The orange Big 12 Speedlite Square has the same features as our Aluminum Speed Squares, but it’s constructed of lightweight high-impact structural composite material. The weight savings alone is great, but this tool is also ideal for use with siding and other delicate materials, since it won’t mar softer finishes. Some of the features on this square included the beveled edge for ease of reading and it's Diamond cut out and scribe bar for easy layout.

Cutting laminated shingles square and at precise lengths was a hassle. The Speedlight's 12" fence makes it much easier. For lumber, the square can guide the base plate of a saw. Because I keep putting the square down, the color helps me spot it when I need it again. On youtube, a carpenter showed speedquare like mine with black markings. He said he'd smeared on acrylic paint, then wiped it off the surface with a cloth. It wasn't so easy for me. I needed a toothpick to paint in the straight grooves and a cotton swab to dab paint into the characters. Wiping with a damp cloth made a mess until I learned to blot the paint with toilet paper first. The results were worth the trouble. If I have in my pocket a couple of feet of small string, weighted at one end, this square will show me the pitch of a roof. At the rake, I turn the square so that the fence is toward the peak and the ruled side is along the roof or facia board. If I suspend the string from the pivot notch, it will show the pitch in degrees or inches in 12. The upper "CL" mark has an indentation to guide a drill bit. I used a 1/16" bit to make a hole big enough for my pocket plumb line. If I suspend the line from the hole and adjust the square so that the lower CL mark lines up with the string, the hypotenuse is level, as in the second photo. If I don't have a pocket plumb line, it will still show me vertical and horizontal if i suspend it by the diamond hole, as in the first photo.
