great cheap camera perfectly suited to my needs

great cheap camera perfectly suited to my needs
I bought this camera for monitoring my hedgehog's cage to check for abnormal behavior and just to see what she gets up to when I'm sleeping or not there. As far as set-up goes, I liked setting up the Wyze camera better than setting up my Nest cameras. The Nest cameras required having enough light and no shadows to scan a QR code sticker on the camera. Setting up the Wyze camera scanned a QR code that your phone puts out, making it that much easier. The Wyze camera only operates on 2.4GHz wireless frequencies and not the 5GHz. I thought this was going to be an issue because I have a wireless network that puts out both signals with the same name and, therefore, I can only select that name and not choose the 2.4GHz to set that one specifically and I have run into issues in the past with cheaper smart home devices that only operate on 2.4GHz. Instead, I just wasn't connected to the wireless, typed the SSID name and the password, and it connected up without a hitch! If only the smart plugs would connect that easily! The motion detection works great and captured my little scamp knocking around her snuggle sack and castle. The automatic clips are limited to 12 seconds with the free version, but you can use those to then scroll back in time to that particular time frame and you can record from there manually, if you want the whole video of movement. It has absolutely no problem with recording in complete darkness, as you can tell. Although my test is limited to just a few feet of cage, so I can't speak to the wider aspects of using it for long distance night-vision, it worked great fr my purposes. The app does have the ability to set up Two-Factor Authentication (2FA), making them a bit more secure than some, which is great for something you want to use and feel safe about having around. This camera only allows for up to a 32GB microSD card to be inserted (which you will need for anything that isn't a live view)(and is not included). I encountered a brief problem at first as I didn't have any spare ones that small lying around the house, but did have one in a photo camera that I was able to swap into the Wyze camera and put one of my larger micro SD cards into that camera as a replacement. The cable is a bit short, but it's just a micro USB, so you can buy one of longer length, if you need a longer one. You can also daisy chain camera power as they have a USB A output and there is enough power running from the plug supplied that should be able to power 3 cameras from the one plug. Physical setup of the camera was easy enough. It's magnetic at the bottom, so can hold fast to ferrous things. It includes a sticky pad as well as a metal disc for mounting. with the camera down to its base, it's a little easier to secure it to less magnetic things or less metal in-general. I was able to hang it just from the wires on top of the cage with the base collapsed. With the base extended, it put different forces on the magnet, so was trying to pull off of the wires, so I just secured the metal disc in place with duct tape around the wires of the cage, and the camera holds fast to it with the base extended without problem. With the base extended, you have many options for angles of the camera. With it collapsed, you only get flat to the disc/whatever object it is sitting on. As far as physical security of the camera itself? It's pretty nonexistent straight out of the box. There may be something you can buy to add physical security to the camera, but as I didn't need it, I didn't look into it. The camera is, by default, only connected by a magnet. The cable has nothing to prevent tampering or removal from the camera. But, this *is* an indoor camera, so they probably aren't expecting it to be needed as much. If someone can get to it, you've got a problem already. The nest indoor cameras I have are basically the same as far as physical security goes, for 10 times the price, but again, if someone is accessing your indoor cameras, the problem has already occurred. You can add on complete motion capture to the cloud for $1.50/camera/month, so still VERY affordable if you want that extra level of security for seeing who might have messed with a camera(or just to have longer motion clips stored on the cloud than just 12 seconds), but it was unneeded for me because I doubt my Hedgehog is going to go Ghost Recon on me and climb the walls that are guarded against climbing, to get to the top of her cage, to disconnect the camera. I highly recommend this for budget home security and monitoring.

    Style: Wyze Cam v2Verified Purchase
I have to say I was skeptical about a camera in this price range... but I am happy to say that this is one time where the quality and functionality of a product excels far beyond its price point. I have both the Wyze Cam and the Wyze Cam Pan. In fact, I have several now and plan to purchase several more. These cameras are incredible! If you read nothing more than this, I recommend them 100%, love their function and quality, and absolutely will buy more of these Wyze Cams! Worth every dime... and then some!

I have used other more expensive cameras and have honestly NOT achieved the same quality of results on many fronts... The Wyze Cam has, thus far, beat them all and is my current favorite! I have the $230 Nest Cam that I use to watch the interior living area of my home... While the Nest cam has a great picture, the Wyze Cam is arguably BETTER! When compared side-by-side, the Wyze Cam is not only clearer and sharper (admittedly by a slim margin), it's more reliable and provides faster frame-rates. My Nest Cam is a great camera, don't get me wrong, but it disconnects often and the video is very often choppy. When I compare the two, I have to honestly say that my Wyze Cam has far les lag, better frame-rates, and remains connected far more consistently. It was also easier to setup than the Nest Cam.

