A Note From the Authors
It seems we’re all in need of a good hug, real connection, and something delightful to celebrate right now.
Enter 25 Days of the Christmas Story: An Advent Family Experience.
This book began a few years ago as we wrote about each individual character in the Christmas story. We wanted to teach our kids the real story of Christmas. But we also wanted to do it in a fun way that took the events of Jesus’s birth beyond the pages of the book and into their everyday lives.
We hope this Advent family experience will offer you and your family a way to connect, learn about the real Christmas story (we learned so much writing this!), and celebrate Jesus’s birth with new traditions, dinnertime stories, bedtime conversations, and family activities.
We hope this Christmas “hug” brings beautiful memories to your home this Advent season!
This family devotional contains special features to help your kids remember what they’ve learned and take it to heart in a fun and engaging way!
Each day contains bite-sized takeaways including a character trait and life lesson
Get creative! Spending time doing the family activity or discussing questions to help you apply what you’ve learned. Then end your time in scripture and prayer.
Record your favorite memories from the season in the back pages of the book. Revisit them, make new memories each year, and enjoy this sweet heirloom.
Also available from Dr. Josh and Christi Straub
What Am I Feeling?
It’s show-and-tell day at school, and Sam and his friends are feeling lots of emotions. He wonders why he feels flippy in his tummy. And why is Alex stomping his feet? And does Hudson usually have such a big grin?
After several unchecked feelings threaten to ruin the big day, Sam and his friends start to learn how to give each emotion a name and ask God to help them remember that “a feeling is just a feeling—it’s not in charge of you.” In a world where kids are dealing with everything from sibling rivalry to bullying, divorce to tragedy, What Am I Feeling? offers a biblically grounded way for children to verbalize their feelings, develop empathy and self-control, and understand their wonderful God-given emotions.
BONUS! Also includes a pull-out feelings chart for your wall!
What Do I Do with Worry?
Young Willow is a worrier. She’s just moved to a new neighborhood, and with it comes a new lineup of questions and doubts. What if there are tornadoes here? What if I trip getting on the bus? What if my dad loses his new job? What if a star falls out of the sky and lands on my dog?
Sometimes silly but always real, Willow’s worries keep her from enjoying her new home, from resting well, and from working with classmates. Thankfully, she has wise parents and some new friends to help her along and to teach her the biblical way to deal with her emotions.
Dr. Josh and Christi Straub—authors, leaders, and family advocates—are passionate about giving parents knowledge and resources to help their children navigate these emotions. The couple offered their wisdom and relevance in their first picture book, What Am I Feeling? and they continue to do so in this follow-up board book.
Homegrown: Cultivating Kids in the Fruit of the Spirit (Bible Study)
"When the Holy Spirit lives through us, we model the fruit of the Spirit for our kids. These nine characteristics are: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Join Dr. Josh and Christi Straub in this 6-session study to discover the fruit of the Spirit in the context of your parenting and family life, learn how to cultivate growth in your own children, and explore practical ways to live out the fruit of the Spirit together."

- Reviewed in the United States on January 15, 2021I gave this to my first-grade religious education students at the beginning of December. We have far fewer classes this year because of the pandemic, and so I sent this home with them in the hope that they and their families might enjoy the book together. I so enjoyed reading it myself. It highlights characters from the Bible, discussing their admirable qualities, and links the Old and the New Testaments. It also gives ideas for family activities and questions for family discussion. The illustrations are contemporary looking, happily. Often, I think, Bible illustrations can look really dated and the kids can't relate to them. I am responsible for teaching Catholic catechism, and there was only one page, on receiving God's forgiveness, that I felt the need to write a couple extra sentences to match Catholic teaching. I think people of all ages can learn from this book, and I would definitely purchase it again for my students.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 16, 2024Follows the Christmas story, main focus on characters with some locations & objects, has a short daily lesson and character trait along with a family activity/exercise, set of deep dive conversation questions, daily verse, and short prayer. Assumes familiarity with the Christmas story and/or daily reading before going to the devotional.
For ages 4+, can require some parental read ahead and planning for activity, just not exactly what I’m looking for (comprehensive) But would be a great gift for a young family

Yet also sharing the truth that truly, Daniel was scared inside when he saw Gabriel but how, Gabriel.was used to ease the mind and heart of others. So for us not to fear, because with God, we can be courageous. ". That message in any time of life can be great for a child or parent! My husband and I follow Josh and Kristi on their podcast and Facebook and their helpful suggestions have been awesome for our family life! We enjoyed and still do read What am I feeling and their contents, in my opinion, are not just for kids to learn, but as parents we always learn about ourselves as well. This is going to be a great book to enjoy a slower pace and meaning of our Christmas time where I believe we will even incorporate I to our family Shabbat family times together. I look forward to enjoying this with our 7 & 9 year olds but also with grandparents and friends. Thank you Josh & Kristi for sharing your heart! It also arrived MUCH MUCH quicker than it says. It only took a few days. I will update as we begin reading and practicing :) Enjoy this book, its lovely!

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for kids' attention spans
My 7 yr old has not spent a lot of time in church for various reasons, and is influenced by commercial Santa who gets kids anything they want. This book is interesting, age appropriate, and is a great way to prepare ourselves for Christmas. She is even interested in learning more about the 1 page stories each day, and it sparks great convos.

1.0 out of 5 stars Kindle version has missing words
I purchased the kindle version of this to read with my kids and was disappointed when many of the pages had words missing!! I have tried all sorts of troubleshooting and nothing seems to bring up the words. I was looking forward to doing this devotional with my kids as the sample looked great. I’d recommend buying a paper version and not the kindle as it is not reliable.
