Tomorrow Will Be Different: Love, Loss, and the Fight for Trans Equality Paperback – March 5, 2019
Purchase options and add-ons
“The energy and vigor Sarah has brought to the fight for equality is ever present in this book.”—Vice President Kamala Harris
“If you’re living your own internal struggle, this book can help you find a way to live authentically, fully, and freely. . . . Let it show that we are all created equal and entitled to be treated with dignity and respect.”—President Joe Biden, from the foreword
Before she became the first transgender person to speak at a national political convention in 2016 at the age of twenty-six, Sarah McBride struggled with the decision to come out—not just to her family but to the students of American University, where she was serving as student body president. She’d known she was a girl from her earliest memories, but it wasn’t until the Facebook post announcing her truth went viral that she realized just how much impact her story could have on the country.
Four years later, McBride was one of the nation’s most prominent transgender activists, walking the halls of the White House, advocating inclusive legislation, and addressing the country in the midst of a heated presidential election. She had also found her first love and future husband, Andy, a trans man and fellow activist, who complemented her in every way . . . until cancer tragically intervened.
Informative, heartbreaking, and profoundly empowering, Tomorrow Will Be Different is McBride’s story of love and loss and a powerful entry point into the LGBTQ community’s battle for equal rights and what it means to be openly transgender. From issues like bathroom access to health care to gender in America, McBride weaves the important political and cultural milestones into a personal journey that will open hearts and change minds.
As McBride urges: “We must never be a country that says there’s only one way to love, only one way to look, and only one way to live.”
The fight for equality and freedom has only just begun.

“In a world where the most vitriolic voices often sound the loudest, McBride's story reveals that most people are not prone to hate.”—The Washington Post
“Whatever the idea of a memoir from a still fresh-faced adult might connote, McBride subverts it: The past few years of her life contain more human experience than many lifetimes. . . . The tumult of these years—the affirming highs and the devastating lows—are chronicled in her vital and powerful new memoir, Tomorrow Will Be Different.”—San Francisco Chronicle
“Sarah McBride is a force to be reckoned with. . . . And now, McBride is detailing her history-making journey in her new memoir, Tomorrow Will Be Different.”—HuffPost

The energy and vigor Sarah has brought to the fight for equality is ever present in this book and she starkly defines what is at stake, and how we can do better to advocate on behalf of all people.”—Vice President Kamala Harris, New York Times bestselling author of The Truths We Hold
“Incredibly powerful.”—Hello Giggles
“Tomorrow Will Be Different is at once a memoir, a roadmap to liberation, and a love letter to anyone feeling the faint flicker of doubt as the fight for equality goes on.”—Ms.
“From the beginning, McBride has been breaking barriers in politics, and in her memoir . . . she steps into the fullness of who she is. Tomorrow Will Be Different is absolutely phenomenal.”—Bitch Media
“One of the most prominent transgender activists of her time, McBride interweaves thoughtful analysis of contemporary political issues, such as bathroom access and trans health care, into her own triumphant journey.”—Washington Blade
“Tomorrow Will Be Different is a life-changing book. With equal measures revolutionary fervor and down-to-earth kindness, Sarah McBride tells the story of coming out as trans and of the terrain, both personal and political, for transgender people and those who love us. Urgent, gentle, and fierce, Sarah McBride makes me believe that the future will not only be different, but glorious—not just for LGBTQ people, but for everyone.”—Jennifer Finney Boylan, New York Times bestselling author of Long Black Veil and She’s Not There: A Life in Two Genders
“Tomorrow Will Be Different is a book about falling in love, being true to yourself, and creating change. Sarah's journey is as relatable as it is inspiring -- a powerful, compelling story, beautifully told by a fearless activist who has only just begun to make her mark on the world.”—Cecile Richards, New York Times bestselling author of Make Trouble and former president of Planned Parenthood