The Wyze Cam's audio is fair. The positive is that it is clear and crisp... Compared to my Nest Cam, I would say the Wyze Cam is slightly louder and more clear; Both when transmitting audio and receiving it. It's not perfect. It does drop out a bit at times when communicating, but I've found it easier to use with less issues than my more-expensive Nest camera. Wyze Cam for the win here, but just barely.

Night vision quality is surprisingly beautiful! Clear, crisp and bright! No exaggeration. Excellent quality video! Compared to my Nest Cam, they both are about the same... but I think I have to give the edge to Wyze Cam (for sharpness of image and better contrast).

I also love that Wyze Cam is compatible to IFTTT, Tiny Cam PRO, and Alexa. My Echo Show, Spot and FireTV devices all pull up the Wyze Cam images quickly.

We had been looking at upgrading our fire alarms to smart alarms, but that is an expensive option... Wyze Cam saves the day a bit here because it can listen for both fire alarm and carbon monoxide alarms and then send a push notification to your phone when they go off! Too cool! Yeah, it's not as robust as the full solutions a smart alarm provides but it's completely unexpected from a camera like this and an awesome bonus benefit! Now, even though we don't have smart fire alarms, Wyze Cam is picking up the slack here and giving us a free smart option as a bonus. LOVE IT! It works too!

The motion tracking and push notify alerts work well also. Currently, I use the cams for security solutions and to make sure my 85 year old mom with Dementia stays safe at night and during the day. I have the motion tracking set to send me an alert when she's up at night, so that I can make sure she safely gets to the bathroom and back to bed. The sound tracking is also a great feature and has alerted me when mom needed help in her room and I would not have otherwise heard her. My wife and I also use the app in a "baby monitor" function that works perfectly.

Using the Tiny Cam PRO app, we can easily pull up ALL of our cameras on the bedroom or living room TV to see what's happening around the house and yard, and even add a little picture-in-picture view on the screen, if we need to watch the front door for the pizza guy while we watch our movie. This is exactly the kind of cool stuff I was hoping a camera solution would provide for us and this one does it and doesn't break the bank.

I am so pleased with the options and functionality of this camera. It's hard to believe it costs no more than $30.

Are there any negatives? Well, I can't say there's much of anything to complain about at this price point. I have a couple of Zmodo cameras that have decent image quality, but they only work with their proprietary app, they are NOT compatible with Alexa or Tiny Cam PRO and they can't be detected on my router which make it difficult to find work arounds to make them work with other programs, and they have no sound! They also require purchase of a cloud subscription if you want to use them as legitimate security cameras. They also disconnect a lot... I also paid double for them what I paid for the Wyze Cam, so it's a no-brainer... Wyze Cam beats just about every camera I've tried thus far.

I do wish they had an outdoor cam, BUT... I've actually been using these outside WITH ZERO ISSUES! I went on Amazon and purchased weatherproof encasements for the cameras, added a dab of silicon to the plugin port on the back to keep the water out, and mounted the cams. They work AWESOME! Super clear images and fantastic night vision quality! I've used both the Wyze Cam and the Wyze Cam Pan OUTSIDE with virtually no problems...

Yep, I said virtually no problems... Actually, it's not fair to call them "problems" considering these cameras aren't technically intended for outdoors at all, but I did notice a few things...

One, the motion tracking on the Wyze Cam Pan is a bit too sensitive, even when dialed down on the app. It wants to follow everything (i.e. grass moving in the wind, a bug flying by, or when inside it picks up the ceiling fan moving and the dog running around, etc.). You can setup zones for the camera to rotate and auto pan to, which is very cool, but with motion tracking on, it tends to screw up the routine a bit, sometimes leaving the cam to stair at a wall for a bit. These are slight annoyances. On the positive side, the sensitivity of motion tracking is also a plus! It most certainly will catch the slightest movement.... and, when using IFTTT the camera doubles as a motion sensor. Wait... I'm supposed to be talking about negatives.

The second negative (slight negative) is the sound of the rotation motor on the Wyze Cam Pan. It's not annoyingly loud in the room, but it can be heard rather loudly when remotely viewing the camera feed or playing back a recording. Not a deal-breaker at all for me... just something that I noticed.

Thus far I haven't really noticed any clouding up of the lens or anything like that (when using outdoors), but winter isn't quite yet upon us, so we'll see how it fairs... We have had a couple of rain pours and wind storms and the camera is doing just fine.

