    I've got six of the barrel-shaped Snyders football pretzel jars that I got many years ago from Costco. I use them to store dog food and biscuits, cereals, and dried grains and beans. I've also used them as carboys for initial cider ferments. It's the same kind of plastic that peanut butter jars are made of, meaning they hold up really, really well.

    Remembering how long Snyder's pretzels used to stay fresh in the big jar, I decided to order one of the squarish jars this time. The pretzels, of course, are wonderful, tasty, crunchy, but not so hard that my old teeth can't handle them. The jars, being squared off, work more efficiently on a shelf and they have a recessed grab handle. I now want to find a gasket that will fit the lids so I can get a good airtight seal for storing rice and such with an oxygen absorber. I dislike throwaway plastics very much, but these have great utility for long-term use and are far lighter than glass.
