Pros and Cons
This bento box seems fairly sturdy and well-made. We have run into a few small frustrations with it but overall appreciate the concept and construction. We did a leak test and found that nothing leaked OUT of the container, which is great! When we checked inside the container we did find that the top tray leaked a bit between the separate compartments. For reference- in the included photo with water in the container, I had only put water in the small middle compartment and the water in the other compartments is what leaked inside the container when I latched the lid on and shook the box around a bit. For that reason, I wouldn't rely on those compartments to securely hold a liquid or sauce that I didn't want touching other food items in that same tray. This box can only be used with both the top and bottom trays stacked together as the lid latches have to go down and latch over both levels. The latches do secure quite firmly and we haven't had any issues with them coming undone unintentionally. There are thin rubber seals on the bottom of the lid and the bottom of the top tray (to seal the bottom tray) that have to line up with the dividers of the tray they fit over. There is nothing on the outside of the box or trays to indicate which direction they have to face so you need to always check that you're putting them on in the correct direction or the rubber seals won't line up with the compartment dividers. The size of the overall box is decent. It provides a larger space in the bottom tray for an entrée with a side slot for the included spoon and fork to stay clean. The top tray has 2 very small compartments and 2 fairly small compartments. For a child these would be perfect for snacks and "sides" but for an adult they might be a bit skimpy. Particularly if you have a physically demanding job, are working out in the elements, or have a varying length of day where you might want a bit heartier of a meal this might not quite hold what you'd want. If you have a set length to your day and are looking for something that provides smaller spaces for portion control this probably fits that need. I've included a couple of photos showing the top and bottom trays side by side and packed with food to give an idea of what can fit in them. Lastly, if you don't have a dishwasher it is a bit of a pain when handwashing to get into all of the square corners well, but with a little extra effort to get those spots the box does come thoroughly clean.