About the Author

My hand hovered over the keypad of my laptop, ready yet reluctant to click “post” on a Facebook note that would change my life forever. I could almost hear the responses I feared would come.
What a freak.
Ew.
This is disgusting.
And probably the most biting, because I was afraid it was true: Well, there goes any life and future for that kid.
Throughout my whole life until this point, it had always seemed that my dreams and my identity were mutually exclusive. My life had been defined by a constant tension between the two: the belief—as certain as the color of the sky—that it was impossible for me to have a family, a career, fulfillment, while also embracing the truth that I am a transgender woman.
For the first twenty-one years of my life, my dreams—the possibility of improving my world and making my family proud—had won out over my identity. But the older I got, the harder it became to rationalize away something that had become clear was the core of who I am. And by college, it had enveloped my whole being. It was present every second of my life.
I no longer had a choice. I couldn’t hide anymore. I couldn’t continue living someone else’s existence. I needed to come out. I needed to tell the world that I was transgender. I needed to live my own life as me.
A little over a year before, I had been elected student body president at American University. AU, nestled between suburban neighbor- hoods in northwest Washington, D.C., is one of the most politically active schools in the country and boasts a rich history of political milestones. It was the site where John F. Kennedy called for “not merely peace in our time, but peace for all time” months after the Cuban Missile Crisis, and the home of the younger Ted Kennedy’s pivotal endorsement of then-senator Barack Obama in the 2008 Democratic primary.
I had always loved politics, advocacy, and government. They had seemed like the best way to improve my community and leave a lasting impact on the world. From the ages of six and seven, after discovering the White House and learning about all of the history that occurred within its walls, I knew that politics would be my life’s calling.
When I served as student body president at AU and began working on the issues I had always cared about—gender equity, racial justice, opportunity regardless of economic background, and, yes, LGBTQ equality—it became clear that making a difference in the world wouldn’t diminish or dilute my own pain and incompleteness.
I had come out to my parents over winter break in the middle of my yearlong term. Since then, I had come out to my closest friends, and as I woke up on the morning of April 30, 2012, my last day as student body president, I was resolved to announce to the world that I was really Sarah McBride.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 4, 2024This book is a beacon in an uncertain world. I needed this positive message of hope and Sarah is an exceptional woman whose certainty in the power of love has convinced me that a future of equity and inclusion is not only possible but is inevitable. Thank you Sarah for all your hard work and inspiration!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 20, 2018I could write 1000 pages on Sarah's book, but I will keep it brief in hopes others will jump at the chance to learn and grow from Sarah's journey. Her story is just so intriguing and powerful. I'll never be able to say enough good things about Sarah and her book. She really draws the reader into her story, her childhood to present, with her heartwarming response to life. She does nothing short of making it feel like she is your best friend and she is sitting with you telling you stories that she wants people to know. One of the most powerful parts would be the ending, when Sarah gets hopeful about the future. Something a lot of us have a hard time doing these days, especially in the LGBTQ+ community. She also rips your heart out with the stories of Andy, but yet they are so warm and loving you can't help but smile and cry at the same time. Sarah's story is just so powerful and magical. She exudes so emotion to an already heartfelt journey. I am glad she could share this story with us all. It not only helped me understand her story, but mine as well. Thank you, Sarah. You have helped so many, and continue to do so. I hope this will give many others the strength the I feel from it.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 2, 2019I met Sarah McBride last year when she spoke on a panel that I held. An advocate for equality she has broken down barriers and made history. Her book, ‘Tomorrow Will Be Different’ is authentic, caring and moving. Sarah drew a picture of what it is to be transgender. I am not transgender but deal with them often as I am the founder and CEO STOMP Out Bullying the country’s leading national nonprofit dedicated to changing the culture for all students. It works to reduce and prevent bullying, cyberbullying, and other digital abuse, educates against homophobia, LGBTQ discrimination, racism and hatred, and deters violence in schools, online and in communities, and promotes civility, inclusion and equality. After reading ‘Tomorrow Will Be Different’ I got a better understanding of what the Transgender community goes through and am more knowledgeable in advocating even more for equality and LGBTQ rights. The book is filled with empathy and completely inspirational. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is transgender or transitioning, or anyone who wants to advocate for equality.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 7, 2025I’m rating the seller and book condition. The book itself is amazing and I wish that everyone would read it.
Was very odd though to get this book and see that it was a library book that was never checked out. It WAS however, in perfect condition. I just hope that it was not taken from the library by someone banning it. Seller was prompt on shopping as well and it arrived on time.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 5, 2018I have always considered myself to be a strong ally of the LGBQT community. After all I have a lesbian daughter and a gay grandson. Both of whom are loved, appreciated, respected, and embraced by our whole (large) family. In the 60s my mother became a mail order minister so she could “marry” my dear friend from college and her partner. I had grown up with and continue to be very close friends with a lesbian and her wife of 25 years; but I had a dark secret: I’ve still struggled to reach understanding, compassion and acceptance of the transgender community- I’ve just never been able to “wrap my head around” the entire concept. I heard about Sarah McBride’s book on a podcast called Nancy, and heard her interviewed and although a memoir from a twenty something year old seemed a bit premature, it seemed like something I should read. So, I did. It was so moving, so thoughtful, and so filled with authenticity, that by the end, and through my tears, I realized that this young woman had provided a picture of what it is to be transgender that changed my world view. I highly recommend this book- it will change you too. I have never written a review before, but felt compelled in this case and I’m glad I did. I hope that others will read this book with an open heart and mind.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 11, 2025Sarah writes a touching and inspiring biography. I needed to know there are trans people like me who will continue to work even in the face of overwhelming prejudice for equality for all.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 5, 2025Didn’t come with beautiful cover. Just a blank book. It was during the caos of holidays - so no longer eligible for return. Do not buy used! I cannot give this a bad review since Rep McBride is amazing
- Reviewed in the United States on April 6, 2018This book is an incredibly hopeful, uplifting, yet tragic story. Sarah McBride is a talented writer who provides much needed insight into what it is like to be transgender, and who has given of herself to be an advocate, for her whole life. She allows her own vulnerability to bring others closer to her and to the LGBTQ community as a whole, and the result is the stunning book. I love her, after reading this book. I will be asking everyone I know to read this book.
Oh, and Sarah McBride restored my faith in politicians and renewed my hope that some politicians are truly working to make the world a better place for all people. Thank you for that, Sarah McBride. I am impressed at all she has done. I think the politicians she has worked with have been made into better people because of her.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tomorrow will be better
I think I'd like Sarah McBride, because she's enormously likeable in this book and in her public appearances as national press secretary of the Human Rights Campaign. A courageous and passionate defender of trans rights since she came out at college, she was the first trans person to speak at a US national party conference and has become a very valuable voice of sanity and decency in an often poisonous climate.
This is a memoir, not a polemic, but of course the personal is political: McBride's personal experiences, and those of her husband Andrew Cray, have informed her advocacy and fuelled her determination to fight for a world where all people are treated with dignity and respect. The book is often really heartbreaking: McBride lost Cray to cancer four days after their wedding day. Yet McBride remains positive and enthusiastic that tomorrow can and will be better.
