    JOY STEUERWALD found herself drawing as soon as she could hold a pencil. So winning her first art contest in 3rd grade just sealed her fate; Joy was destined to be an illustrator. She graduated from San Jose State’s animation and illustration program with a Bachelor of Science Degree and has created art for the educational market, the giftware industry, and children’s book publishing. Joy usually sketches with blue Col-Erase pencil, adds a pencil line, then uses Photoshop to add textures, details and color to create art that is playful and fresh. Writing stories is something Joy looks forward to doing more of as well. Her muse is a miniature, red, short haired Dachshund who has been joined by a small, human boy.

    I am a children's book illustrator and a trained painter, having honed my artistic skills at the Fine Arts Academy in Gdańsk, where I currently live with my daughter Helenka, my husband Filip, and our two adopted dogs. Nature is a constant source of inspiration for me, and I am deeply passionate about creating educational content for the youngest audiences. My projects are diverse, ranging from picture books and backgrounds for animated shorts to iPad apps and commercials. Colors are bright. light to carry despite the multiple solid pages. Flaps (animals are hidden behind) are high quality and will last long even if your baby is tough on toys and books. My daughter tried to chew it, but gave up. It's too hard. Now, it's one of her favorite books to read and enjoy.

    This book series is great! The flaps are fantastic for toddlers--they'd really need to work to rip them off. It's not impossible to do so (if you have a little one who really has made it a mission to destroy flap books maybe hold off a bit longer) but it's definitely sturdy enough to hold up to just general flap pulling enthusiasm. The illustrations, choice of animals and little text factoids are great. The book recommends itself for ages 2+ but we found it to be a winner from around 18+ months.
