Helpful Product but with a Couple Minor Design Flaws
I make many meals over the course of a day for various purposes. As such, my drain rack is always filled with those items I constantly cook with – it makes little sense for me put them away when I’m just going to grab them again in an hour or two. When I saw this product, I thought it could be helpful in giving me some additional (and convenient) drainage space. And I was right. I’ve been using this rack for two days now as a second drainage layer over my main drainage rack and sink (see photo). When I’m in the middle of multiple recipes, this upper rack is super convenient for a quick rinse and placement of those items I know I’m going to use again shortly (like measuring cups and spoons or a sauce pot, etc.). And even when I’m not multitasking over several recipes, I found myself using this rack as extra temporary counter space – for example, by tossing a ramekin of just chopped onions on top to get it out of my way until I needed to add it to a recipe. So it definitely provides some convenient space over your sink that can be used for more than just drainage purposes. I do have a couple of issues with the design, however. First, the rack itself was welded together in an unusual fashion. The top cross wires are welded below the frame on each end, but are welded above two middle support wires. The result is that the entire rack surface (where you place your dishes) has a bowed shape: higher in the center and lower at the sides (see photo). This means something flat like a pan, cutting board, or plate will not rest firmly on the top of the rack – it rocks and even slides down to the sides with just a gentle nudge. Taller items, like cups and glasses, lean on an angle and can easily slide too. I wish the surface were truly flat: I’d feel more comfortable placing more fragile items on top if they sat squarely on the rack. Second, the four expandable feet move in and out of the brackets very easily. Because this will sit on top of your sink, you know you’re going to bump it as you’re washing pots and pans and other dishes. With the feet moving so readily, it’s easy to knock the rack out of place – or even right into the sink if you’re resting any of the feet on the actual sink rim (as I am). I helped solve this problem by tightly placing 4 small, black zip ties on each foot (see photo). This helps hold the feet in place so the whole rack won’t move out of position so easily. It would have been nice if the feet were designed with some way to lock their positions in place.
