I bought this train set to go under the Christmas tree. The round track is the only I assembled. It is not very large but went around the tree without having to remove items that were under the tree. It is easy to assemble. The tracks lock and the train stays on rather well. Smoke does indeed come out of the chimney. A plastic bottle for the chimney smoke is provided. One application of water puts out smoke for a long time. The remote is a wonderful feature although it took me a while to learn to use it. If I remember correctly, the sequence is push power button once, then push the train symbol, then push power button again. There is also a button to make the train sounds. It also has lights. I have young grandchildren and great grandchildren. It is impossible to keep them from getting the train off the track but it is easy to get back on track. I think I played with the train more than anyone else. Very nice addition to the Christmas tree and an old fashioned treat you don't see so much any more. Charming and works very well.

This is not a child's toy because it takes a jeweler's touch to connect the cars and to get all the wheels correctly on the track. You will find that while you are very gently getting the wheels of a car on the track the car will become disconnected, then while you connect the car, the wheels will come off the track. This requires a level of skill and patience of an adult, not a child. Once I got the train connected and on the tracks, I then had to figure out how the controller worked. The instructions for getting the train to run are wholly inadequate. After pushing buttons and turning nobs for several minutes we finally got lights to come on and the train mysteriously began to run around the track. It was beautiful, the sound was great, the smoke was working; it was time to stop the train and to call everyone into the room to see the train. Unfortunately, we were never able to find the special combination of buttons and dials that would get the train to run again. I immediately disassembled and re-boxed the train and returned it. After this experience my opinion is that this train useful only as a display item, behind glass, beyond the reach of any hands.

The thing we don’t like is the smaller size of the wheels. Makes it a bit harder than necessary to put all the wagons onto the rails.( Really only a minor gripe)
The kids loved it and when we had it actually running laps under the tree: it seemed to embellish the whole experience for children. They also loved the train noises and the smoke from the funnel.( just add water into the boiler)
The cost was good. The shipping was very quick and fair.
We thought if it was no good then we hadn’t wasted a whole lot of money- but this thing looks great just as a static display.
However, we’re pleasantly surprised how it turned out.
