenage mistake making national headlines. But the tabloids didn't tell the whole story of these two young women forging their own identities under extraordinary circumstances.
In this book, they take listeners on a revealing, thoughtful, and deeply personal tour behind the scenes of their lives, with never-before-told stories about their family, their adventures, their loves and losses, and the special sisterly bond that fulfills them.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 13, 2024Beautifully written by brilliant young women. Their stories reinforced everything I believed about their parents and Grandparents Bush. Both presidents led with their hearts and strong commitment to the American people and future of our country. As someone who usually votes Democrat, I assure you we were so right to support and respect the two Bush presidents. The authors give us a look into their private lives growing up in one of the most famous American families. Read the book twice!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 22, 2017I heard Jenna and Barbara Bush talk about their book at a local event before deciding to read it. I've liked Jenna when I've seen her on TV, and I enjoyed the sisters' interaction on stage, so I decided to read the book more as a curiosity than anything else. I think the stories they share are super sweet and demonstrate the love within their family (and between each other), so from that perspective, I thought it was actually a really interesting read. It's easy to forget that politicians and their families also have "normal" lives... this book shed a little bit of light on that aspect of the Bush family, which was not something that I expected to be the "hidden gem" when I started reading it. I have more respect for George H.W. and George W. as a result. What I didn't enjoy is that there was no obvious chronology to the book - one chapter we're in their early childhood, the next one we are in college, then we go back to some random time in childhood, etc. It was easy to read as the writing was very colloquial (Barbara's a bit more lyrical than Jenna's) but it was hard to follow since the stories jumped back and forth in time a lot.
I will also say that I got this book via a Kindle book sale, so I didn't pay full price... if I had paid the full retail price, my review might have been a bit less generous.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 3, 2017I was afraid this would be another “fluffy” book published simply because the authors’ names sell books, but that is NOT the case! I finished this in two sittings and enjoyed every moment. Both authors are incredible storytellers, and they really go in depth into their private “archives” and reveal a lot more than I would have expected. Barbara frankly discusses why she is not married, Jenna admits to several blunders and scolding by her grandmother - they are not sugarcoating their lives and trying to “look good.” In the process, the reader gets to see very real humans, which I deeply appreciate.
It was interesting to get an idea of their (very successful) family’s inter-generational dynamic. I was left with a sense of a very loving, supportive, and most importantly, hilarious family. I laughed out loud multiple times while reading this, and as a person whose main hobby is reading, I assure you this is a rare treat. I did love President Bush’s sense of humor, and his kids seem to be even more clever in this regard.
Most of all, I loved the concept of this book as a picture of a solid, loving, positive, enduring relationship - something we need to see more of in these days of online negativity. They certainly did warm my heart, and in the end I mailed this book to all three of my own sisters and my mom.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 27, 2017This is a revealing, often charming dual autobiography by the Bush twins -- Jenna, outgoing and fun; Barbara, serious and scholarly -- that recounts their lives from childhood to the present day, through the presidential administrations of their grandfather and father. The reader gets a good sense of what it's like to be part of such a public family -- and that wealth and privilege don't insulate people from sorrow and humiliation.
Each of the sisters has her own distinctive voice, and the focus of their mini-essays can be rather different. But their overriding affection for each other shines through. Twins are generally thought to be closer than other siblings, and that certainly seems to be true in this case, although their lives have taken different paths -- Jenna as a broadcaster, wife and mom of two; Jenna as a philanthropist who started her own foundation and often jets off to other countries in her work. There is some mention of politics -- mainly the campaigns of both men -- but not a lot of partisanship. It's a refreshing look at a famous family.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 31, 2017Hilarious, honest, and heart-warming -- this is the best book I have read in a long time. The girls come across as deeply humble and totally relatable, aware of the extraordinary circumstances of their lives and able to reflect on everything. The book is beautifully written -- truly -- and is so personal, reading it made me feel like I was sitting on a couch with them, dishing and reminiscing as old friends do. The power of their sisterly bond is palpable and inspired me to reflect on my own siblings -- how important they are to me and how we can do a better job celebrating our bond. This book would be a great gift to any sibling, child or parent. Well done Jenna and Barbara!!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 19, 2017I have grown to enjoy and respect Jenna Bush Hager through her work on Today and other NBC productions. I knew little about her sister Barbara but always wondered. A lifelong Democrat I never suspected what we had in common. This book gives us a peak into their family, history, growing up years and adult evolutions. It’s terrific! Great tidbits you would not have guessed lie within and enlightening stories about a family we thought we knew so well. I would love to meet these women for lunch or cocktails. I am a sister too but four sisters divided by four years each is not the same as twins. I am jealous of their closeness and hope in my next life to be half of a whole as they are. Enjoy this wonderful love letter.

The time spent reading this book has been not just nice and enjoyable but also full with thoughtfull bits. The book went well over my expectations and left me craving for more family stories and personal insights into the lives of two young ladies who were definitely born privileged but who have not been resting on laurels and have decided to give their lives a meaning. Well done girls!
