Percy Jackson's Greek Gods Paperback – Illustrated, February 23, 2016
Purchase options and add-ons
A publisher in New York asked me to write down what I know about the Greek gods, and I was like, Can we do this anonymously? Because I don't need the Olympians mad at me again. But if it helps you to know your Greek gods, and survive an encounter with them if they ever show up in your face, then I guess writing all this down will be my good deed for the week.
So begins Percy Jackson's Greek Gods, in which the son of Poseidon adds his own magic--and sarcastic asides--to the classics. He explains how the world was created, then gives readers his personal take on a who's who of ancients, from Apollo to Zeus. Percy does not hold back. "If you like horror shows, blood baths, lying, stealing, backstabbing, and cannibalism, then read on, because it definitely was a Golden Age for all that."
Dramatic full-color illustrations throughout by Caldecott Honoree John Rocco make this volume--a must for home, library, and classroom shelves--as stunning as it is entertaining.

Editorial Reviews
Review
"Combining the sarcasm and wit of Percy Jackson with the original Greek myths is a great way to hook tweens and teens on the stories without boring them. The beautiful illustrations by John Rocco enhance each story. . ."―VOYA
"Percy’s gift, which is no great secret, is to breathe new life into the gods. Closest attention is paid to the Olympians, but Riordan has a sure touch when it comes to fitting much into a small space―as does Rocco’s artwork, which smokes and writhes on the page as if hit by lightning. . .The inevitable go-to for Percy’s legions of fans who want the stories behind his stories."―Kirkus Reviews

About the authors
I love books. The fact that I get to make books for a living still thrills me everyday. I write and illustrate picture books and novels for children as well as illustrate books for older readers. Many of my books have received prestigious awards including my New York Times Bestselling book, BLACKOUT which received the Caldecott Honor. I am also the illustrator for Rick Riordan's blockbuster series' Percy Jackson and the Olympians, The Kane Chronicles and Heroes of Olympus.
I didn't always make books. Before embarking on full time work as an author/illustrator I worked as an art director in the entertainment business. Movies, television, theme parks and museums were my canvas. It was great work and I enjoyed every minute of it, but...
Did I tell you I love books?
Rick Riordan is the #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series, the Kane Chronicles, and the Heroes of Olympus. He is also the author of the multi-award-winning Tres Navarre mystery series for adults.
For fifteen years, Rick taught English and history at public and private middle schools in the San Francisco Bay Area and in Texas. In 2002, Saint Mary's Hall honored him with the school's first Master Teacher Award.
While teaching full time, Riordan began writing mystery novels for grownups. His Tres Navarre series went on to win the top three national awards in the mystery genre - the Edgar, the Anthony and the Shamus. Riordan turned to children's fiction when he started The Lightning Thief as a bedtime story for his oldest son.
Today over 35 million copies of his Percy Jackson, Kane Chronicles, and Heroes of Olympus books are in print in the United States, and rights have been sold into more than 35 countries. Rick is also the author of The 39 Clues: The Maze of Bones, another #1 New York Times bestseller.
Rick Riordan now writes full-time. He lives in Boston with his wife and two sons.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 9, 2025Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis, is by far, the best book of Greek mythology that I have read. Rick Riordan makes Percy’s tone about all of these people, very kid friendly and humorous. I would DEFINITELY recommend to anybody who loves Greek mythology!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 16, 2024Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis book explains the Olympian Council along with Greek culture and mythology amazingly! It even talks about three gods that are not a part of the Olympian Council, which are Hestia, Hades, and Persephone. It explains the beginning of time, and how the titans took down Ouranos, and how the gods took down Kronos. It explains all of Zeus’ affairs and how each Greek god was born. It also includes certain mortals like Arachne and what happened them. I also like how it had Percy Jackson as the author, because that gave it a hint of humor and how he described his perspective of the Olympians. Thank you for writing this book Rick Riordan!!! 😁😁😁
- Reviewed in the United States on August 23, 2014Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI am not seeing any warnings in the reviews. So, parents, please read this before giving this book to your kids to read! I am a parent of an eight year-old boy who loves everything Percy Jackson, the books and the movies. I am a huge fan of the series as well. I do read the series to my son every night. But, I absolutely will not be reading this to my son at all anytime soon. Below is why.
Yes, I have been reading this novel and I do love it. Yes, it is funny, sarcastic, and witty as others have noted. That is why I gave it 5-star rating.
HOWEVER....The gods are made out to be rapist--big time rapists. Yes, Percy gives nice warnings and all of that. Percy does not excuse the gods behavior. But, it is in this book and there is a lot, in particular with Zeus. So, please, be very aware of this and decide if it is right for your child to read.
I have an avid Greek mythology lover. From what I understand (I am aware I may be wrong but I read this is several different places) that the *original* myths were not that violent and Zeus (and none of the other gods) were painted as rapists. All the sex they did with goddesses and mortals were all consensual. The myths became more violent over time, particularly when the Romans took over, and that was how the gods became big-time rapists. Why Rick Riordan chose to paint the gods this why is beyond me. He has to know that kids will be reading this. I personally will not let my son be reading this until he is at least 13 years old and I can explain it to him in great detail.

Have you ever read the Percy Jackson series by Rick Riordan? If you loved them, this book is for you. This book is stories about the Greek gods as told by a teenage boy named Percy. The funniest thing is he often strays from the story and starts talking about his girlfriend. Another funny thing is the name of the chapters. One is called “Demeter Turns Into Grainzilla.” Another is called “Hephaestus Makes Me a Golden Llama (Not Really, But He Totally Should).” I always love Rick Riordan’s quirky titles.
One story is about Apollo and the golden laurel. Apollo sees Eros and his little bow and Apollo brags about his giant golden bow. Eros gets mad and makes Apollo fall in love with Daphne who was a very beautiful, immortal water nymph. Apollo went down to earth and chased Daphne but she was too fast for him. Apollo almost caught her but she prayed for Gaea’s help. But I won’t tell you what happens next! When I first read this story, I was really surprised about how the laurel was made. I learned so much more than just this one story. The book is filled with interesting facts about the Olympians. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves Percy Jackson or is interested Greek Mythology.
WARNING: This book is enormous! It is 10 inches by 13 inches and more than 300 pages long. I often fell asleep reading it and it would be resting on my chest. My parents were afraid it would crush me!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 31, 2019Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseRick Riordan, the author of the book Percy Jackson’s Greek Gods, already was super successful with the other series, Lightning Thief as well as The Trials of Apollo and many more. Rick Riordan must have felt like there was a need to tell more about the Greek Gods since all of his stories have something to do with myths. I enjoyed this book a lot because it gave me more background information about the gods that I already knew. My favorite part of the book is when the author retells the story of Kronos and how he ruled the World. While he rules, he swallows all his kids. Because Kronos’ children also are god, we know they need to reappear. Eventually, Kronos vomits his children up,after too much to drink. The children of Kronos seem unharmed by the incident. While I was reading this book I have learned that I really like books that are about myths from ancient cultures especially the Greek and Roman myths. Sometimes, when I start reading the RIGHT book I immediately fall into it and cannot stop reading it. This is one of these books!.

5.0 out of 5 stars Una de las mejores compras que he hecho
