This instant New York Times bestseller and “claustrophobic spine-tingler” (People) from Ruth Ware follows a group of employees trapped on a snow-covered mountain.
Getting snowed in at a luxurious, rustic ski chalet high in the French Alps doesn’t sound like the worst problem in the world. Especially when there’s a breathtaking vista, a full-service chef and housekeeper, a cozy fire to keep you warm, and others to keep you company. Unless that company happens to be eight coworkers…each with something to gain, something to lose, and something to hide.
When the cofounder of Snoop, a trendy London-based tech start-up, organizes a weeklong trip for the team in the French Alps, it starts out as a corporate retreat like any other: presentations and strategy sessions broken up by mandatory bonding on the slopes. But as soon as one shareholder upends the agenda by pushing a lucrative but contentious buyout offer, tensions simmer and loyalties are tested. The storm brewing inside the chalet is no match for the one outside, however, and a devastating avalanche leaves the group cut off from all access to the outside world. Even worse, one Snooper hadn’t made it back from the slopes when the avalanche hit.
As each hour passes without any sign of rescue, panic mounts, the chalet grows colder, and the group dwindles further…one by one.

Editorial Reviews
Review
“[Ware] sets the bar higher in One By One by burying her principal players in an Alpine chalet beneath an avalanche. . . . Readers will recognize the obvious homage to Agatha Christie’s And Then There Were None, but with enough ingenious twists to make this whodunit another triumph for Ware.”
—The New York Times Book Review
"Not only do Ware’s novels wink at Christie in a saucy way, but Ware herself is turning out to be as ingenious and indefatigable as the Queen of Crime."
—Maureen Corrigan, The Washington Post
"A claustrophobic spine-tingler."
—People, "Best Books of Fall 2020"
“Ware manages to make a retreat in a chalet in the wide-open French Alps feel claustrophobic, nerve-wracking and deadly… The author’s choice of telling the story in dueling narratives – Liz, a former Snoop employee who was invited to join in the retreat; and Erin, one of the chalet’s two staff members – enhances the steadily escalating pace of the book.”
—USA Today
“Especially timely, given that the terror of isolation is at its heart… This is And Then There Were None rendered for the twenty-first century.”

