Ditch Your Inner Critic At Work: Evidence-Based Strategies To Thrive In Your Career Kindle Edition
Are you looking for more in your career than a paycheck? What does it take to find job satisfaction? So many of us are feeling stressed out, taken for granted, and unhappy at work: the constant pressure, the reorganizations, the politics—do you feel as though you have nothing left to give? Whether you feel a mild dissatisfaction or an intense dislike for your current job, the goal is clear: to find your passion. But to find the right career, you have to let go of the critical inner voice that tells you that you’ll be happier if you make more money, work harder or reach the next promotion. At some point, you’ll need to rethink your assumptions about your career and take a new approach.
Should we even expect to be fulfilled and happy at work?
Yes, we should, says author Susan Peppercorn. In her new transformative book, Ditch Your Inner Critic at Work. Evidenced-Based Strategies to Thrive in Your Career, she makes the most compelling case yet that career satisfaction―and the full engagement that comes with it―is more important than ever in today’s workplace. Susan brings you a step-by-step guide to help you develop the tools and resources you need to bring more happiness and satisfaction to your work; in your current job or a new one. Through personal experience, client case studies, research on happiness and motivation, self-assessment tools, and exercises, she shows you how to create a realistic career vision, set goals, and line up the right resources to take control of your career and happiness.

Review
"Research remains in the Ivory Tower until someone like Susan comes along. She reveals useful applications of academic research that people can readily grasp and use to make meaningful changes in their career. A valuable read that combines the most practical ideas from positive psychology with action steps for finding and realizing career satisfaction."
--Tal ben Shahar, PhD, author of the international best sellers Happier and Being Happy
"This is the book I wish I had had at 21, when I first entered the work world full-time and this is the book I will carry with me for coaching conversations with clients around the world. Susan Peppercorn has given us a straight-talking, inspired guide - an antidote really - to the chronic negative thought habits that make success feel fleeting, joy impossible and contentment unachievable. Her tools, direct and clear questionnaires, help us come to see how we might be prone to debilitating perfectionism, pessimism or low self-regard, and even more importantly, she teaches us how to soften the frequency and impact of such thinking. This is a guide that enable us to hold onto the striving for excellence, attention to detail, tenacity and conscientiousness that is often at the heart of perfectionism...and begin to let go of the chronic anxiety and unrealistic expectations that make living and working chronically difficult." --Maria Sirois, Psy.D. Author of A Short Course in Happiness After Loss (and Other Dark, Difficult Times).

- Reviewed in the United States on November 4, 2017Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI invite you to read Susan Peppercorn’s new book. Built on years of experience with clients, she shares her personal and professional “aha’s” to guide readers who are working to achieve their professional goals while maintaining their personal integrity.
Easy to read and filled with lots of ways to self-examine, this book will help you to recognize and explore your own values and beliefs regarding happiness and how it relates to your job choices. She introduces lots of tools backed up by rigorous research as well as her own experience as a career coach. She incorporates a continuum of choices for those for those who seek to understand and act on their dissatisfaction but who may not be ready to take a big leap from current to totally different paths. Filled with lots of examples, no doubt with several that will hit home for most readers, the book provides comfort to those who think they are all alone in their feelings and experiences, and encouragement to take the steps suggested to move forward.
The takeaways are that happiness and job satisfaction will fluctuate over a career. Job satisfaction requires flexibility and re-calibration along the way and should not be externally driven or defined (although tuning in to those external resources may help). This book can help you understand the drivers of your own happiness. By recognizing and taking ownership for your future and by committing to putting in the effort to achieve job satisfaction, it can be attained. Reading this book will help you through this adventure.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 18, 2024Format: KindleVerified PurchaseDitch Your Inner Critic at Work offers practical, evidence-based strategies to silence self-doubt and thrive in your career. Susan’s approachable writing and insightful exercises empower readers to build confidence and embrace their strengths. A must-read for anyone looking to boost their professional growth and well-being.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 10, 2017Format: KindleVerified PurchaseSusan and I have been life long friends since we were young women in graduate school. Reading her outstanding book, after walking beside her on her own journey, was an even more profound experience than I expected! Her research skills, insights developed from not only her own journey, but those of others, her in-depth study, and her experience as a life coach have provided Susan with the tools that have successfully helped countless others recreate themselves at whatever stage they were on their life paths.
I, too, suffered from the perfectionist inner critic and totally identify with Susan's descriptions and analyses of the ways we sabotage ourselves, not only at work, but in our relationships and other aspects of life. While written in Susan's brilliant style, this is an easy read with exercises that are efficient, yet effective. My hope is that "Ditch Your Inner Critic at Work" becomes standard reading for young professionals, or even college students, so that they can avoid some of the pitfalls we faced and enjoy happier and more satisfying career lives. But, for those of us who have experienced life and want more as we evolve into our remaining chapters, this book is for you! Susan is the real deal. She has provided the perfect holiday gift for the adults on your list!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 2, 2017Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI found Ditch-Your-Inner-Critic-at-Work to be full of great insights and advice for someone in my situation. I had recently separated from my company after eight very productive years and I was having a hard time reconciling how something that started out so positive had taken such a negative turn. What I loved about the book is that the embedded exercises allowed me to work in very specific examples of real events in my working life that I believed to have contributed to the eventual outcome. I could then use the insights gained through the exercises to helped me sort out what I could have done differently, but also what aspects of the event were likely a result of something beyond my control. This allowed me to let go of internalized negativity that was prevented me from moving forward. I feel more confident as I look ahead to my next career opportunity and am sure that I will be referring back to the book when I return to work. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who feels their working life isn’t on the right track or who is between jobs and wants to move forward in a direction that aligns with their goals and aspirations.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 3, 2017Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI have read many career books but this one was different. While it is full of engaging and instructive stories about a wide variety of career challenges and choices, what really took this book to the next level for me were the helpful and (I know this may seem like a contradiction in terms) FUN surveys! Some of the surveys affirmed positive career choices I had made in my career while others highlighted areas I really need to think about. It was like having my own personal career coach available whenever I wanted, able to ask probing and thought-provoking questions and also provide lots of engaging examples and tools for making change. The author clearly loves the topic of positive psychology and is passionate about introducing the findings from this fascinating and relatively new field to help people at all career levels. I have already started recommending it to friends and colleagues!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 31, 2017Format: KindleVerified PurchaseSusan Peppercorn knows her stuff and it is clear that she is committed to helping people who buy the work. Her tremendous experience in career counseling gives her a great grounding to give advice. And you know when you read Susan's book that she has been through and thought through the issues she talks about. This is not written from an academic perspective. Rather, it comes from a practitioner who gives advice in a very down to earth, practical, honest way. This book has been incredibly helpful to me. I've read a lot of career books, but this is one of the best I have read, if not the best.

3.0 out of 5 stars average for senior professionals
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI was expecting more punchy content for senior professionals from someone who is an executive coach. the book is more relevant for people with 5-8 years of experience who want to switch into high gear, senior professionals will find little value in this book.