The night vision LED's are not too noticeable when looking at the camera, but they are very bright towards their intended function; to light up the room or area. They work splendidly! But, I have noticed that if the camera is fixed next to objects that are close in range (especially outside like the overhand of a roof), there tends to be reflection of the light emitting from the IR LEDs in the dark and can tend to wash out the image a bit when night vision is engaged. The picture quality without the night vision is actually very good on its own as long as there are some decent external light sources around, such as porch lights and such. I actually run the Pan camera in the back yard at night without night-vision because the image is usually more visible without the night-vision reflection issues. In the house, however, there are no issues with night vision that I've noticed.

We use a Wyze Cam mounted a couple of feet above our front door and that way can watch anyone walking up to the door AND can two-way chat with them!!! Considering alternative options like The Ring cost upwards of $200 and $300, this is just crazy to achieve basically the same thing for $25 bucks!

TOTALLY HAPPY with this product and highly recommend it. Yes, there are other cameras that have even better quality image and, yes, you pay for that too. Yes, there are other camera systems that provide a more stable, reliable connection and, again, you're gonna pay for those benefits as well. But, my goodness, when a camera costs only about $25 to $35 bucks with all the amazing features these cameras offer, it's nearly impossible to complain about anything.

They enabled me to setup a virtually complete security camera solution for my entire house (as well as a great monitor solution for my elderly parent) and a communication device that enables me to drop-in and chat with anyone in any room of the house (including my pets) while away from home. So cool and I did it all without having to shell out hundreds of dollars, complicated setup and laying cables everywhere.

If you're on the fence about whether or not to try one of these cams, just get it! You can't lose for the price! You will be happy... And the quality is nothing to sniff at. These are so surprisingly fantastic that they give my $230 Nest security cam a run for it's money! They work with popular devices like Alexa, IFTTT, TinyCam Pro and the IP addresses are easily view-able from your home network solution so you may be able to get them to work with other apps not mentioned here. These are easy to work with all the way... and the company keeps the firmware updated and running perfectly. I also think they are probably far more secure than a lot of the other Chinese cheapo cams out there that virtually require you to stay connected to a Chinese cloud server somewhere. With the Wyze cam, you can put in an SD card and use it the same as a cloud system, but it's local and secure. They're also based out of Seattle, WA, and the free cloud service option that includes 14 days of limited recording uses Amazon's AWS servers.

The app could do with some upgrades. I wish it had different mult-view, maybe some widgets, and I wish it had a better TV-formatted solution, but apps like TinyCam PRO ans Amazon's Alexa and FireTV fills in where the Wyze app lacks a bit for now. It would also be great to select multiple motion detection areas, rather than just one per camera, but it's not a big deal. Like I said, hard to complain when the cost is this affordable. It does a LOT for the money!

Thanks Wyze Cam for an awesome product!!!!!!

Great little camera with just a few caveats. Video is great, sound is great, price is amazing. Software is good, it could be better. I find that the motion detection is a little intense and triggers a bit too often, even at low sensitivity. Saved videos also include sound although I'd rather it didn't and as of right now this cannot be disabled.

I love love love that the body is movable and the stand is the way it is, I don't like that it's so loose. I have the camera sitting at one of my entryway windows and the blinds tend to have their way with the camera and cable if I'm not super careful. If the "swivel" were a bit more stiff or could be tightened, this would not be the case.

Finally, I absolutely love that there's 14 days of cloud storage included for free. This to me is the driving point of this camera and why it has replaced my Yi Camera 2 as a security cam for my entryway. It also replaced my back yard camera, which was previously a Nest. I tried the Nest as my entryway cam and that only worked with the trial sub I had, it's useless after the sub is up because I only get static pics or can liveview, which isn't great for security. The Yi Camera 2 works very, very well but I found that the clips are short, very short. I suspect it might work better with continuous recording, but I didn't think of that before I switched. The Wyze Cam works perfectly because the clips are longer. Even without the nice feature of human detection, the Wyze Cam is a bit more sensitive at even the lowest setting so it still makes notification of people coming in and going out of the entryway. I can set it to continuously record, which is nice. The Yi may be able to do this, but I need to test it. That was the good. The bad? Well, nothing's perfect. The software as I mentioned, which is still great as compared to others is a bit lacking vs. the Yi software. There's no human detection. You do get an added benefit, the Wyze comes with the ability to trigger if there's a CO or Fire Alarm that goes off, very neat. There's no way to protect the app currently. The Yi and Nest have PIN and fingerprint protection. If you loan someone your phone to play a game or whatever, they can go right into the app and see what videos are there. Finally, not a huge deal but Yi has a more robust variety of ways to access their devices. You have apps from Android and iOS as well as Windows software. Because of the Windows software, you could technically buy a $100 (or way, way less if used) Intel stick or NUC, etc and set it up as sort of a surveillance/cam station with your Yi Cameras. You can depend on the apps when you're out and about or in bed and your station when you're doing some detective-work...there's nothing like seeing crisp 1080p video of your neighbor letting their dog poop in your yard on your 28" screen, or witnessing that UPS or Fedex driver throwing your package across your driveway to your garage door, or, well, you get my drift. You can then take this video and do whatever the heck you need to with it from your PC vs. from an app on your phone. That isn't to say sharing isn't easy from the app because it really is, so don't let NOT having a Windows or Mac app dissuade you, I'm just giving you info/ideas, etc.
Nest is now off my list in terms of wifi cams to buy. From now on it's Yi and Wyze, affordable, full featured cameras, not hampered by a cloud sub.

