Pumpkin Jack Paperback – Picture Book, January 1, 2000
Purchase options and add-ons
When his beloved jack-o'-lantern starts to decompose, Tim puts it outside and watches it transform from pumpkin—to seed—to pumpkin again.
The first pumpkin Tim ever carved was fierce and funny, and he named it Jack. When Halloween was over and the pumpkin was beginning to rot, Tim set it out in the garden and throughout the weeks he watched it change. By spring, a plant began to grow! Will Hubbell's gentle story and beautifully detailed illustrations give an intimate look at the cycle of life.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 7, 2024"Pumpkin Jack" by Will Hubbell is a charming and beautifully illustrated tale that captures the magic of the changing seasons through the eyes of a young boy named Tim. After Tim carves a pumpkin named Jack for Halloween, he sets it out in the garden, where he witnesses the natural transformation that occurs as the pumpkin decays. The story gracefully illustrates the cycle of life, from the joy of Halloween to the rebirth of nature in spring.
Hubbell's gentle storytelling paired with detailed artwork not only engages young readers but also instills an appreciation for the environment and the wonders of growth. "Pumpkin Jack" is a delightful read that combines whimsy with valuable lessons about life, making it a wonderful addition to any child’s library as they learn about the beauty of nature and the seasons.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 27, 2025I am currently using this in my second-grade class as part of the Pumpkin Jack project. We put a pumpkin in a sealed container and let it rot. We did this in October, and we are still going strong at the end of April, waiting for sprouts. There is a group on FB dedicated to this as well. The book itself is wonderful, and the second-graders love it!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 18, 2021Oh yes, this is a fabulous Halloween and fall-season story. I've noticed that books have tended toward female characters in the last years, making up (rightfully so) for all the years when girls were absent in children's lit. So now, I especially appreciate finding boy-characters who combine the best of caring, outdoor loving, energetic and thoughtful characteristics. Artwork is gorgeous. This is a story of a boy and his pumpkin "Jack" through an entire year of seasons, also combining the fun of a holiday with the gardening science of how things grow. Such a beautiful ending, I won't spoil it for you. Our 4-year-old boy (who is much like the boy in the story) clapped at the end! Truly fabulous. I would say this story fits perfectly for ages 3-8. I ordered in paperback, but I'm going to look to see if I can find a hardcover version that's not too expensive.

5.0 out of 5 stars A classic!
I was introduced to this book last year when I had the idea to compost a pumpkin in a sealed container over the winter in my Grade 1/2. That's literally the plot of this book 😜 I've heard if you give it a go and then eventually open the container in the spring you may get a plant too! Worth a shot! I was very happy amazon restocked the book so I could get my own copy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Für unsere Kinder 3 und 5 Jahre alt, sehr interessant.

5.0 out of 5 stars A different experice with a Jack-O-Lantern
This is an unusual Halloween book. It deals more with the actual pumpkin, and what happens to it after Halloween. I bought this for my grandson who loves figuring out how things work, why things happen the way they do - especially in nature, and the different seasons. He loved it. He especially liked "Welcome back Jack"!
