Possibly the best thing I ordered from Amazon during this pandemic!

Possibly the best thing I ordered from Amazon during this pandemic!
This has turned out to be one of the best things I've bought while stuck at home during this pandemic with a newly-turned-three-year-old and an almost-six-year-old. I was a little skeptical because my three year old is not a fan of most craft activities and gets easily frustrated with small, fiddly tasks. To my surprise and relief they could both do it and they both loved it! It comes with a few peg boards and some templates to place underneath them. Mine have both followed the templates (the three year old with a little help) and they've also both done their own patterns on the pegboards without a template. I have recommended this to so many friends looking for things to do these days, so if you're on the fence I would say give it a try!! Put on some kids' music or a kids' story in the background and cross your fingers that it will keep them occupied for an hour. Note about ironing: I know a lot of people have used similar products to these when they were kids but I had never seen these before so I was a little lost as to how to get to the final product without directions in the kit. If you are like me, here's what to do :) It comes with a random piece of parchment paper - keep that and it's what you'll use to place between your iron and the beads when it comes time to melt the beads together. Heat your iron to its highest setting while they're working and when they're done carefully bring the pegboard to the ironing board. Place the parchment paper on top, press and iron until you can see the beads start to melt and smoosh together a little bit. Peel the parchment paper off of that side, flip the pegboard over so the design is now on the ironing board with the un-melted side up. Replace the parchment paper and iron again to make sure it's sturdy. Try and melt about the same on both sides or the finished product will curve and warp. But the kids don't seem to mind.

This is a great starter set of the bigger sized fuse beads. I got these originally for my 3 year who wasn't enjoying the smaller size fuse beads as much as my 6 year old, but now both kids love these! These take longer to melt together than the smaller beads but that's to be expected.

NOTE: These beads are ever so slightly smaller than the Perler brand biggie beads. I later bought the Perler brand replacement beads since I didn't need the plates again. The Perler beads work on the heart and the hexagon plates, but they are just slightly too big for the square plate, unfortunately. The two brands of beads can be used together on the heart plate and hexagon plate. I did end up getting the Perler square plates though. If I had known that, I probably would have just ordered this set again instead of mixing brands but oh well. Hopefully this helps someone else!

This is a great tool to use for kids to work on fine motor skills, motor planning, creativity, and flexibility when their creation inevitably gets bumped and pieces fall off. My adhd son can sit for 20+ minutes just working on different patterns. These are not comparable with Perler Beads Biggie Beads. There is a slight it difference in size for both the beads and the boards, but for the price and the variety of colors ( regular and glow) these are my favorite. I will keep buying these.

One con is they do take a long time to melt. It can be done, but it takes time and attention. It doesn’t deter me from doing it, I just don’t melt every project.

The grands were familiar with the regular size melty pegs.
They absolutely loved the giant pegs!
This set is a good value.
Ages 4-10 with 6-8 year olds enjoying longest.

    Great for little fingers

I used this with my five year old daughter. I made a mistake thinking these were the small ones, these beads are large, totally my fault, the description clearly says XL. Either way, still a great purchase. Kept my little occupied for at least 45 minutes. She happily made 3, using the heart plate, back to back. This is great for younger kids because of the larger size. My child has amazing dexterity, so can do the tiny ones too, but this is probably better for the late preschool/kindergarten age group for most kids. Kit came with parchment paper which was good. Beads melted well, just a took little longer due to size. I used the highest heat on the iron. But, melted evenly and made a super sturdy piece. Too heavy to be a magnet though, so we put string in the little holes remaining and hung it on the wall and window. A+