Update: A few days later one of the cams has died. Seems a firmware update bricked it. I didn't do anything silly like unplug it and power to my home was not interrupted. I've looked up how to reset it but the directions don't work. Will have to return the camera if reset continues to fail. Color me disappointed. -1 star until they fix fw/software issues.

Update 2: A few days later and the second camera no longer 'sees' the microSD. I purchased 2 and will be sending both back at this point. I'm quite disappointed. I guess I'll just stick with my Yi Cameras until I can test the ver. 2 of these cameras.

Update 3: Please keep in mind that this is a mini-review for VERSION 2 of the Wyze camera. It seems to be the only camera Wyze is selling along with the Wyze Pan Cam, but just wanted to make it clear that the previous updates (1 and 2) are for the VERSION 1 model camera. Wyze or Amazon have stuffed the reviews all together for some reason, which is why this is an updated vs. new review. Most of the original review works for Version 2.

I finally decided to buy version 2 of the cameras for the main reason that they got Echo Show functionality. All of the competing cameras with this functionality cost more money. So far so good. Both survived an initial FW update and both are using microSD cards fine at the moment. As I have learned with these cameras however, time will tell so my expectations are tempered. Loving the Alexa Show integration. It works perfectly, every time. This version of the software also has some little green boxes that pop up around motion detection. This is nice because now your eyes don't have to track all over the video to figure out where motion is in the video or why motion detection was triggered. The only thing lacking for me still (and I'm being greedy here) is human detection which would be so great. Yi cameras also have a nice feature in their software where you set how often you want to be alerted, which is also nice but missing from Wyze software. There's still also no way to lock the software from prying eyes once the phone is unlocked. Again, this isn't a huge deal for me since the cameras are only recording what's going on outside my home vs. inside, but it's a nice little peace-of-mind feature that really should be there.

All in all, I just got these cameras and am enjoying them so far. Will see how long these last.

I've re-added 3 stars. 1 star off for some missing software features that have been around a very long time in competing camera software. Also changed the title of the review.

Update 4 (9/24): So far so good. The cameras have gone through updates and are still working. If you read the review of the previous cameras I purchased, you'll note that they failed after automatic software updates were done. A few features seem to have been added and a few gripes have been alleviated, at least in my case. A trigger for recording sound was added and now, the triggered recording from motion alerts no longer have sound recorded. I have purchased more of these devices, this time to monitor inside my home. Now I can feel better knowing that the recordings won't include sound/conversations etc. I don't want to spy on my family, I just want the video to be there without thinking of it, in case we have an intrusion. I've stopped arming my system daily and am thinking about getting rid of my security system entirely (or opting for something else, anyway). There are also some things I don't remember seeing in the original software with the Wyze Cam v1 that are worth mentioning, like being able to choose where you want motion detection to trigger. I've noticed there's an extra option for full screen or a setting to pick where you want detection to trigger. Seems like Wyze is really listening to its customer base. I'm adding a star due to this.

Still wanted/missing: 1. PIN or some sort of app lock. 2. Re-trigger Timer (prevention from triggering again too quickly or, have it trigger more often depending on user preference). 3. Smart Notifications (ie: software decides based on user preference whether to notify more or less often). 4. Smart Motion Detection with preferences like human/animal only or human/animal and vehicle, if smart detection is turned off, then all motion is picked up. 5. Option to end/stop recording as soon as motion stops.

Update 5 (8/20/2019): Wyze has spoiled me for pretty much most other cameras at this point. The amazing team has added functionality to the app above and beyond my expectations. Of most importance, I'd say is recently added person detection that actually seems to work very well. It is separated software-wise, so you can specifically see persona detected videos vs. motion detected ones (brilliant!). They've also added a lot of functionality that wasn't there initially like grouping, viewing cameras simultaneously, etc. (too many to list). I can tell you right now that unless you're aiming at say, Netgear's 300+ Arlo Pro 2 or higher, you're not going to find a better solution than these little Wyze cams. I think this will be my last update until Wyze releases a new Wyze cam, as there's not much more I can possibly say. In ending, I highly recommend this product based on quality and value.
