Purchase options and add-ons
In a society where hustle is the expectation, busyness is the norm, and constant information is king, we've forgotten the fundamentals that make us human, anchor our lives, and provide meaning. Jefferson Bethke, New York Times bestselling author and popular YouTuber, has lived the hustle and knows we must stop doing and start becoming.
Our culture makes constant demands of us: Do more. Accomplish more. Buy more. Post more. Be more. In following these demands, we have indeed become more: More anxious. More tired. More hurt. More depressed. More frantic.
But it doesn't have to be that way. To Hell with the Hustle is your wake-up call to slow down and reclaim your life in an overworked, overspent, and overconnected world.
If you're feeling overwhelmed with the demands of work, family and community or if you're tired of being anxious, lonely, and burned out, To Hell with the Hustle will give you the tools you need to:
- Proactively set boundaries in your life
- Get comfortable with obscurity
- Find the best way to push back against the demands of contemporary life
- Discover the importance of embracing silence and solitude
- Handle the stressors that life throws at us
Join Bethke as he discovers that the very things the world teaches us to avoid at all costs--silence, obscurity, solitude, and vulnerability--are the very things that can give us the meaning, the peace, and the richness we're truly seeking.
Praise for To Hell with the Hustle:
"Ever feel like you need to work harder, put in more time to get ahead, or do everything in your power to be the best? That's the hustle. It can push you to places you don't want to go, and I've gone there more than I care to admit. In his latest book, To Hell with the Hustle, Jefferson Bethke will help you understand why the hustle can seem so alluring, show you how to avoid the traps it’s created in our culture, and find true joy chasing after Christ instead."

Everyone is hustling, but what are we gaining?
Exhaustion. Burnout. The crushing feeling that you should be doing more. What if what we really need more of is space, peace, and slowness? These people think so.

Annie F. Downs, bestselling author and podcast host
"Jefferson Bethke is brilliant and he is modeling in his life and family what he is writing in these pages and it is working. It is inspiring and convicting to watch someone flourish as they let go when culture hangs on and rest when culture says to run. To live like Jesus, to work and rest like Jesus, is the desire of so many hearts (mine included), and Jeff is leading us toward that life."

Craig Groeschel, pastor and NYT bestselling author
“Ever feel like you need to work harder, put in more time to get ahead, or do everything in your power to be the best? That's the hustle. It can push you to places you don’t want to go, and I’ve gone there more than I care to admit. Jennie Allen, author and founder of IF:Gathering
“If anyone can speak to the topic of removing ‘hustle’ from our vocabulary, it would be Jefferson. I’ve watched him practice what he preaches on this, so the words in this book do not come without testing. This book will challenge you to live a life that relies on God.”

- Reviewed in the United States on October 17, 2019This book is now one of my favorites! It is practical and applicable to any life. It was a super quick read and I love that Jefferson ties in so many historical stories or data into each point he is trying to make as well as scripture. It almost proves how biblical principles in a modern world still apply.
It has challenged me to really take a look at my life and say no to what our culture tells us to say yes to. More on the schedule, more extracurricular activities for kids, more money, more volunteering. More more more.
What if we said no to all of the extra stuff and were more intentional with relationships right in front of us? Looking back on your life, what or where has the extra stuff and busy schedules gotten you now? Maybe okay time management skills but is that better than purposeful relationships and what you might have gained from those?
I have fallen to this mindset because it makes me feel productive but at the end of the day, truthfully, I don’t feel fulfilled or joyful. My motivation has been to hustle for money and for more respect. But those things don’t give me joy. Pouring into others and being poured into is what really gives me joy. Quality time and rest is what really gives me joy. I think even the church has fallen to this idea as well. Volunteer more, give more, do more for Jesus. But truly our relationship with Jesus doesn’t come from what we do and how much we do it but rather the heart behind it.
My husband and I have taken points from the book and already implemented them into our lives like Sabbath (for us 12 hours of no phones/technology while he finishes school. Soon to be 24 hours) which usually ends up in a day of Church, naps, and an intense game of scrabble with his mom’s dictionary from the 1980’s. And we love that day. It helps us get set for Monday without being grumpy or burnt out at the beginning of the week.
We are excited to use rest as an advantage instead of falling to burnout and filled schedules. My husband’s mentor always says, “When you say yes to something, you’re always saying no to something else.” And I don’t want to be saying no to all of the good, joyful, things I could have when I say yes to the hustle.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 19, 2019The media could not be loaded.
Jefferson’s thesis is that the speed at which we now live in American society—through the advancements since the industrial revolution to the inundation of iPhone—is slowly, but surely killing us and drawing us farther from the way of Jesus Christ. Hence, to hell, our deathbed.
While there were times throughout the book, I wanted to push back and say, “is hurry really the problem, or do millennials just have trouble balancing a healthy schedule?” Overall I think Jefferson is highlighting the deeper, more insidious root of our culture’s obsession with productivity and social media. In one sense, this book is an indictment on Facebook and Apple as the puppeteers behind the brewing chaos of our society. I don’t think Jefferson is just rambling here, he is one hundred percent correct. Eventually he gets to the root cause, which of course, is sin and Satan. Towards the end of the book, he prescribes an antidote: that is, to live like Christ, who feared no one, knew his identity was in being Beloved by God, and to simply be faithful and loving to our Heavenly Father and our neighbors.
What I personally take away from Jefferson’s book is that humility is key. I don’t need to be anything sensational to be loved. I must do the work in front of me faithfully and with excellence. Not to seek any reward or fame from this earth, only a “well done” from my Heavenly Father. I can personally attest that since I have left social media and embraced a more quiet, humble life with my family, I have found a deep sense of satisfaction and joy. I can hear God’s voice. Not the noise of the world.
So thank you Jeff and the Bethke family for being faithful servants and helping God’s people slow down, so they can truly LIVE like Christ.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 5, 2024I read this book about the time that I started my journey to simple, slow living and I have learned a few things from this book and hopefully you do to. And i thought the author had a lot of really good analogies.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 28, 2022This book provides an interesting perspective and anecdotes about the common busyness and chaos that so often defines and diseases American lives. I appreciated reading this perspective having lived in a country with a slower pace for the past seven years, I can identify, agree with, and am even challenged by many of the points Bethke writes. His writing style is engaging and descriptive, and I can almost imagine his words being preached in a sermon series on Sunday mornings. The chapters are quick, light, and easy to read.
However I do feel that his metaphors and anecdotes begin to drown out and confuse the very points he is trying to make at times. It is sometimes those stories that I remember more from a particular chapter than the actual object behind the chapter. The metaphors are sometimes overly developed until Felt they were nearing the point of breaking down themselves. Furthermore, I would've loved to see more practical examples of how to put some of his ideas into action. Practically speaking, how do we make our lives quieter? What does being boring look like feasibly? What should our Sabbath look like if we observe, or what does Bethke's look like as an example? I was left challenged in some areas but with not much of a road map to get me going in the right direction.
I was honestly going to rate this book three stars until I got to that last chapter, and it really taught, convicted, and challenged me. It spoke to me. I appreciate Bethke's insight and communication of a common problem facing the church.

5.0 out of 5 stars A timely reminder for me that we’re human beings. Not human doings.
I know I’ve read it before, but even still it was a great reminder to me. I do feel a little guilty that maybe I’ve hustled my way through reading it rather than sitting and letting the ideas and concepts percolate more.

I enjoyed read it.
It's a very balanced book, which gives us an escape map from the hustle culture. It cleared my perspective on productivity and improved the relationship between my self-worth and my work.
