Z Is for Moose Hardcover – Picture Book, February 28, 2012
Purchase options and add-ons
Caldecott Medalist Paul O. Zelinsky illustrates Kelly Bingham's outrageously funny, critically acclaimed, and boundary-breaking story about a moose, a zebra, and the alphabet! Zebra wants to put on a show as simple as ABC, but Zebra's friend Moose has other (unexpected and hilarious) ideas!
Zebra thinks the alphabet should be simple. A is for Apple. B is for Ball. Easy! But his friend Moose is too excited to wait his turn, and when M isn't for Moose (Mouse gets the honor), the rest of the letters better run for cover.
Exuberant and zany storytelling brings to life two friends and one laugh-out-loud comedy of errors that's about friendship, sharing, and compromise.
The incomparable Paul O. Zelinsky's artwork is bursting at the seams—literally—with child appeal. Breaking the borders of the page, and creating the art both digitally and traditionally, Zelinsky turns convention on its head. The result is a picture book that is innovative, hilarious, and begging to be read over and over again.
Z Is for Moose will bring laughter and fun to every story time and alphabet lesson, whether in school or at home.

From the Back Cover
Z is for Zebra.
Zebra is absolutely certain he’ll be able to direct everyone to appear on the correct page, at the appropriate time, without any mishaps, unnecessary drama, or hurt feelings. It’s the ABCs, for goodness’ sake. How difficult can it be?
Oh, dear.
Zebra forgot about moose.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 31, 2017I read this book for a scavenger hunt. I needed a book that began with Z and my friend suggested this one. I was a very cute book. And would be very fun to read to children... or adults. Z is for Moose has a total of 194 words, I will now endeavor to write a review that consists of 250 words. Thank you BTB (#BeatTheBacklist). Z is for Moose is an alphabet book, that starts out like any standard alphabet book, A is for Apple, B is for Ball... etc. and this book is like a movie in which Zebra is directing it and making sure all the characters are in it. Some where a little down the road, um... or pages, moose hops in and wants to be part of the action, he wants his moment in the spot light, and then begins to mess with Zebra's well planned script. Many of the pages are drawn with adorable characters telling moose to go away, and moose asking "is it my turn yet?". The art work is simple, nothing too fancy, but will still draw a child's eye, and will surly bring laughter to anyone who is reading it. There is a heart warming moment in the end, when Zebra skips over Moose at M and includes him in the end for Z, by saying Z is for Zebra's Friend, Moose. The hardcover book also has room in the beginning and in the end, so for those who wish to write long gift notes for people have lots of room. I am planning on sending this book to a couple of friends after I write them a note. HA! 284 words! Take That!!!!!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 9, 2013Even my not-quite 3-year-old grandson appreciates the humor in this clever alphabet story. Each page is interesting. Sometimes you have to search for exactly where the letter is on the page or what the letter stands for. The moose's antics are pretty funny, especially when he learns that M is for mouse, not moose; but the zebra, who seems a little bossy and unfeeling at first, really saves the day with his diplomatic solution for the needy moose. It's all very cute. This is one of the few non-board books I have for my grandson at my house, and the pages have held up well.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 20, 2018I’ve been a teacher for 11 years. Now I am a reading specialist for grades K-8th. Needless to say- I’ve read hundreds of books in my career. This one is one of the cutest and funniest ones ever. It’s great for teaching/reinforcing ABC skills—— while also being an easy read for a character lesson on patience, sharing, and friendship.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 26, 2019Funny and cute alphabet book. Moose impatiently waits for M. When M stands for mice, he has a temper tantrum! Love the illustrations. A favorite book for younger children. Not only about the alphabet, but also about waiting your turn and how to act when you don’t get what you want.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 20, 2023The book is funny and our son loves it. But you should remove the photo showing the stuffed moose as that's one of the reasons we purchased it and it does not come with the moose. Disappointing!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 21, 2017I'm a reading specialist in a public school that works with multiple grade levels. At the beginning of the year when I work with my kindergarten students on their letters and letter sounds, I read a LOT of alphabet books - so I'm always on the lookout for fun and interesting twists on alphabet books. This is, by far, my students' favorite ABC book. The twists in the storyline and the creative pictures keeps them engaged and makes them think about how the alphabet works. One of my students requests this story over and over again whenever I let them choose a book for me to read aloud. I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a fun ABC book for their child and especially for teachers working with Pre K and K students.

5.0 out of 5 stars Such a great book!
I love this book. Such a fun way to review the alphabet with my class. Moose is so funny. He just wants his turn. Our class had a good discussion on patience and how moose reacts to not being in the story. We discuss that a tantrum is not the best way to show disappointment or frustration. We like that in the end zebra helps his sad friend.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!
Wonderful story with beautiful drawings. At first it seems to be an ABC book so suitable for very young children, but I think the 'story' would be lost on them.
Not really a book for learning your ABC's but a funny version of the normal ABC books!
Great fun and a wonderful quick bedtime story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Genius and amazing.
Literally my favourite children's book! It is very funny and has excellent illustrations. It is about a hilarious moose who wants to be in the alphabet. I love it and so do my class- we even had a discussion afterwards about how to deal with situations without having a tantrum like the moose! Its Genius!

5.0 out of 5 stars Kids love it.
My kids love this book. It is such a fun spin on the classic learn-your-alphabet book. My two year old really enjoys correcting the fact Z is not actually for moose, and my 5 year old because it is silly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Funny, engaging alphabet book
Really funny alphabet book for children who know the alphabet and 'get' how it works. My class of Year 1 children love it!
