Nice little drill

- Reviewed in the United States on February 6, 2025Style: Hammer DrillVerified PurchaseThis hammer drill is the way to go for anytime you need to drill into concrete or brick. I had this exact same drill for the last 15 years and it finally burnt up but I worked it pretty hard during that time. I used my Dewalt battery hammer drill afterwards and nearly burnt that up when drilling a hole into concrete. And it never went very deep. So I bought this corded Dewalt hammer drill again and it’s amazing how much of a difference it is. It drilled through that same hole like butter. Definitely a good drill.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 12, 2018Style: Hammer DrillVerified PurchaseI bought this because I had a flooring project at my house in which I had to drill plywood and concrete to place a subfloor over concrete. I had another hammer drill I was using, but it was 25 years old. It was working fine, but I just wanted to have a backup in case I had a problem. I was using three drills (one to drill the plywood & concrete, one to countersink the holes, and one to screw in the concrete screws). As luck would have it, the old drill quit working. I got out the DeWalt drill, and it was SO much better than the old one. Smaller, lighter, and probably more powerful. The hammer action seemed better, too. The built in stop is a nice feature, also. It made a tedious job much faster. I'm really glad I bought this one. I recommend this drill highly! I had no problems with the chuck loosening, or anything, for that matter.
A plastic case wouldn't be bad, but on the other hand, when I'm not using this I will store it in my tool chest. If it had a case, it probably wouldn't fit where I'm going to store it.
I don't know how long it will last, but it seems well made. Probably will out live me...
- Reviewed in the United States on September 7, 2012Style: Hammer DrillVerified PurchaseI bought this drill because my old Skill would not be up to the task of enlarging my 3" dryer vent to a 4" vent in a brick fascia. I had high hopes for this $80 dewalt, but was concerned that it might not be much better than my old Skill.
I used a Milwaukee 4-1/4" carbide tipped hole saw. It took several hours with many breaks in between mostly due to operator fatigue. I did take 1 break for the drill as it was going to give me a 3rd degree burn if I kept going. Lots of low rpm high torque action really takes its toll on a drill.
End result was a nice clean 4-1/4" hole through 2" of brick and 2" of old growth pine and a fully functional drill. No way in hell my old Skill would have been able to do that.
On to the next project! Recessed lights in plaster ceilings. Looks like it was a good investment!
***UPDATE***
Recessed lights were a success. I drilled 21 holes with a 5-1/2" carbide holesaw in 3/4" thick plaster over drywall ceiling. Lots of plaster dust got into the drill, but it kept going strong. Give it a few rev's when your done to clear out the dust from the motor.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 19, 2024Style: Hammer DrillVerified PurchaseI purchased this because of the great quality of Dewalt products. As per the instructions, to tighten the drill bit you need to tighten all three holes of the chuck-which I've never had to do with other drills. No problem, I did that, and the drill bit lasted for about 10 seconds before it would come loose. I even took a chance on breaking the chuck key and use pliers on it to really make sure the chuck was tight. Lasted only 10 seconds. I expected more quality control from Dewalt. I will be returning this and looking for another brand to purchase.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 1, 2010Style: Hammer DrillVerified PurchaseOne of the better hammer drills I've used. Punched 1/2 inch holes in solid concrete with no pilot hole in 10 sec each. Only backed down when the bit did. The VSR function allows you to start slowly without bit walk. This is especially useful for steel.
At 7.8A its more powerful than most of this form factor. The only thing missing is dual torque but at this price, its a small sacrifice.
4 stars because it's a bit heavy for the size and does not come with a case.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 7, 2007Style: Hammer DrillVerified PurchaseI used to carry a 3/8th inch drill because it was light and fast, and a 1/2 inch hammer drill because it was slow (for large drill bits) and powerful (for drilling concrete, up to 1 inch diameter holes). This DeWalt is twice as fast as my 3/8th inch drill, twice as powerful as the hammer drill that I wore out, and the variable speed trigger works well, too. That means I no longer have to carry 2 drills in order to always have the right tool for the job.
My shopping expeditions generally found imported junk that felt like it would break in about a week, or big, heavy, 22 inch long, "professional" drills, with 2 speed transmissions, for way more than I wanted to spend. I have seen a battery operated hammer drill do the kind of work I do, so knew I didn't need the expensive drills, but I don't like the price of batteries which fail in a year or two. This drill is right in the middle and exactly what I need; simple, corded, slow, fast, light, and powerful.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 12, 2012Style: Hammer DrillVerified PurchaseI will never be an intensive user, so won't be able to comment on durability or suitability for big projects. But my other drill is a cordless 3/8 inch. I have often wished for a corded drill, since everytime I go to use my cordless (twice a year or so) it needs to be charged and the batteries don't hold a charge very long. When a project came up that needed a bigger 1/2 inch drill, I chose to go corded. So now between the two drills I should cover most projects. This one has variable speeds so I can use it to easily start screws, and I look forward to hammer-drilling some concrete holes some day. At the price, the hammer option was essentially free, so I went for maximum flexibility for future projects. I also like the balance between power and weight. A 4lb drill is much easier to use than the competitors 6lbs. You can actually use this one one-handed. I took a guess that 8amps will be more than adequate for my home projects, again it was more of a weight issue (vs 10 amp unit) than cost.
This attacked my current project with ease. Rather than drilling holes or fooling with lag screws, this drill installed headlok screws FastenMaster FMHLGM412-12 HeadLOK Heavy-Duty Flathead Fastener, 4-1/2 Inches, 12-Count attaching 2x12s to 4x4s securely in a few minutes instead of a couple of hours.

Style: Hammer DrillVerified PurchaseFor the odd time you need a hammer drill, you always wished you had one. This is a solid drill. Works very well with and has loads of power. If you have a house with lots of brick, you'll end up using one of these more than you know. And you'll save time. Just used it again to hang some Christmas lights and mount a mantel to my fireplace.