I keep my earbuds shoved into my ears on the minibus from Geneva Airport. I ignore Topher’s hopeful looks and Eva, glancing over her shoulder at me. It helps, somehow. It helps to shut out the voices in my head, their voices, pulling me this way and that, pummeling me with their loyalties and their arguments to and fro.
Instead, I let James Blunt drown them out, telling me I’m beautiful, over and over again. The irony of the statement makes me want to laugh, but I don’t. There’s something comforting in the lie.
It is 1:52 p.m. Outside the window the sky is iron gray, and the snowflakes swirl hypnotically past. It’s strange. Snow is so white on the ground, but when it’s falling, it looks gray against the sky. It might as well be ash.
We are starting to climb now. The snow gets thicker as we gain height, no longer melting into rain when it hits the window but sticking, sliding along the glass, the windscreen wipers swooshing it aside into rivulets of slush that run horizontally across the passenger window. I hope the bus has snow tires.
The driver changes gear; we are approaching yet another hairpin bend. As the bus swings around the narrow curve, the ground falls away, and I have a momentary feeling that we’re going to fall—a lurch of vertigo that makes my stomach heave and my head spin. I shut my eyes, blocking them all out, losing myself in the music.
And then the song stops.
And I am alone, with only one voice left in my head, and I can’t shut it out. It’s my own. And it’s whispering a question that I’ve been asking myself since the plane lifted off the runway at Gatwick.
Why did I come? Why?
But I know the answer.
I came because I couldn’t afford not to.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 26, 2023Two narrators: one works at a ski resort; the other accompanies a tech company she used to work for on a week-long holiday at the resort. Then comes a blizzard, an avalanche, and total isolation of the vacationers and the resort workers. Murders ensue.
I found this story extremely compelling throughout, it's very well-written, the characters are strong and believable, and puzzling but engaging facts keep being revealed. The book is so compelling that it ruined a night's sleep for me; I couldn't put it down. My only complaint is a disappointingly flat ending, but that's not enough to take away from my deep enjoyment of this novel. I highly recommend it.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 1, 2025For those looking for a thriller set in a remote ski area this book is for you. It was exciting and modern mixed in with below zero temperatures. Had an idea who the antagonist was from the start but I was interested in finishing to find out the why of it all.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 5, 2024This was a spine tingling thriller from the get go. As always with a Ruth Ware novel it was set in a fabulous location that gets cut off from access to the outside world when they need it most. It makes you think of items you need to pack in case of an emergency when you travel. Lots of power back ups and heavy duty flashlights!
I didn’t know who the killer was until it was being revealed and I was blown away by the extra secrets we didn’t know. Ruth does a fantastic job building up the suspense and she pulls you in deeper and deeper!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 16, 2020One by One is sharply written, and completely addictive; Ruth Ware took a risky gamble by re-framing the classic locked-room mystery of Agatha Christie, to tell a modern day thriller taking place during a company retreat among snowy mountain. It's risky because her intervention to the classic murder mystery formula might ultimately also be the book's downfall (see what I did there—for a novel involving an avalanche...), ending up not pleasing fans of either murder mystery or thriller genre.
The saving grace is the overall setup, and the cast. While not necessarily to everyone's taste, I personally find the corporate dispute and app development angle fascinating, as well as refreshing to read within this context. Ruth Ware does an excellent job weaving them throughout, without feeling like she is simply regurgitating her research on tech startups. The characters are well fleshed-out, believable as someone from that particular social circle (I've encountered a few in my life to confirm!). You end up feeling sympathetic towards (some of) them, which makes the lingering epilogue still enjoyable to read through.
My recommendation: go into this book without assuming where the story should go (based on an assumed genre standard), then you might extract more enjoyment out of it.
**Minor spoiler ahead**
Ultimately One by One is still a thriller at its core, just decked out in murder mystery ornaments. Even with the clues and setups, there's ultimately no real mystery to solve; the novel reveals the culprit quite informally at about 60% (I was dumbfounded, and thought this was simply a misdirect—so I guess in a way it did succeed as a 'plot twist'), which might dispirit readers who are eager to deduce and guess the murderer alongside. In hindsight, the fact One by One's narrative is written from such limited perspectives, should be a telltale sign that deception is never the game it's attempting to play.
On the other hand, the first half of the book might bore thriller seekers to death; like most locked-room mysteries, it primarily consists of: the group being dispersed → someone is killed with strange circumstance → the group assembles and goes over plausible motive and alibi → the cycle repeats, and Ruth Ware remains quite faithful to this rhythm. For readers who are expecting something more event-driven, similar to her previous works, might find the large cast and keeping track of everyone's whereabouts an exhausting chore.
One by One does have some narrative inconsistencies, which dampen the its overall plausibility. One being the blatant dismissal of character Kate, the chalet's booking manager. Being offsite from the avalanche, she has the knowledge and capability to send help immediately. But the novel simply ignores this in order to create an extended period of isolation at the chalet. The characterization of the culprit is another weak spot, who is extremely sharp and resourceful one moment, and completely dumb in others. his/her demise is led by a series of stupid choices, which is in stark contrast to the first half of the book, where he/she is able to murder multiple people without suspicion.
**Minor spoiler ends**
Ultimately, I had a good enough time with One by One, even though the trope-bending experiment is less than successful, and the overall pacing feels lopsided (I've rarely encountered an epilogue this excessive), the setting and the character still makes it an engrossing read.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 14, 2020Ruth Ware does it again. I read “Woman in Cabin 10” in 2017 and wrote that I stayed up way too late reading it. This time I started listening to “One By One” on Audible but became so impatient to know what was going to happen next that I bought it on Kindle. And spent the next three hours compulsively reading.
Some have compared it to Agatha Christie’s “And Then There Were None,” but apart from a vague plot resemblance in terms of murders and stranded people, this book is way more. It’s Agatha Christie on steroids in my opinion. I read every Agatha Christie book as a teenager and have seen every film and TV adaptation at least twice so I feel fairly confident in my opinion.
Story: a group of 10 employees/shareholders in a music listening app called Snoop—the one weak thing in the book, I don’t understand the value of an app that lets you know what other people are listening to at the time they are listening; I felt it made the beginning awkward—rent a luxurious chalet in the French Alps that comes with two staff, chef Danny and hostess Erin. They are there for a week of skiing, relaxing, and, it turns out, for announcing that Snoop is in the midst of a buyout offer.
Tempers flare over this. Some of the shareholders want to hold onto the company and take it public while others want the buyout. Tension is high and, as the group head out for a morning of skiing in bad weather, the reader knows this is not going to end well. However, there is more than just a person disappearing—a tragic accident? A major avalanche, damages the chalet and cuts out egress to the village below. “And Then There Were None” indeed, two more murders occur. However, there are still survivors and the question for me became, who the murderer was and why and who would ultimately survive. Although we do know, right at the beginning of the book in a news item, that only four people actually die. Which will be the four?
The story is told in alternate chapters by Liz, minority shareholder, not quite part of the sleek group that forms the majority of the Snoopers and Erin, the hostess. That was actually another reason why I switched from Audible, because it was hard for me to keep track of who was speaking. The narrator did change accents and in general did a good job but I still found it difficult, especially if I got distracted.
I very much enjoyed all the descriptions of snow and skiing as I enjoyed downhill skiing when I was young. Never skied in France and, truthfully, I was not a great skier but that actually lent a lot to my understanding and empathy of the fear that some of the skiers had.
If you like thrillers that are one notch above “cozies”—have a bit more fear and modernity in them—or perhaps if you have ever gone on a skiing holiday, I think you would find this good escapist reading. A word of warning, there are a lot of f-words in it. No sex though.

5.0 out of 5 stars Acionistas, avalanches e assassinatos

4.0 out of 5 stars Mystery and deaths at the top of the mountain
Ruth Ware’s latest novel, “One by one” - clearly resembling a locked-room mystery - is set in an isolated and luxury chalet which is only reachable by a funicular from the French ski resort of St Antoine.
The novel's incipit starts off by reporting a sensational murder of four British people after an avalanche hit the area and the chalet and its guests and staff were trapped inside, adding that the local police was still investigating. So, by the start of the first chapter the reader is already hooked. There is mystery, curiosity about what really happened, why and who did it. By then, you are already under Ruth Ware’s spell.
The ingredients that make this novel a fast-turning thriller are definitely the location – the mountains, the isolation, the chalet and the runs, so well depicted that you might even think that you have been there too, and its characters: the guests - shareholders and employees of the latest, coolest new music app called Snoop, who are not only planning to spend a relaxing week-off but also deciding the company’s future by accepting a buyout that could make some of them unexpectedly rich, and the staff: two young Britons, Erin and Danny, who are bound by a strong friendship.
A first fatal accident is followed by three more deaths, in a sequence of events that leaves nothing to fatality: there is a murderer among them and the awareness of this makes the characters and the readers wondering why this is happening. And who is killing them, one by one.
We are guided through the whole story thanks to the alternate narration of Liz, one of the guest, and Erin: two women who look apparently different, but who both hide important secrets.
