Editorial Reviews

Review

Praise for Rise of the Balloon Goons:"Cranking up the horrorlarity with googly eyed cartoon figures and sight gags on nearly every page, Cummings pitches his nervous but resourceful newcomer into a climactic, all-out battle with an entire army of aggressive, air-stealing bendy balloons." -- Kirkus ReviewsPraise for Day of the Night Crawlers:"Written for independent readers, the simple chapter books in this new series are part mystery, part fantasy, and part hilarious. The easy-to-read text, quick action, and exaggerated illustrations will appeal to both boys and girls." -- Language Arts

He has also illustrated books by other authors, including CARING FOR YOUR LION (by Tammi Sauer), LITTLE RED GLIDING HOOD (by Tara Lazar), MIGHTY TRUCK (by Chris Barton), and VROOM VROOM GARBAGE TRUCK (by Asia Citro).

His illustrations have appeared in newspapers, magazines, greeting cards, board games, jigsaw puzzles, a French opera, and on the back of a box of fish sticks.

My Daughter Loves These!
My 6 year old daughter reads and re-reads this book every day! She loves it!! The author came to speak to her class during their book fair last month and she’s been hooked on these books ever since. I’m getting more of these books for her for Christmas.

My son absolutely loved this series and read all the books over Christmas break. The next month was a friend’s birthday party, so we gave him this 3-in-1 book volume and the monster notebook as part of his gift! He loved it! Now the 2 boys are able to talk about the books together. The author really nailed it on writing exciting stories for this age group!

If you have a child that is having a hard time moving from picture books to chapter books, this would be a great introduction, as they have illustrations on every page and can be read quickly while also having chapters. This is also a great introduction to reading a series, as the author builds upon the plot from book to book. There are reveals in many of the books (about certain characters or events) so I would definitely advise having your child read them in order :-)

Bought this for our 8 year old on a whim. He usually reads chapter books at an older level but after having someone recommend this series I thought I'd give it a try. He LOVED reading these. He has asked me to get more for him! He's not the biggest fan of reading but once he finds a book he enjoys, it is't pure torture for him...and that was the case with this. The fact that it's 3 books in once was great as well. Highly recommend these!

We purchased these for our grandson because his school library didn’t have them available to check out and read. As grandma, I fully support anything that is pleasing for our grandkids to read. He enjoyed the books a lot.

My children (ages 5 and 6) loved these books! I read it to them and every chapter I'd finish they'd ask for me to continue going on. The chapters are short, lots of pictures for little ones to look at and the content really grabs and holds their attention. I had to go ahead and purchase all of the other ones available in this series because we breezed through this one so quickly and they were so excited to continue on to the other books. One thing that I liked was that these didn't have a lot of name calling, or using words that I don't allow my kids to use (i.e. Stupid or hate). I'd looked at lots of other books for their ages and didn't like a lot of the language used. I was amazed at some of the things they'd say. So I was very pleased with these in general. There were a couple instances of name calling but it was silly name calling, nothing mean or hateful I found. I would def recommend.

My 1st grader likes it A LOT. She finished all 3 in 3 days and is reading it again! Not to scary yet funny. Only thing I personally don't like are the B&W pictures (well, the reader is okay with it and not complaining). She wants me to order #4 and beyond. Hoping to find a better deal than $4.99 (my reader does not like reading on kindle).

Really cute stories about such well designed [and not very scary] monsters. Perfect for the fantastic mind of my 7 year old boy, and I’m a pretty protective mama. Girls would like these books too. I like them! So creative. It is about a boy whose dad is a dentist and he doesn’t have a mom but it’s not mentioned. Could be kindof good for kids who have lost a mom and are ready to try and move forward. Or for single dads. It also tackles how to win over a bully, and there’s a cool little girl. The three of them are fun friends.

5.0 out of 5 stars These books are convincing my 7 year old son chapter books aren't so intimidating...
Reviewed in Canada on February 22, 2023
My son is an advanced reader but he does tend to prefer comic book-style books and while I'm okay with that but I don't want him to view chapter books as a barrier. So, we started with the first binder of doom book on loan from the school library and that went over so well that I bought this set. And I couldn't recommend them more. These stories are cool (because they feature monsters) but more silly than scary. The chapters are short and there are plenty of drawings/interesting things to look at on the pages. It's a great selection for a young reader and we have plans to make it through the whole series together (we alternate reading pages until he's comfortable enough with the format to tackle it alone). Highly recommended.
