    I am currently using this in my second-grade class as part of the Pumpkin Jack project. We put a pumpkin in a sealed container and let it rot. We did this in October, and we are still going strong at the end of April, waiting for sprouts. There is a group on FB dedicated to this as well.     Oh yes, this is a fabulous Halloween and fall-season story. I've noticed that books have tended toward female characters in the last years, making up (rightfully so) for all the years when girls were absent in children's lit. So now, I especially appreciate finding boy-characters who combine the best of caring, outdoor loving, energetic and thoughtful characteristics. Artwork is gorgeous. This is a story of a boy and his pumpkin "Jack" through an entire year of seasons, also combining the fun of a holiday with the gardening science of how things grow. Such a beautiful ending, I won't spoil it for you. Our 4-year-old boy (who is much like the boy in the story) clapped at the end! Truly fabulous. I would say this story fits perfectly for ages 3-8. I ordered in paperback, but I'm going to look to see if I can find a hardcover version that's not too expensive.
