About the author

Charles Dickens was born in 1812 near Portsmouth where his father was a clerk in the navy pay office. The family moved to London in 1823, but their fortunes were severely impaired. Dickens was sent to work in a blacking-warehouse when his father was imprisoned for debt. Both experiences deeply affected the future novelist. In 1833 he began contributing stories to newspapers and magazines, and in 1836 started the serial publication of Pickwick Papers. Thereafter, Dickens published his major novels over the course of the next twenty years, from Nicholas Nickleby to Little Dorrit. He also edited the journals Household Words and All the Year Round. Dickens died in June 1870.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 2, 2024Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseWhat a gorgeous little book this is, and at an unbelievably low price. This story goes deep into my soul, and as of today, I've read it four times. After this year, I am making a conscious decision, and declaring that reading this gem is now part of my Christmas tradition. And that's what I love about it, in that it extols all those beautiful emotions in all of us. Upon completing it just today, I had tears of joy--literally--as I turned the last page. My feelings were bursting. I'm so glad I live in a time and place where I can indulge this simple pleasure, in peace.
Of course, what makes this particular edition special is that it's a facsimile of the original print. This includes the original typeface, with it's misaligned typesetting. Then there are the charming illustrations, which sweep you back to that romanticized time in which tradition perhaps held greater value, and the world was filled with beautiful people, living by hope in our better angels. And I enjoy the Christmas season for that very reason, partly nostalgic, partly spiritual. This book accentuates all of that.
Back when The Book-of-the-Month Club was a thing (oh, how I miss that), I bought a hardcover Dickens set, six books in all, that did this same thing with each volume, used the original typeface. I still own that set. One of those books was CHRISTMAS STORIES, all of Dickens' Christmas short stories in one volume. Of course, "A Christmas Carol" was included in it; the first story, actually. And that portion of the book looked identical to this, including those illustrations.
If you're into fine editions of books, editions that celebrate the idea of books themselves, this is an excellent buy. The small size, slightly larger than your flattened hand, gives it a special charm, which makes it, I think, a beautiful Christmas gift. If I hadn't already given a couple of other editions as gifts in previous years, this would be the one I'd be wrapping. What a great story!

- Reviewed in the United States on December 12, 2024Format: HardcoverVerified Purchaseit’s not quite Christmas without this read
My favorite part of the book was really the entirety of when scrooge actually changes his attitude towards everyone and Christmas. It shows his character development and that he actually did keep the promise.
Scrooge's Nephew is probably my favorite character because he was the only character that somewhat had a little faith in him and still loved and cared for his uncle. So much so that he was willing to invite his uncle to his Christmas party. His Point of view choice was very interesting and a lot more fun. He did write in a third-person point of view but how he did it was great. He actually gave his own thoughts a bit.
A big lesson we can learn from this Fantastic book is that even if we made mistakes and sins of our past we still can change a future and maybe make a potentially positive change.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 9, 2024Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseI know that it’s my fault for not reading the dimensions but it never occurred to me that this would be palm sized and not full sized. Just wanted to caution others if that’s an issue for you. Otherwise, nice book.

We were able to get signatures from three of Dickens descendants— his great, great, great grandchildren. They said this is their FAVORITE version of the book! What a beautiful memory. The book is a treasure, including Dickens handwritten notes and features original artwork and more. Dickens wanted his readers to feel like they were receiving a gift. This book is it!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great version of the classic - shame about the delivery.
Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseThe book itself is lovely - well printed and the gilt edged pages and cover give it a really impressive appearance. I’d recommend it to anyone looking for a version of this story.
However, the delivery service really let the Prime service down this time as I watched the tracking app showing the parcel go from Perth to Sydney, to Adelaide, to Melbourne, back to Sydney before finally arriving at my address two weeks after ordering it. Hopefully this is a one-off as normally my Prime orders arrive within a couple of days.
